WHEN I WAS A WEE LAD, HAVING

JUST EARNED my blue belt in karate in
Santa Fe, New Mexico, my estranged
father tried to curry favor with me by
scoring tickets to Aaron Banks Oriental
World of Self Defense at Madison
Square Garden in New York City on June
8, 1975. It was featured on ABCs Wide
World of Sports, the origin of the famous
tag-line, The thrill of victory and the
agony of defeat.
That day changed my life.
Not because my dad and I got any
closer (he has been and always will be a
nobody to me I know, I know, put away
your hankies) but because it was a
magnificent showcase of different
martial arts styles. There was a lot of
agony of defeat that day, I can tell you.
The big draw to the show was
plastered all over the poster (I still have
an original framed on my wall): KARATE
vs. KUNG FU! JUDO vs. WRESTLING!
KICK BOXING vs. BOXING (Full
Contact)!
The Oriental World of Self Defense was a big
Wow! Representatives from different
deal
in the 70s.
styles were going to beat on each other
so we can finally put to rest the eternal question: Which Style Is Better?
Needless to say, I cant remember which guy won and the debate over martial
arts superiority still rages on to this day. But we all know the answer to the
question, right? It aint the style, its the stylist.
Like all those hokey Chop Socky kung fu films of the 70s, where the one guy
claims his Hidden Snake style is superior to the other guys Iron Claw style
and then they jump from rooftop to rooftop battling it out in baggy pants and
buttoned up jackets.
I love that stuff! I wanna do that!
Or which rifle is going to win the Sharpshooter event? Is it the blah blah
blah or the yadda yadda yadda? Wait, whats that? Its the shooter, not the gun?
Oh. Just like in martial arts, I suppose.
Better to attack or defend? (Miyamoto Musashi has a few things to say on
that subject look it up, Google Boy.) Better to punch or to kick? Better to hit or
grapple? Or, better yet, the question should be: Who are the better Strikers and
who are the better Grapplers? Hey, whaddayaknow, we address that in this very
issue! How lucky are you?
And we should all give a special thanks to Mr. Aaron Banks, who passed
away in May of 2013 at the ripe old age of 85, for helping us answer the eternal
question Whos a better fighter? My guy or your guy? Duh. Obviously my
guy.

RING GIRL

OFFICIAL
MISS KNOCKOUT

Lets dance.

MICHELLE McCOY
LEAVES YOU BREATHLESS
Michelle McCoy from Oklahoma City lives in
Las Vegas, performing beneath the big lights. She
is under contract with the MGM Grand as a boxing ring girl and won their title of Miss Knockout.
Pretty obvious, right? Dont think we needed to
go to the judges scorecard for that one.
As a competitive Ballroom dancer, Michelle has
won several city, state and regional titles, along
with prize money. Also a full-time model, she
dances weekly in the Beatle Show Live at Planet
Hollywood.
In Ballroom competition, we Tango and do the
Foxtrot. I also do Rhythm style, which is Salsa and
Cha Cha, Michelle McCoy says.
Cha cha cha indeed.
Michelles ideal man is tall, dark and handsome.
Somebody who can make me laugh, but intelligent. Super go-getter. I like my men to look like
men. I dont like skinny guys at all. But not ripped
guys either, I feel like theyre way more into their
looks than I am.
She claims her favorite thing about Vegas is the
variety, all the access to live music, going to
movies, even bowling. And her least favorite thing
about Vegas is that the people are more abrasive
and aggressive than her hometown of Oklahoma
City, nicknamed The Big Friendly.
Michelle cant name a specific MMA fighter she
follows, but she does enjoy watching The Ultimate
Fighter on TV.
And most importantly, whats this beautys favorite ice cream flavor?
Chocolate-dipped waffle cone pieces with
caramel, marshmallow and fudge. Its an orgasm in
your mouth. And you can quote me on that.
Hey! Lookee therewe did!

Coming off a difficult loss to Joseph Benavidez, Darren Uyenoyama took

time to reflect and came to the conclusion he wasnt having any fun. He took
the Benavidez fight with only six weeks notice. He claims he got a little off
track by coaching his sons wrestling team and dealing with family stuff. So
he has gone back to fighting in the cage for the love of it.
In surfing, its called the Endless Summerwith MMA its the Endless
Season. Getting back to enjoying it. Less stressful, he says.
Always a grappler, Uyenoyama wants to test his grappling skills against
the best in the world someday. In the meantime, hes been ramping up for
his next fightthis December, Uyenoyama squares off against UFC flyweight
John Moraga.
Its a good match-up. Were polar opposite in our strengths. Im working
my striking defense and my submission offense to prepare for him.
Hopefully his next UFC match will be more fun.

VIDEO GAME BRAWLS

Batman Heel Kicks You in the Head

By Kerry Michael Li
Producer Eric Holmes from WB Games Montreal, known for his previous work on the game Prototype, talks about the combat mechanics in
the latest Dark Knight beat em up, Batman: Arkham Origins.
Ultimate MMA: Where do you get your inspiration for the fighting in
BAO?
Eric Holmes: Really, the inspiration comes from the previous games
and all the incredible work done by Rocksteady. Batmans fighting style
is very well established and he was 100% confidentour Batman is a little bit younger, less experienced, he doesnt really know his limits yet.
Hes higher energy, more aggressive. But his enemies, like Bane and
Deathstroke are now incredibly powerful. He has to deal with a whole
new level.

MMA: Do you actually film a guy doing the moves and put that in the
game?
Holmes: For things to look real, which for me is very important for
Batman, we start with motion capture, even with the hand held weapons,
because we want that level of skill. Then we artistically touch up the key
frames of the moves to exaggerate or accentuate the parts we want to
have an impact.

WB GAMES

MMA: Do you guys watch MMA fighters when making the game?
Holmes: Theres definitely that component in the game, from the fight
animations to the cut-scenes. There are so many people involved, MMA
is in there for sure.

The Dark Knight is back and hes whoopin some major ass.

MMA: The Batman games are known for fighting groups of thugs. Any advice?
Holmes: You want to build up a rhythm and chain together combos. And the
bad guys will try to stop you. Over time, you develop a sixth sense of when these
things are going to happen, you see them setting up to take a shot at you. So its
really important to prepare for that. You can anticipate it and continue with your
combination or switch to a different target. The key is to up your combos, thats
when you do the most damage.

New Vision
Batman: Arkham Origins features an expanded Gotham City and
introduces an original prequel storyline. Taking place before the rise of
Gotham Citys most dangerous villains and assassins, the game
showcases a young, raw, unrefined Batman as he faces a defining
moment in his early career as a crime fighter that sets his path to
becoming the Dark Knight.

ASK THE HOT CHICK...MMA RELATIONSHIPS

Dear Hot Chick,
I like to work out in MMA a lot, but my girlfriend is losing interest in her workouts all together and starting to get fat. What
do I do?
Tim in Cleveland

VINCE CAVATAIO VIA GETTY IMAGES

Dear Tim,
If you cant love her for her, then dump her.
I know it sounds harsh, but its true for two major reasons:
First and foremost, our most valuable asset is our time.
There is a short window in which we must get married (or not)
and have children. Most doctors agree that women should
have children before the age of thirty-five. (Believe me, it sucks
for us, too.)
If youre with your girlfriend and all you can think is, Man,
shes getting fat, then break it off. Number one complaint from
all my girlfriends is: If he knew I wasnt the one, then why the
hell did he waste my time?!
So do her a favor and cut her loose. Let her go find someone who will appreciate her as she is.
The second reason is it sounds like your interests are diverging. To sustain a long and healthy relationship, you should
share common interests and goals, otherwise you will grow
apart, which sounds like its already happening. Isnt that how
every cheating heart finds its match?
So have the guts to take a long, hard look at your current relationship and make yourself available for the right girl who will
love you as much as she loves MMA.
Good Luck, Fat Hater...

