Ar Asm

RPII = ln

Asm
Ar is the contributing area evaluated in the presence of agricultural roads and terraces
on hillslopes
Asm is the contributing area in the absence of morphological alterations on hillslopes
The logaritmic form is given to emphasize and map only such areas where an increase
of the drainage area is observed due to road/terraces alteration
The greater is the index and the greater is the alteration due to the antrhopic pressure.
As a consequence, greater is the probability of superficial instability as well.

Farmland abandonment is nowdays a major

problem in many parts of Europe, particularly
in mountain areas and semiarid environments
as the Mediterranean basin.

Abandonment of terraced land can cause land degradation

(excessive soil erosion, gully formation and landsliding, such as
slumping) due to deterioration of terrace walls (Tarolli et al., 2014),
which sometimes collapse due to massive soil movement (Lasanta et
al., 2001)

FINAL REMARKS
(i) Different Earth surface processes leave significant and characteristic signatures
on the surface.
(ii) High-resolution topography is the best approach to investigate local scale
topographic signatures
(iii) Slope & landform curvature are optimal indicators to analyze surface
morphology and the topographic signature of Earth-surface processes
(iv) High-resolution topography helped to develop new morphometric indexes for the
analysis of anthropogenic processes
(v) We are able to recognize surface signatures of human activities (e.g. road
networks, agricultural terraces, ditches, mining)
(vi) We are also able to understand and model the humans related Earth surface
processes changes from their topographic signatures, and this is absolutely the
next challenge in the Earth Science
(vii)New idea for landscape management: road network and urban expansion should
be controlled and managed also as a function of the induced potential erosion
or flood.
