The study of Correlation between Waist Line and the Body Mass Index (BMI) over the
Blood Pressure at Poli Clinic for Internal Disease Camatha sahidya Hospital, Batam 2014.
ABSTRACT

Background of the study .

Obesity has become one of health problem in around of the world, moreover from World health
Organization (WHO) reported that its being worldwide epidemic which needed to be prevented.
The research and epidemiology shows the obesity has significant correlation with all risk fact of
cardiovascular diseases. BMI (Body Mass Index) is almost always used for the measurement.
Thus the criteria of obesity can also be taken from BMI. Waist size is measure the level of
abdominal fat which has strong relationship with BMI. This research aims to know the
correlation between waist line and the body mass index (BMI) over the blood pressure.
Method of the research . The researcher employs observational analysis by using crosssectional research design. The research subject is the women patient at Poli for internal disease
with 21- 49 years old. The data sampling is taken by accidental sampling with 85 people. As the
subject who has full filled the inclusive and exclusive criteria measured by weight, height, waist
size and blood pressure. The data collecting is using chi square test.
The result of the research. The Results of the research shows the cross tabulation make
frequent distribution for LP 80 cm with 46 (54,1%) and LP > 80 cm with 39 (45,9%). The
Body Mass Index which gain the obesity is 21 (24,7%), overweight is 9 (10,6%), normal is 55
(64,7%). The blood pressure with hypertension is 22 (25,9%) and normal is 63 (74,1%). The
statistic analysis result shows LP 80 cm with normal blood pressure is 46 respondent and no
one respondent with LP 80 cm who get hypertension. This LP category > 80 cm with normal
blood pressure is 17 (43,6%), LP > 80 cm with hypertension is 22 (56,4%). BMI with normal
blood pressure is 55 (100%), BMI with overweight blood pressure normal 8 (88,9%), and 1
(11,1%) with hypertension. BMI of obesity is no one has normal blood pressure; in this category
of BMI with obesity in hypertension is 21 (100%). The Chi-square analysis shows the significant

p=0,000 which means p is smaller than ()=5% (0,05). From the result can be conclude that there
is a correlation between waist line with blood pressure.
Conclusion: The result of the research demonstrates that there is a correlation between waist line
and the body mass index (BMI) over the blood pressure.