THE DANGER FACTOR

Krause wants to
make his presence
known in the UFCs
lightweight division.

3 Scary Things About

James Krause
By Matt Quiggins

What is the Danger Factor?

To some, its the element of surprise. To others, its the ability to take an
opponent down at will. Its not just a talent but the true sign of heart and
determination in a fighter.
James Krause feels he has the danger factor in the UFCs lightweight
division and he is ready to shine and make his presence known.

MMA: You started fighting in the WEC then Bellator?

KRAUSE: I went to the WEC and I just wasnt ready for it yet. I hadnt
matured as a fighter and to be honest, as a man. I took on Toby Imada
in Bellator. A lot of people dont know that I cut 33 pounds with 5 days
notice, I was physically a mess and I couldnt have beat up a 3 year old
child if I wanted to. I should have been in the hospital. It was my
stupidity and my immaturity that did that.
MMA: It worked out pretty well. Youre 20-4 as of now.
KRAUSE: I love doing MMA and Im passionate about it and I dont call
it work. Its something that I love doing. I wake up every morning and you
dont have to tell me to go to practice. I love going there. All my friends are
there and Im very passionate about it so its not work to
me. People talk about Octagon Jitters and I never had that. I just felt like I
belonged there and I felt like I was where I needed to be. I dont want to
be a middle of the pack guy. I want to be a contender.

IAN SPANIER/ZUFFA LLC

ULTIMATE MMA: How long have you been an MMA fighter?

JAMES KRAUSE: I got started about 7-8 years ago. It started as a
summer thing and I didnt expect it to really go anywhere. I took my first
fight about 2 weeks after I started training, which looking back, was pretty
stupid of me. I won. I was never really great at any other sport. I was
always a scrawny little skinny guy, so I really enjoyed the weight classes in
MMA.

ULTIMATE MMA: What do you look

for in an MMA man?
NICOLE: I dont know what it is about
a guy that can walk in a cage and take
a punch in the face, but its kind of
sexy. The passion I see in most fighters while training, preparing, and entering a fight is amazing. I want a guy who
can fight with his mind not just his
muscles!

Jon Jones is great nowbut

how would he fare against
the fighter of 2033?

On September 21st in a remote

and exotic land known as Toronto, Jon
Jones had to do everything in his power
to stop a giant awkward Swedish man
from stealing his status as the greatest
fighter of all time. What a joke.
Dont get me wrong, Im not doubting
that Jon Jones is arguably the greatest
fighter that is currently involved in mixed
martial arts and Im not doubting his
reign as the light heavyweight
champion, which includes some
amazing wins over some really tough
opponents.
What I am doubting is his status as
the greatest of all time, a term that gets
thrown around in MMA like the
Kindergarten Student of The Month in
a class of nine. So if not JBJ, who do I
think is the greatest fighter of all time?
Is it the Spider? Is it Fedor?
No. The greatest fighter of all time
isnt even born yet. Actually, he doesnt
even exist.
We as a society tend to believe that
our time is the most important time in
the existence of time. If the zombie
apocalypse is going to happen, surely
its going to happen to us, because we
have reached the height of human
existenceand damn it, we deserve
endless hordes of undead. As the
greatest generation ever, that should be

our problem, not some weaker
generation that doesnt understand the
complexities of bludgeoning a zombie
with a boat oar.
The same sentiment carries into
MMA. We automatically assume were
seeing the greatest ever each and every
time a new champion steps into the
cage and dominates, but Anderson
Silva getting dropped and Jon Jones
being taken to the brink are reminders
that this sport is nowhere near as
evolved as we think.
Mixed martial arts is still a punk ass
kid. Yeah, its in its early twenties, but as
anyone who has lived through their early
twenties will tell you, you dont know
sh** about the world at that time in your
life. The same is true of MMA. Just like
the NFL or the NBA, fighters 20 years
from now will look back at our current
crop of GOATS and laugh. Sure, the
accomplishments made will still be
impressive, just as we are still in awe of
former football greats who dominated

through past decades, but those guys

wouldnt make the practice squad in the
NFL now. MMA is no different.
There will always be the debates over
who is the greatest of all time, but if you
actually think you have an answer then
youre lying to yourself. There is no
answer. There are no GOATs. There are
great fighters in given weight classes at
given times, but that guys only as great
as the era he fought in, and his
grandsons GOAT would mop the floor
with him if they were to somehow meet
in their primes. Its the nature of
everything, and MMA is not the
exception.
We may never see another fighter like
Jon Jones. Then again, every fighter on
the undercard of UFC 600 might fight
like Jon Jones, or even better. So save
the Greatest Of All Time talk for a
sport thats dead, because as MMA
continues to evolve, the sacred cows of
today are going to make for cheap
hamburgers tomorrow.

WORK HARD
WITH JOHNY
HENDRICKS

A WEEK IN THE LIFE OF AN ALL-AMERICAN PRO FIGHTER

FIGHT DIARY
BY AILEEN NATALIA
JOHNY HENDRICKS IS A 30-YEAR-OLD, 170-POUND WELTERWEIGHT who was training for
one of the biggest fights in his career against George St-Pierre in November. It was the first
time he faced St-Pierre in the Octagon. In his words, this is how his training camp went:

SUNDAY
9:00 A.M.: I go to church in Midlothian, Texas. I try to deal with what the preacher is
saying. I dont think about anything else except whats being said at that time. Youre always
thinking about this, thinking about that, always working. At church, Im just relaxing and
listening to what the preacher has to say and thats it. I like to always be moving forward,
but its also nice to let somebody else be in charge.
10:30 A.M.: I spend my day with my wife and 3 daughtersage 4, 2 and 4 months, doing
what they want to do. Sometimes yard work or errands like picking up supplies for our dogs:
a yellow Lab and a chocolate Lab. I also make sure to socialize. My neighbor might come
over with his son and Lab, too. Our dogs will play together while he helps me fix my fence.

DUSK: We barbecue deer venison, chicken with some

asparagus, quinoa and avocadoes. After dinner, we go inside and
watch the football game. When the kids get tired, my neighbor
will go and my wife and I will bathe kids, put them to bed. Then I
usually do one of two things: play videogames like Black Ops
or watch the Military Channel. Ultimate Warfare is my favorite
show because they go back and re-enact what the soldiers went
through.
I love the military, grateful for everything they do. I like to know
what they were thinking, what they were talking about or feeling
when theyre engaged in war. They dont know whats going to
happen once they leave the compound, everything can go wrong
in an instance. Thats the way its inside the cage. I dont know
whats going to happen and theres always the possibility that
something could go wrong in a split second. Like MMA, its a
mixture of training and personality to be a good fighter. They train
the military so well that the average person can do it. But then
theres also the exceptional ones, like the Green Berets, Rangers
or Navy Seals, who go above and beyond. And that has to be
their personality that drives them to be the best, to push
themselves beyond the average person.
2:00-3:00 A.M.: Bedtime. Usually I pass out on the couch, my
wife comes and gets me.

MONDAY
9:30-10:00 A.M.: Get up. First thing I do is weigh myself and
then run for 4 miles. If its warm enough, I run around my
neighborhood that has some really steep hills. I run about 4 MPH
for 30 minutes because I know if I run too quickly my body will
break down and Ill be trashed the next day. So I give myself
plenty of time, usually eight weeks before a big fight to train.
During the first week, Ill run 4 MPH for 30 minutes. Then I listen
to my body and when Im ready Ill up it to 5 MPH for thirty
minutes. Then Ill up it to 6 MPH for ten minutes and then drop
down to 5 MPH for the remaining twenty, until Im running 6
MPH for thirty minutes, which is basically 4 miles in thirty
minutes. It just depends on the day.
If you put a guideline on everything, you could injury yourself.

