Islamic Art

Lesson Plan
Prepared by Ms. Lempola
Grade Level: 5th Grade

Duration of the lesson: 3- Half hour sessions

OVERVIEW & PURPOSE


Through the materials presented in this lesson, students will explore basic elements of
Islamic art, learn about the origin and specific styles of Islamic art and create their own
printmaking piece inspired by islamic art.

NATIONAL ART STATE STANDARDS


V.A. 7.2.5a- identify cultural meaning suggested by images in Eastern Art
V.A. Cr1.2.5a - experiment and develop skills in Eastern art-making techniques
V.A. Cr2.2.5a- demonstrate safe procedures for using art tools, equipment, and
studio Space

OBJECTIVES
1. Students will create a 9 x 9 black inked Islamic-inspired print over a simple
watercolor background.
2. Students will understand the essence of Islamic art.
3. Students will demonstrate their understanding of printmaking techniques by
properly inking their plate, printing it correctly, and repeating the print to make
patterns.
4. Students will use creativity skills in deciding what colors will be in the background
and the design made of 5 different lines.
5. Students will consider the elements of shape, color, and line.
6. Students will consider the principles of repetition and movement.

1. Foam Plate
2. Pencil
3. Ink
4. Roller
5. Paper
6. Watercolors

PROCEDURE
Introduction/ Motivation: The presentation
Instructional Strategies:

Day 1:
-Presentation

-Students write about different Islamic Designs, they write to compare /


contrast
-Designs (Drawn on pieces of paper, folded, and copied on the other side.
-trace onto foam plate

Day 2 / Day 3:
-

Students ink and print their pieces taking turns inking then printing at their
tables

Any spare time

ACCOMMODATIONS / MODIFICATIONS
Extension and Enrichment:

For gifted and talented students, I will encourage them to take their time in really
considering each step of the process and how they can master the skill by practicing and
working hard.
Additional supports:

For students on an IEP or 504 I will help them by checking in more often and
demonstrating for them 1:1 any ideas or concepts they are struggling with.