IM ALWAYS TRYING TO
FIND THE BALANCE SO
YOU ALWAYS NEED
TO BE ABLE TO ADAPT
ON THE FLY.
For example, if you tell yourself that I gotta run on the treadmill at
7 MPH but your body is tired and beat down, you might pull
something because youre trying to push yourself too much.
There are these guys who say they give 110% every day, but you
physically cant do that because your body will shut down.
Im doing about fifteen workouts a week not counting my run, I
tell myself Okay, Im going to push myself as hard as I can for
five of those workouts. Im going to go as hard as my body will
allow. Then I do five of them at eighty percent and then Ill do the
other five at like sixty or seventy percent.
For example, Ill go hard in my jiu-jitsu workout in the morning
but the next day Ill take it easy in jiu-jitsu and then work hard in
the afternoon on my strikes. I learned this in college. When I was
nineteen and wrestling, I was going hard all the time, so I was
beat down all the time. Then I realized you need to work hard but
you also need to work smart. Im always trying to find the balance
so you always need to be able to adapt on the fly.
11:00 A.M.: Breakfast. Oatmeal with blueberries, strawberries
and a touch of honey.
11:30 A.M.: It takes me 30 minutes to drive to my workout in
my pickup truck. I like driving because Ill just turn on the radio
and listen to music like Erik Church and Waylon Jennings on
Pandora. Its very peaceful and relaxing. I like to listen to country
because they dont say any bad words and I never have to worry
about my kids hearing something bad. The music I was raised on
like CCR and Bob Seger, which is hard seventies rock but its
sort of the same thing because they had a storyline.

MMA_1401_31 11/4/13 11:14 PM Page 31

I LOVE THE MILITARY I LIKE TO KNOW WHAT THEY WERE THINKING,

WHAT THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT OR FEELING WHEN THEYRE
ENGAGED IN WAR.
I love Country music because its not too loud and the singing
is not too over the top but also because its about how good our
country was, which is why I listen to older country music.
Nowadays, I see our country falling to pieces and everything I do
is to keep my kids involved in the America I grew up in and love.
NOON: I go to practice. Velocity Gym in Pantego. Ill do circuit
training: 15 different workouts. 30 seconds on each one with a
one minute break. Ill repeat rounds for 4 more rounds. I try to
mimic what my next fight can be or will be. For example, St-Pierre
is a wrestler, I know he is going to try and take me down, so I
might be throwing punches and then my boxing coach will say
sprawl, so I gotta sprawl while throwing punches. I train based
on what I expect the fight to be so my circuits wont always be
the same. Then I take a shower and snack on grapes, apples
and peanuts.
2:00 P.M.: I get in my truck and drive home. Ill relax a
little bit. My wife and kids get home around

7:00 P.M: I drive back to the

gym, listening to my country
western music.
7:30 P.M.: I arrive at Velocity gym.
8:30 P.M.: I train in group
sessions, either sparring,
kickboxing or boxing class. We
rotate I might be hitting the
bags or the mitts for about an
hour. After group session, Ill
keep moving, keep the sweat
going, then Ill cool down a bit,
hang out and then shower.
10:30 P.M.: I drive back home.
5 days of intense
training a week
in camp.

SATURDAY

Go to bed at 3 a.m.
Wake up, run for an hour.
Drive half hour to gym.
Circuit Train: Five rounds of 15 different exercises,
30 seconds each.
Drive home.
Eat lunch at 6 p.m.
Drive back to gym.
Train in class or with trainer for 90 minutes.
Drive home.
Eat dinner at 11 p.m.
Watch Military Channel about warfare.
Go to bed at 3 a.m.
Repeat.

TAMMY BALLARD

COULD YOU DO IT?

2:00-3:00 A.M.: Bed. My schedule is pushed a few hours later

because I fight late. I usually fight around 9:00 or 10:00 PM in
Vegas, which is around 11:00 PM my time. Your body gets used
to training at a certain time and if you try to change
it, you get tired. So whatever time I do my fight at,
thats when I like to do my camp, because after
the fight, theres still press conferences and
talking to the fans so I like to sound
intelligent and coherent.

My schedule is basically the same TuesdayFriday. The only variable is that the circuit will
change. On Tuesday, I might do jiujitsu. On Wednesday, I practice
strikes with my coach. On
Thursday, Ill do another style
of circuit like kettle bell,
which is my hardest circuit.
On Friday I run, but I dont do
anything else in the morning
because I want to spar at 9:00
p.m. at nightIll have two guys
ready for me and Ill try to get
five to seven rounds in a cage,
which is the same size I fight in.
Then I push myself until I cant push myself
no more. My coach will be there and well do
five-minute rounds. Then my coach will tell me
what Im doing right or wrong and well mimic it like
a fight. Well even do scenarios, like you hurt your
right hand or left hand or your foot or you pulled
something, how do you work though these. By now its
around 10:30 p.m. Same routine. I cool down, take a
shower, go home, watch TV or play videogames and then
go to sleep.

5:30-6:00 P.M.: Ill eat lunch,

which is usually chicken or
venison.

32 | ULTIMATE MMA | www.ultimatemmamag.com

11:30 P.M.: After I eat, I either watch military channel or play

videogames.

TUESDAY-FRIDAY

3:00 P.M.: Ill play with the kids and dogs.

11:00 P.M.: I get home, the

kids are in bed and Ill make
myself dinner. Ill cook some

chicken or venison in a pan and then throw in some spinach.

Then I make my quinoa on the side. I usually make enough for
two bowls, so I always make 2 meals at a time.

8:30 A.M.: Run for 1 hour.

10:00 A.M.: Ill watch my daughters soccer game.
11:30 A.M.: Then well go out to eat a healthy meal.
12:15 P.M.: We might go to Lowes or hang with
friends or go home and play outside.
NIGHT: Ill still go to bed as late. I dont give that day
any special treatmentI always go to bed late during
camp, because my body has to be ready for Fight
Night.

Dangerous.
Thats the best word to describe submission artist Frank Mir.
When Mir goes for a submission, he threatens not only to defeat you,
but tear your limbs and possibly end your career. His speed on the
ground is like a lightweight BJJ player and this skill has allowed him to
become a two-time UFC heavyweight champion. Mir has two wins over
Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and has also defeated Cheick Kongo, Mirko

FAMOUS FOR
The greatest fighter in Hughes cap is his submission win over GSP, but he also has an impressive victory over Royce Gracie, although he
downplayed it afterward. This win is particularly
special because Hughes was able to mount
Royce, put him in an armlock that most would
have tapped out to, take his back and then
pound him out for a TKO win. It was rather
shocking to see how advanced Hughes ground
game had advanced in MMA and it really shined
brightly that evening in May of 2006 at UFC 60.

MMA BACKGROUND
NCAA Division 1 wrestler

FUN FACT
Hughes first fight was a 15 second win via
slam.

Before GSP, Matt Hughes was the most dominant fighter

in the welterweight division.
In the first half of the last decade, Hughes was a bulldozer who
was dominating the 170-pound weight class. Hughes has some
tremendous ground and pound, but then transitioned to adding a lot
more submissions to his game and tapped out Georges St-Pierre with an
armbar; Frank Trigg twice via rear-naked choke and Joe Riggs via kimura.

REVIEW
By Marlon Ransom

New Sekai
Gi Review
For the competitor,
this gi is IBJJF
approved and light
enough to wear for
weigh-ins.

It is available in three
colors: white, blue and
black.

This gi is a winner
across the board.

THE ONLY WAY I

CAN DESCRIBE THE
WAY THIS GI FITS IS
TO SAY THAT IT FEELS
LIKE IT WAS
TAILOR-MADE TO FIT
MY BODY.

The newest Sekai gi

gets a big thumbs up.

I ordered the A4, since I am

six feet, two inches and now 220
pounds. Most gis fit too big, too small or
are just plain to stiff and uncomfortable.
The only way I can describe the way this
gi fits is to say that it feels like it was
tailor-made to fit my bodyfrom the
sleeve length and the shoulder to waist
and back taper.
(Just so you know, I wash my gis in
cold water and hang dry before I wear
them. This one was no different and I have worn it twice a week for a solid month.)
GI TOP/JACKET
I know this has nothing to do with wearing the gi, but my eyes were instantly drawn to
the elaborate print on the inner panel of the top, which is aptly titled World of Brazilian
Jiu Jitsu. The worldwide map highlights some of the most popular places for BJJ. This is
a talking point for sure.
There is no patch down the front. The SEKAI logos followed by Japanese characters
are reserved for both shoulders and the Fuji logo and lettering are on the top middle of
the back.
The placement of their logos and size are spot on without being overstated. The gi is
lightweight and even after being drenched with sweat it still felt light and non- restrictive.
A final note: there are several rows of sticking and the top has held up to a lot of grips
and pulls from sparring without the least bit of potential tearing.
GI PANTS
The pants have three rows of sticking and are rip stop with a bungee cord drawstring.
They are lightweight like the top and the fit was near perfect. One thing I have to
mention is I do have to retie the drawstring after most rolls, but it held up well when
doing drills. The SEKAI logo and Japanese character are on the bottom right side of the
leg. Looks cool.

TIPS
By Tinguinha

Do you know the five

things you need to do
before you compete?

BEFORE YOU STEP

INTO A TOURNAMENT
YOU NEED TO KNOW
WHAT ARE THE STRONG
PARTS OF YOUR GAME
AND WHAT ARE THE
WEAKER PARTS OF
YOUR GAME.
MAURICIO TINGUINHA MARIANO

Website:
www.bjjoc.com
New Revolutionary Training
SystemLet the Revolution Begin
at: www.tbjj.tv

With more than 25 years of experience

and competing in BJJ, Ive had the chance to
fight in youth and adults divisions from white
to black belt. I am fortunate to have the experience and have received medals in all major
BJJ tournaments: State, Nationals and the
Pan American World championships.
To be successful in tournaments is a combination of a lot of thingsbut here are five
things you must do if you plan to compete in
a BJJ tournament:
KNOW THE TOURNAMENT RULES
Knowing the tournaments rules is the
number one thing. BJJ tournaments have
fight time limits and if there is no submission,
the fight will be decided by the points and
advantages system. BJJ tournaments nowadays are a gamelike it or not. To fight in a
BJJ tournament you have to have a full understanding of the rules.
YOUVE GOT TO HAVE CONDITIONING
One thing you are going to find in common
with all medalists in tournaments is that they
are all in good shape. If you get tired in a
tournament match and your opponent does
not, the fight is over for you. Fighting in
tournaments requires strength. It is important
that you have fighting conditioning and that
will require conditioning training specifically
designed for BJJ fighting.
COMPETITION TRAINING
Training at your school and fighting at a

tournament are very different. To get ready for

fighting, you need to train at the same pace
as you do in a competition. You have to try to
create the same environment as your fight.
Start training from the feet with the same
time limit and points system. This will help
your game and prepare your mind for the
tournament.
UNDERSTAND YOUR OWN GAME
Before you step into a tournament you
need to know what are the strong parts of
your game and what are the weaker parts of
your game. Then work with your instructor
and your sparring partners to fix those weaknesses and reinforce the stronger parts of
your game to get even better and that will
help you dominate your opponents.
Remember what the Greek philosopher
Socrates said: Know thyself.
GAME PLANNING
It is important to get to the tournament
with a game plan. Know what you are looking
to do in the fightif you want to be on top or
the bottom, if you want to be more aggressive
or counter, etc. You need to get there
knowing what you want and knowing how to
do it and execute whatever the plan is.
Whoever is better prepared and ready will
have a better chance to win the fight.
Good luck!

POWERING THROUGH
THE NEGATIVITY
TITO ORTIZ VOWS TO FIGHT THROUGH LIFE'S,
MMA'S CHALLENGES
Story and Photos by Breanna Armstrong

Tito Ortiz balances many roles: fighter, father,

businessman, actor, fight manager and coach. Dedication
and his never-ending urge to get the most out of life make
it all possible.
Ortiz runs the Punishment empire and is known for
raising the pay scale for fighters. He is a single father and
his name has been the topic of conversation since he first
stepped into the Octagon at UFC 13, 15 years ago.
After signing a new contract with Bellator and parting
ways with his former girlfriend Jenna Jameson, Tito claims
that the past few months of his life have been a fresh start
for him and his family.
EARLY YEARS
Things did not come easy for Ortiz, one of the highest-grossing
fighters in the industry and former UFC light-heavyweight
champion.
It was the punk rock era. I grew up way too quick. I had four
older brothers. I was a bad kid. I would go to punk parties, slam
dancing. I started drinking at a very young age. About 7 years
old, we moved to Santa Ana [and stayed there] until I was 13.

I saw things that I probably shouldnt have

seen. I lived in motels, lived in cars, lived
in garages, lived on peoples couches,
Ortiz explains.
I look back on it and I would never take
any of those things back because I know
what it feels like to be hungry, I know what
it feels like to starve, I know what it feels
like to be freezing and not have anybody
there to love you. Its crazyI was the kid
who was always dying for that attention,
he says.
When Tito was 13, his mom left his dad
because Titos father failed to clean up his
act. They moved to Huntington Beach and
the Bad Boy antics followed him to the
surf community where he hung out with
the wrong kids and caused trouble.
Tito started wrestling as a freshman in
high school and got the attention that he
was dying for.
I was able to slam someone on their
head and not get in trouble for it. It was
kind of cool. I just built from there. Won
the league, won CIF, placed sixth in the
state, Ortiz explains.
My mom made sure there was a roof
over my head, lunch money for school and
clothes on my back. I learned the facts of
life from watching the facts of life. I
learned a lot from a lot of peoples
mistakes and my own mistakes. Every
summer it seemed like I was going to
juvenile hall, he says.
After graduating high school, he started
working at a moving service. A beaten
down, 180-pound Tito ran into a coach
one night at a club. He recommended that
Tito show up to practice on Monday
morning and check out financial
aid to get him back in school. The next
day, Tito had a revelation.
I looked in the mirror and I didnt
recognize myself. I was sucked-up,
pimples all over my face. It scared
the sh** out of me.
So Tito quit his job and went to Golden
West College. And thats how my life
changed. I took a huge chance and I really
just didnt want to become my parents, he
says.
UFC CAREER

Abbotts corner while watching UFC on

Tito took a chance to pursue his

dreams, and now has an empire to

DANA WHITE and

TITO ORTIZS Onand-Off Relationship
UMMA: Your relationship
with Dana seems on and off
again, has it always been off
and we just didnt know it?
Tito Ortiz: I think over the
last four years, it really has
been off and hes just kind of
been fake about it. I try to
apologize for the things Ive
done. My emotions get the
best of me sometimes, Im an
emotional guy.

I think a lots behind me now and Ive

got to be the bigger
man and walk away,
and Im going to be
that person now. He
says Im irrelevant,
but he talks about me,
which is cool. One of
their greatest champions, how can you be
irrelevant? One of
their biggest moneymakers, how can you
be irrelevant?
I talk about what
the fighters get paid
and he doesnt want
any other fighters to
listen to me. When he
says Im irrelevant, I
think its going to
make people pay attention to me a little
more because Im
speaking the truth.
And when you speak
the truth, he doesnt
want that to be
known. Hes said that
to me before too, hes
like Dont let people
know what you make.
I think its greed.
Greed has taken over.
Fans dont understand it because they
see the overall view of
what the UFC paints
on me. And they believe everything they
say instead of believing the things that I
say. And thats whats
crazy. I dont get it, I
dont understand it.
Are the fans there to
watch Dana White? Or
are the fans there to
watch his fighters?

television. Tito started training with Tank for about

six or seven months before requesting his turn in
the Octagon. To his surprise, Tank called Tito and
told him that he would be fighting as an alternate
at UFC 13.
At the time, I was on scholarship, so thats why
I had to fight for free. I fought Wes Albritton. I
stopped him in 22 seconds. Talk about fear; I was
so afraid looking in the cage, and I was like what
did you get yourself into? My competitive instinct
took over and all the sudden I was fighting Guy
Mezger in the finals, says the now-seasoned Ortiz.
The harder I worked, the better I got. And that
kid who was dying for attention got that attention
through the UFC, and I thrived off it. And a yearand-a-half later, I became a world champion.
Tito became the UFC light-heavyweight
champion in 2000 and went on to defend the title
five times.
SECOND CHANCE AT LIFE
Because of the adversity that he faced growing
up, Titos main priority is to protect his children
from the life he lived.
I think a lot of things from my childhood make
me how I am as a parent. I dont want to be absent
as my parents were with me. My father was never
there. I want to make sure that Im the best father
and parent that I can possibly be. My childhood
was so hectic and so crazy. You know, my exthat
was one of the reasons why I walked away, he
explains.
That decision has led to a positive outcome:
My house is peaceful now. My kids love on each
other and share with each other, they dont fight
with each other anymore. I feel like my kids can
now have a second chance at life because
everythings so positive in the home, Ortiz says.
At 38, he feels like hes lived four lives. I got
lost in a relationship that was so polluted that I lost
myself and now its like everythings brighter. I
think trying to be a savior to somebodyI cant do
that. I need to save myself before I save someone
else. The only ones who made me realize it were
my children, Ortiz says. The biggest thing a
parent needs to learn is dont be selfish. Its not
about yourself any moreits about the ones you
brought into this world, because they never asked
to be brought into this world.
LEGACY IN THE MAKING
Ortiz signed a four-fight contract with Bellator
Fighting Championships, who also wanted to
invest in his future to feed his craving for
competition.
I thought this last year I was going to walk
away, but my last fight, when I came up with a
loss, left a bad taste in my mouth and I want to try
it again, he says.
Ortiz was set to fight his old training partner
Rampage Jackson at Bellators first PPV on Nov.

Pre-Fight Nerves
Yes, Even Tito Ortiz Still Gets Nervous
TITO ORTIZ: I think its still the same
pre-fight feeling. I get nervous. I cry
and throw up before all my fights. But I
think its just a real side of it. We are
both out there trying top knock each
others heads off. Were trying to hurt
each other. I am trying to entertain,
yes, but Im trying to hurt the person in
front of me. And hes trying to hurt me.
May the strongest man live.

2, however two weeks before the fight, Tito had to

pull out due to a neck injury.
Fighting gets harder as I get older, of course.
My training gets harder, my body isnt what it was
when I was 22 years old. My mind stays strong,
yes, but my body is fragile sometimes, Ive got to
watch myself. I know my fight career is almost
over, my body can only take so much more
damage, he says.
Tito is now living in the house of his dreams and
has saved up for his three sons to be able to pick
the college of their choice someday.
No matter who tries to stop me or who tries to
ruin me, I was born for greatness. I think I had
three choices for my life: dead, in prison, or where
I am right now. Things will come; I just got to work
hard to make it happen, Ortiz explains.
Maybe there is a God looking over me and
telling me to stay true to myself. Maybe Im here to
be an inspiration. Maybe Im here to show people
that you can come from the dirt and raise yourself
in the sky as high as anyone could ever dream.
And thats why I worked hard to make it happen. I
want to know that when Im gone, Im remembered
as a legend.
Legends live forever. I watch people like
Muhammad Ali and what he did for boxing, I watch
Hulk Hogan and what he did for professional
wrestling and I think Ive walked in a couple of
steps like those guys did in my sport of mixed
martial arts. And Ive always dreamed to try to do
that, he says.
Ortiz overcomes being in the constant line of
fire and is confident that his career is one that will
leave a powerful impact:
Theres been guys who try to cut me down
and try to tell me that Im irrelevant to the sport
and you cant take my legacy away. Tito Ortiz will
always be here. He will always be apart of mixed
martial arts forever, no matter what.

RETIREMENT OR NOT?
UMMA: What led you to the decision of coming out of retirement?
TITO ORTIZ: I think the relationship I was in poisoned me mentally, physically and when I got out of the relationship I realized how fun it was to train
again, how fun it was to be around my friends. And the fight I fought against
Forrest, I watched about 30 times, with audio on and audio off and I thought I
won the fight all 30 times I watched it. For the first time in UFC history they
put strikes attempted. I never knew you could score on strikes attempted and
it left a really bad taste in my mouth. I wanted to compete again. I wanted to
come back. I feel young, I feel I got it, I feel like I can do it.

Excuses. I found every
excuse I could to avoid taking
responsibility for my health. I would
blame it on my thyroid problem, that
I 100 percent made up. I have even
blamed it on my metabolism,
convincing myself that mine was the
only metabolism is the world that was
nonexistent. I would blame it on my
transition as a college athlete and
how I went from two-a-days to
shipping magazines, watching my
nephews, Netflix, writing, photo
shoots, family time, girl time, and
never missing an episode of Sons of
Anarchy. Clearly I was too busy, way
busier than anyone I knew. So I had a
pass right? A good HANDFUL of
excuses, right?
Well guess what? Blood test results came back, and I am as healthy
as ever, the self-diagnosis of my thyBreanna Armstrong
roid problem was now out the window. I took a metabolic intake test
and again, I was stunned to see that I actually had a high
metabolism, so that was out. On top of it all, I found out that
I was actually in good shape. Good shape is a step above
fair and two steps up from poor. I was running out of excuses.
If you know me, (and over the next year of this magazine
and our online blog, you will get to know me) youd know
that I am the type of person who goes out of my way to help
other people. If I know that I am going to spend time on
something with the end result only benefiting me, I will put it
on the back burner.
So this fall, I took a stand. I put me on the front burner. Im
ready to be an athlete again. If I am going to get my life back
on track, I want my readers to participate with me.
I thought, for as much time as I spend with athletes, why
dont I try the techniques that I write about? Whats holding
me back to not only get to where I was, but to be better than
my best? I was out to find a trainer that would be able to

take on this project with us (yes,

you). I had the readers in mind first
and foremost, and secondly, myself.
But who? Im going to be honest, I
had talked to a few well-known trainers in the MMA industry and I was
grateful for their time, but I just did
not find a fit.
The answer was a short trip away
at Reign Training Center, where the
top MMA fighters train like Mark
Munoz, Chael Sonnen and Jake
Ellenberger, to name a few. There I
met Riley Ross. In one conversation
he believed in me, he believed in you,
the reader and he saw the big picture
and the victory at the end. I was still
at the starting line. I believe I asked
him to train us within 10 minutes of
meeting him.
And so the journey begins.

Athletes who participate in MMA come

in various genders, sizes and ages. In general,
speed of movement, stability, strength and
balance are crucial elements to be
considered. At Olympic or professional levels
of competition, most athletes will be physically
and chronologically mature.
For these athletes, sparring and practice
competitions take up the majority of their time
and effort. Practice or training sessions are
usually focused on combat techniques. These
athletes are highly motivated, have high
tolerance for exercise stress and will usually
be eager to try novel approaches to their
training.
STEP 1: Consider the Athlete
John is a 25-year-old MMA athlete who has
been fighting for two years. He is 6-foot-4 and
220 pounds and was a collegiate football
player who turned to MMA after college. He is
physically well developed and has multiple
years of weight training experience. He has
been focusing on improving his wrestling and
boxing skills during the majority of his practice
sessions. He is now looking for a program
that will help him become more ballistic in his
kicking techniques.
STEP 2: Assess and Test the Athlete
John has a history of knee injuries to his
right knee. He states that the knee is fine now
and is fully rehabbed from two prior surgeries,
the last one performed 2 years ago. He states
that he has been bench pressing 315 pounds
and squatting 385 pounds for sets of 3. He
prefers to do his weight training at his dojo
along with the specialty exercises he performs
for his sport (ropes, kettlebells and so on).
The one test used to assess the strength
and function of the surgically intervened knee
is a single-leg squat performed in front of a
squat rack so that John can grab a supporting
stanchion if he needs to balance or support
himself.
The test is performed on a box that is 3
inches high. The box is placed in front of the
squat rack. John stands with one heel placed
at the back edge of the box. The toe of the
other foot is on the back side of the box so
that it can slide vertically down and up. From
this position, John performs a single-leg squat,
down to full flexion and back up to standing.
He is asked to repeat this for 6 repetitions.
John was observed from the front and the
side as he performed the squats. For his
surgical leg, it was noted that his knee

74 | ULTIMATE MMA | www.ultimatemmamag.com

collapsed to the inside (medially) when he

descended to the squat position, and the
knee demonstrated a wobble on the ascent.
Both observations are indications of
weakness in the quadriceps and hamstrings.
This area will demand attention before John
undertakes a high-intensity, high-volume
plyometric training program.
After assessments of Johns range of
motion and flexibility, he is deemed to be
normal and fit in all areas other than his
surgical knee, where functional strength
seems to be the questionable factor.
STEP 3: Consider the Time Frame or Cycle
John lives out of the area and is willing to
devote only a single day each week to
plyometric training. He can drive to the facility
to spend 2 hours training once a week.
STEP 4: Select the Time in the Training Year
John allows himself 2 weeks to recover
before any serious competitions or matches.
He is willing to do the plyometric training at
any time during the year other than his
recovery periods before his matches. It is
decided that plyometric training for John will
be conducted on Tuesday afternoons.
STEP 5: Design the Program
This workout is designed to be performed
once a week over a 2-hour period. Maximum
recovery should be allowed between sets of
exercises. This program is intended for the
mature, well-developed and experienced
athlete. A strength base is an imperative part
of attempting to benefit from this type of
training.
Before beginning this program, an athlete
should be able to squat at least 1.5 times his
body weight and be able to successfully
perform 10 plyometric clap push-ups.
Consideration must also be given to the fact
that a specific weakness has been identified
in the athletes physical makeup.
More detail on all of these steps can be
found in Plyometrics, written by Donald
Chu, who pioneered research-supported
plyometric training in the Western
hemisphere and is revered throughout the
strength and conditioning community for
enhancing modern sports most defining
athletic factor: power. Plyometrics is now
available in bookstores everywhere, as well
as online at www.HumanKinetics.com.

LEVEL: Moderate.
EQUIPMENT: None.
START: Spread the feet far apart, front to back, and bend the front leg 90 degrees at
the hip and 90 degrees at the knee (figure 9.10a).
ACTION: Jump up, using the arms to help lift, and hold the split-squat position (figure

Cook To Win

Good Nutrition Is In Your Corner

In this day and age, with the intense
training that MMA and other extreme sports
require, it is of the utmost importance for an
athlete (or the athletes nutritionist) to ensure
they are incorporating the right types of foods
and herbs into their daily nutritional routine.
We tend to forget that before modern medicine, we relied on the natural healing properties
of certain herbs and spices to help cope with
insomnia, joint inflammation and low energy levels.
One of the herbs I use most when cooking
meals for my clients during their fight camps is
fresh basil. There are a few reasons why I love
to use basil in my cooking, the first being because of its strong flavor and aroma, which add
a distinct and unique flavor to every dishfrom
raw salads to pasta sauces.
The second reason I like using fresh basil is
due to its anti-inflammatory effects on the body,
making it great for recovery meals. This is especially important for fighters because of the constant strain and pressure they are putting on
their joints from doing things like fighting out of
armbars or posting an arm out when getting
slammed in a takedown.
There is an enzyme in the body called cyclooxygenase, which causes inflammation.
Basil contains eugenol, which is a healing component that blocks this enzyme in our bodies,
thereby helping reduce inflammation.
The last reason I use fresh basil is because it
promotes cardiovascular health. MMA fighters
endure a rigorous training schedule when
preparing for a fight and this intense training requires their heart to function at an elevated rate
for long periods of time, making it very important to consume herbs like basil, which is high
in magnesium. Magnesium helps muscles and
blood vessels to be more relaxed, improving
blood flow and ultimately cardiovascular health.
Here is a small salad that I make quite often:

BASIL, APPLE &

CABBAGE SALAD:
1 apple (Chopped into small pieces)
6 fresh basil leaves (Finely chopped)
2 cups cabbage (Thinly sliced)
1 tblsp balsamic vinegar
1 tblsp extra virgin olive oil
Chop and mix all ingredients in a bowl.

Full Body Blasting

The Ultimate Time-Saver Conditioning

#1 The One Arm Kettle Bell squat.

T R A I N I N G

Hey coach! Is there a way to be more efficient

with my training time?
Its funny you should ask. Well not funny for you.
Let us introduce you to the ultimate in full-body blasting. This will
have your heart rate up in no time, as well as getting a full-body
workout.
There wont be a muscle you have not exercised during this
circuit. Your warm-up is built right into your workout. Its an effective
way to get a lot work done in a short period of time.
Heres the deal: We are going to choose 10 exercises in a
circuit. The first time through will be your warm-up, your rep goal
will be 20 to 30 reps at a controlled pace.
You will be learning the movement. You will take a one-minute
break between your next round, which will be 75 percent effort. At
this point your rep goal is a minimum of 30 to 40 repsin a sense,
picking up the pace, but not at a breakneck speed.
This will teach you to pace yourself and not blow your wad early.
On your last trip, its balls to the walls100 percent effort! No
slacking.
We generally use a timer for this round and let people go all out
for the 10 stations. The program is not for the faint of heart (but
dont faint afterward, either).
Okayhere we go with the program The Master Blaster:

#2 Air Fit or TRX row.

Round 1 50 percent effort for 20-30 reps:

One arm kettle bell squats.
Air fit or TRX rows.
Bosu sprawls to pop ups.

TRAINING
By Kevin Joyce

Quick and Dirty!

Tabata Training with Heavy Ropes

KEVIN JOYCE

Round 1: Up and down.

Round 2: Make a v.

The Tabata Regimen has become a favorite protocol

of fighters who compete in environments similar to the one
created in H.I.I.T. training (High Intensity Intermittent
Training). Created by Professor Izumi Tabata, based on his
findings while training the Japanese Olympic speed skating
team, his goal was to develop a protocol for athletes that
would build muscle and improve aerobic capacity.
In theory, it seems simple enough: 20 seconds of
intense work, followed by 10 seconds of rest, repeated
eight times consecutively, for a total of four minutes. In
practice, it is one of the toughest workouts around. The key
to the workout is all-out effort. Its like sprintingif it wasnt
hard, you werent trying your hardest.
I have selected four different methods of rope
undulation, which target four different muscle groups: an
up-and-down movement of the arms to target shoulders
and biceps; a down-and-in motion (like a letter v) to hit
the chest; a side-to-side movement to work the abs; and an
alternating up-and-down undulation with lunges added in
to get the legs and really challenge the lungs.
Kevin Joyce is a physical therapist and private fitness trainer in San
Diego, CA, and is the founder of CalRopes Fitness.

Round 3: Make the ropes

into snakes.

THE WORKOUT
To start, set your interval timer for 8 rounds of 20 seconds
on and 10 seconds off.
If this is your first Tabata workout, I recommend you work
through the four undulations in the first four rounds and repeat them in the last four rounds as follows:
Round 1:

Both arms moving up-and-down

Round 2:

Arms move down-and-in to make the rope

look like a letter v

Round 3:

Both arms move together side-to-side as if to

make the ropes look like two snakes

Round 4:

Alternate moving each arm up-and-down, and

also alternate lunging down to each knee

KEVIN JOYCE

Round 5-8: Repeat the previous four rounds

KEVIN JOYCE

Round 4: Alternate up
and down.

78 | ULTIMATE MMA | www.ultimatemmamag.com

For fit athletes looking to really push the envelope,

I recommend:
Set your timer as above, but in all eight rounds, perform
the same undulation (i.e. both arms moving up and down).
Then take a three-minute break and perform another eight
rounds with the next undulation (i.e. arms moving down-andin).
Continue on until you have done an 8-round Tabata
interval with each of the four undulations.
This will take 25 minutes (four 4-minute rounds, plus three
3-minute breaks) and will leave any athlete gasping for air
and maybe running toward the trash can!
CLOCK ME: Heavy Workout ropes and the Gymboss hand-held
interval timer can be purchased at www.CalRopes.com or
smart phone users can download the Seconds interval timer

the Terminator!

Move like a machine! Hit like

the Terminator!
If you really want to be
STRONG in fighting (or really, any
sport), youve got to have a powerful and flexible core. Without it,
you might be successful in MMAbut only as a fan.
Believe it or not, power comes from flexibility. If you just lift weights or
do strength training just to get muscle size, you will not only see good
power but will also suffer injuries.
I will show you a killer core exercise here, but this requires a lot of
flexibility. You must stretch well before doing this. In addition, try to make
time to stretch a few times a day. A combination of this exercise and
regular stretching will enhance your power dramatically.
HOW TO DO HYPEREXTENSIONS:
Keep your legs straight all the time. Keep the tension instead of
relaxing and putting stress on your joints.
If you cannot put your hands behind your head, you can leave them on
your chest. The point is to use your core (not other body parts) to swing
up and down.
Breathe in first and slowly go down all the way until your back is
almost perpendicular to the floor.
Without losing the tension at the bottom, bring your body up as you
breathe out. That way, you can contract your abs even more, making this
exercise more effective.

At the top, squeeze your abs. Never lose the tension at any point. If
you do, you are resting your muscles and instantly the effectiveness will
be reduced to half.
Your neck should be straight all the time. Do not tuck in your chin.
Slowly go down and come out without bouncing back. Utilize total
control.
SETS AND REPS:
Do three sets of 20 reps to start with. If it is easy, increase the reps to
30 reps in each set. Rest only one minute between sets. You should be
reaching failure in each set around the 20th or 30th rep. If you can go
on, try to hold a plate behind your head so you will have more resistance
to make each rep harder.
Remember to do this consistently. In the beginning, your lower back
may bother you, but soon the pain will go away as you get stronger.
Make sure you stretch every day! If you are stiff, this exercise will be very
hard to do, preventing you from doing it with a full range of motion.
Without cheating, do it with a correct form and make sure you feel it
where you are supposed to: your core! I wouldnt say this will necessarily
get you a sexy six packbut it will certainly give you deep, powerful and
flexible abs!

The recently held ONEFC: Champions and Warriors event

tapped the largest potential market in Southeast Asiahungry
Indonesian fighters.
For the local fans, however, this event holds more significance
beyond a live international MMA event on home soil and having
their countrymen in the winning columnit is an important step in
revitalizing MMA in Indonesia and bringing the industry beyond
its peak from the early 2000s.
With no local MMA promoters in Indonesia since then,
prospects face an uphill battle in developing their fight career,
resorting to intra-gym events to try to build their resume, which at
times is futile given the poor record-keeping by the organizers.
Outside Indonesia, fighters will have an even harder time as
event organizers face a challenging task of promoting little-known
Indonesian fighters with little or no track record in a foreign
country despite the fighters credentials in other combat sports
outside MMA.
Then along came ONEFC, boldly being the first (and so far the
only) international organization with shows in Indonesia,
jumpstarting local MMA as fighters with fewer fight records can
have the home crowd support to begin with and helping the
promoters to sell tickets. This was apparent in last Septembers

Presented with such opportunity, we have seen a surge of
Indonesian martial artists coming from different backgrounds

The growth in the number of Indonesian MMA fighters in the
past two years is nothing short of staggeringfrom two fighters
under contract by MMA promotions in 2011 to 13 within the
course of three years. More importantly, eight of who are in the
early stages of their MMA career with no more than three
professional MMA fights under their belt. That is impressive
considering that it is close to impossible to find a fight outside
Indonesia.
To top it off, ONEFCs effort to promote their events has
increased the awareness of MMA to the general public,
particularly the local MMA scene. Along with increased exposure,
we have seen more martial art gyms trying to capitalize on this,
with new gyms springing up and existing gyms stepping up their
game by recruiting former national champions as part of their
team of trainers. Some even go as far as hiring trainers from
overseas, like Thailand and Brazil.
Other than new gyms, the increasing interest in MMA was
clearly seen during ONEFCs Champions & Warriors event,
where they managed to fill Istora Senayans full 15,000-people
capacitya venue almost 4 times larger than BritAma Arena. This
has shown how much the interest in MMA has grown in
Indonesia between February 2012, where ONEFC had their first
outing, and September 2013.
Despite the exponential growth in interest of MMA between
the two events, Indonesia still lacks the amateur league with

Once again, ONEFC may provide a solution to this problem

STEVE CARL
Prior to becoming the first-ever World Series of Fighting
welterweight champion on October 26 with an impressive
submission victory over Josh Burkman, Steve Carl was quite
possibly the best fighter you had never heard of. Coming
into his championship bout, Carl was riding a 6-fight win
streak, seeing all of those matches end with a submission
in the very first frame.
After the fight, Carl admitted that two weeks prior, he
was in the emergency room with torn muscles and a
bulging disc in his back. He was determined not to be
pulled off the card and spent his final two weeks of training
camp resting and rehabbing, which paid dividends in his
title-victory.
In eight years in the sport, hes built an incredible 21-3
record, while mostly flying under the radar. Its par for the
course for Carl, a humble 28-year-old Iowan who began his
MMA career while enlisted in the Army. It was during that
time that he was encouraged by his fellow comrades to
enroll in the Army Combatives program and thus his
professional career was born.

made for his third win with the World Series of Fighting

Gaethje also boasts a 12-second win over Drew Fickett in
a 2012 Rage in the Cage contest and is undefeated through
the first nine fights of his career. A Grudge Training Center
fighter, the 24-year-old Gaethje has earned nine of his ten
career wins by stoppage, including eight by knockout.

Moraes was a two-time national muay Thai champion in

However, hes now training alongside former UFC

The latest Gracie Hunter?

New Breed of Gracie Hunter

Rich Patishnock Rises in WSOF
By Eric Kowal
Richard Patishnock did what many men cannothe made a
member of the famed fighting Gracie family verbally submit when he
defeated Igor Gracie at WSOF 2 in March. Gracie did not tap due
to strikes or submission howeverrather, he chose not to come out
from his corner for the start of the second round.
NO HARD FEELINGS
I was a 9-1 underdog in that fight, Patishnock said of his fight
which aired on NBC Sports Network. I knew why they [WSOF]
brought me in. On paper I was supposed to lose. It was supposed to
give him [Gracie] a win, boost his career.
Instead, the opposite happened. After several minutes of
defending off his back, Patishnock slammed Gracie not once, not
twice, not three, but four times, causing enough damage to Gracies
shoulder that doctors suggested he not continue.
I have no interest in fighting Gracies. Its not like Im out there
calling out Gracies. I had a fight and I did what I was supposed to
do. It didnt go in their favor, so they wanted revenge.
GRACIE GRUDGE
Patishnocks new four-fight WSOF deal came with one
stipulation: his next bout was to be against another Gracie as the
family sought out to right their ship.
At 170 pounds, Patishnock faced Gregor Gracie in what the
WSOF was building up to be a grudge matchexcept the two
fighters did not see it that way, saying they had no beef with one
another. On September 15, Patishnock would again claim victory by
defeating Gregor via unanimous decision.
84 | ULTIMATE MMA | www.ultimatemmamag.com

It feels great, not only because I beat two members of a

legendary family I grew up watching but it was a huge personal
accomplishment because a lot of people doubted me being with a
company like WSOF, Patishnock said.
PREPARING TO TAKE ON A GRACIE
The hardest part preparing for the Igor fight was getting past the
name Gracie. Ill admit I was a little nervous but then I reminded
myself he bleeds like I bleed. Ive been in this sport for a long time,
so it was just another fight, just a bigger opportunity for me,
Patishnock said.
And then, The hardest part getting ready for the Gregor fight was
getting my hair right and living with my decision of wearing the pink
underwear at weigh-ins [laughs]. No, Im kidding, it was just staying
humble coming off the other fight, not getting over zealous and reverting
from my game plan, knowing he was going into the fight for revenge.
NEW ERA OF GRACIE HUNTER
Iconic Japanese fighting sensation Kazushi Sakuraba received the
nickname Gracie Hunter after defeating Gracie family MMA
pioneers Royler, Royce, Renzo and Ryan Gracie more than 10 years
ago. Just as Sakuraba defeated Royce and Renzo back-to-back,
Patishnock delivered the same outcome for Igor and Gregor.
A lot of people have been calling me Gracie Hunter, including
other fighters from that night... I honestly dont want to be known for
that. I respect Renzo and what the family has done in the sport and
by nature Im not a disrespectful guy. BesidesI dont want to fight
every member of the Gracie family for the rest of my life.

Release the Beast

Rising Star Miles Marshall: Scariest Fighter Ever
by Victory Jay
I have been in this game a long time and I have
seen more fighters come and go than most will see in
a lifetime. During my travels I have come across some
sinister charactersbut none have left an impact on
me like newcomer Miles Marshall. In his most recent
bout with UFC veteran Chad Reiner, Marshall stepped
into the cage with only two professional bouts under
his belt.

A display of
dominance.

AGAINST THE ODDS

The criticism quickly crossed the Internet: What
commission in their right mind would allow a 1-1
fighter to match up against a UFC veteran?
My answer would be: Any regulating body that had
seen Marshall fight before.
Undefeated as an amateur, holding a victory over
the likes of current UFC middleweight Brian Houston,
Miles Marshall is a monster. Not only is he physically
intimidating, with a physique that appears to be the
cloned offspring of Wanderlei Silva and a video game
villain, but he is a technical powerhouse on his feet as
well as the ground.
When this match was announced, I wasnt worried
for the 1-1 fighterI was worried for the UFC vet!
BEAST MODE
Marshall entered the cage as the serious underdog
against a very game opponent. On paper this wasnt
even a fair fight. However, this was his opportunity to
show the world what he could offer and he did it in a
matter of seconds.
Reiner came in fast with a flying knee and Miles let
loose a barrage of blows that took the action to the
ground. From there, Marshall secured Reiners back
and made some quick sub transitions before rolling
into full mount and blasting his opponents
consciousness into tomorrow.
In just twenty five seconds it was over.
In the five minutes it took for Marshall to literally
come down from beast mode, Reiner took that same
amount of time to be revived a very scary five
minutes that felt like twenty for us in the crowd.
FEAR FACTOR
It has been a long time since I have witnessed a
display of dominance like this. It is reminiscent of the
old NHB days where a salty veteran pro would open up
a tomato-can amateur opponent in an unfair assbeating, only this time the tables were turned (no
disrespect to Chad Reiner, he is one of the best in the
world). This just shows how scary Miles Marshall
really is.

10 BURNING QUESTIONS
By Kerry Michael Li

ED MULHULLAND / GETTY IMAGES

OBVIOUSLY,
WHEN YOU COME OFF
A LOSS, YOU CAN TAKE
IT A COUPLE OF WAYS.
DARREN ELKINS ON GOING
FROM A LOSS TO A WIN.

Does soaking in ice make you cold blooded?

DARREN ELKINS ICE MAN?

With So Many Battles Hinging On the Judges Decision,
Do You Need Nerves of Steel?
Darren Elkins, age 29, is a
5 foot 10 inch, 145 pound
featherweight, with an 18-3 record.
Fighting out of Hobart but resides in
Portage Indiana, he has only lost one
fight out of his last seven. Is this guy made
of ice? A cold blooded predator? Lets
see if our scalding hot 10 Burning
Questions can melt his heart a bit. And if
not, does it really matter?
ULTIMATE MMA: You came off loss to
Mendes to a win over Hioki what do you
attribute that to?
DARREN ELKINS: Obviously, when
you come off a loss, you can take it a
couple of ways. I wanted another win. So I
worked on better combos and defense in
between the two matches.
UMMA: Youve won at least 7 fights by
unanimous decision. Is it nerve-wracking
waiting for judges to make a decision, or
did you know you had it?
ELKINS: Even if you had a dominant
fight, you never know which way its
gonna go. Yeah, its nerve-wracking.
Seriously, it could go either way no matter
how well you did. But I was pretty
confident.
UMMA: If you could have any musical
group in the world (past or present) play
at your birthday party, who would it be?
ELKINS: I guess REO Speedwagon. I
listened a lot to them growing up, my
parents played them a lot around the
house. I like that old classic rock.
UMMA: When youre in training camp,
what do you hate doing the most?
ELKINS: Ice baths! They help with
recovery but I dread it. I sit there for 15
minutes, the first 5 minutes are the worst,
then it feels good. You gotta get in fast
get it over with!
UMMA: You fought in a Corral Combat
in 2008. How does it differ from the
cage? Do the horses get in the way?
ELKINS: The horse is always a problem.

You do not want to get kicked by a horse.

UMMA: If you could choose the way you
were going to die (not suicide) what
would it be?
ELKINS: Uhm I would have to say go
out in my sleep. Quiet. Easy. No fuss.
UMMA: Whats it like being the middle
child of 3 brothers?
ELKINS: Its hard to be in the middle.
My younger brother is six years younger
than me and my older brother is two
years older, so I took most of the abuse
from him. I took it easier on my younger
brother because of those experiences. I
helped him a lot more.
UMMA: Have you ever been in a real
Brawl on Bourbon Street?
ELKINS: No I definitely have not been in
a real brawl on Bourbon street, but I think
it would be a big crowd of people. You
gotta watch out.
UMMA: If you could go anywhere in
time, what would you do?
ELKINS: Go to the time of the first
moon landing. That would be cool to see
that when it happened. Im a big outdoor,
nature guy and its amazing we did that. It
would be interesting to know what
everybody was thinking when that
happened.

HOOSIER
PRIDE
Darren Elkins is proud to
be a Hoosier from Indiana.
When asked if thats true
and to quickly tell us what
the state bird of Indiana is,
Darren hesitated and didnt
know. Its the cardinal, by
the way. Darren said he
knew that.
Which led to a discussion
about why are there even
state birds in the first
place? Why not state
dogs? Darren thought it
would be more practical to
have state dogs running
around while the cardinals
flew around. Makes more
sense.
Youre Welcome.

UMMA: What is your first memory of a

martial arts experience?
ELKINS: I would have to say wrestling
at four years old. At that age, you had to
be six to wrestle in a tournament, but I
went with my uncle and they asked him if
I was six and he said, Yeah, sure, hes
six. So I went in and got to beat up on
kids much bigger and older than me.
Made me a better fighter!
Kerry Michael Li could barely walk and talk
without pooping his pants when he was four
years old, let alone compete in a wrestling
tournament. Not much has changed since
then.
