Park Society (VRPS) Annual Conference in November
2016.
Out of 101 applications submitted in 14 categories,
Stauntons submissions won in two categories:

last March around St. Patricks Day in Montgomery
Hall Park. More than 14 teams participated in this
300-year-old Irish tradition.

people with disabilities.
We are honored and grateful to have received these
awards. Special thanks to the Staunton Engineering
Department for their work on the Lake Tams project.
We would also like to thank the Staunton community

BEFORE/AFTER-SCHOOL CARE
& SUMMER CAMP
Camp Staunton: The Imaginarium

An imaginarium refers to a place devoted to cultivating the imagination.

June 5 July 28
What do parents value about our program:
The activities, teachers, safe environment.
The kids are always active.
The variety of activities and the ability to play and be a kid in the summer.
I know many staff, they are wonderful. Friendliness of staff.
What children think of our camp:
Camp Staunton Rocks!
I love the field trips.
Lots of time to play.
Being outside all day is cool.
We take great care in the hiring process by only interviewing qualified and mature staff. The majority of our
employees have been with Staunton Parks and Recreation for over 10 years. Our Park Setting makes us unique from
some of our counterparts who use institutional settings. We have acres of green space, state-of-the-art playgrounds,
woods to hike, outdoor sport courts and fishing lakes. We value creativity and have researched the many ways play in
the outdoors enhances creativity in children. The Enrichment and activities we provide are exceptional.
Choices and Interests: Your child will chose from many activities like creative writing, flag football, hiking, disc golf
and cooking. We take Field Trips to various fun and exciting places, such as Boxerwood Gardens and Museums. Does
your child need Exercise? Whether it is organized or unorganized play, there is no way around it. We play numerous
recreational activities each day. Age Matters! Its all about the age and appropriate activities for each age group
which includes field trips. We separate our three camps according to age. The Staunton Parks and Recreation summer
camp program has been in operation for over 30 years. Our reputation precedes us, just ask any
previous parent or camper about our summer playground program. Register for the entire
8 week program, or pre-register for certain weeks. Program Fees: $620 pre-paid for
8 weeks, OR $90 weekly. Registration begins Monday, February 1 at 8am at the
Irene Givens Administration Building in Montgomery Hall Park.

Natalie, how do we #RecYourLife?

Our child attends HEART and we enjoy the program because it

provides a safe and fun environment for Lorelei before and after
school while I work. She has attended for three years and during
this time the staffing has remained the same. We look forward to
their friendly smiles and kind manners year after year. They help
with her homework, give her more play time outdoors, and kindly
remind the kids to use their manners and increase their interpersonal
skills. The HEART program provides me peace of mind that my little
one is being well cared for while I am at work. Natalie Baker

HEART: Healthy Environmental Afterschool Recreation Time

The HEART afterschool program is a latchkey program that provides a home away from home to
children of working parents. Concerns about safety and being home alone or under-supervised is a
good reason to enroll your child in this program. We have little staff turnover from year to year giving
us confidence that your childs caregiver is both qualified and trustworthy. We have known each
member of our child care staff for at least five years and they have extensive training and experience.
They understand that parents want their children to be kept safe and feel acceptance and belonging.
Most of our staff are parents and grandparents themselves, which can be very reassuring given staff
maturity is the common denominator when establishing security and trust in a caregiver relationship. The
HEART program has quite a tradition with its roots beginning 30 years ago with the first pilot program
at McSwain Elementary School. We have since branched out to each elementary school in Staunton and
have developed a credible and professional reputation. This year we are continuing with our enrichment
to enhance what is already provided by the Staunton City Schools bookmobile activities, contracted
creation artist Sandra Carter and our favorite animated storytellers Brenda and Martha from
the Staunton Public Library. Registration for Fall 2017 will begin on June 1. Afternoon
HEART is $126 per month. Morning HEART is $27 per month, both together are
$140 per month. For any questions regarding the HEART program, please
contact Claire Richardson at richardsonca@ci.staunton.va.us
or 540.332.3945.

JR, how do we #RecYourLife?

The HEART program has been great for our family. We were
concerned about Jackson being at school from 7:30 in the morning
until after 5 in the evening, but now according to Jackson, we cant
be late for HEART in the mornings and cannot leave before the
activities are over in the evening. The HEART Program has been
a stress free solution for us. We worried on how we would get
Jackson to school and who would watch him until we got off from
work. The HEART Program solved both of those for us!

HEALTH AND FITNESS

Adult Aikido

Aikido is the gentle martial art of harmonious movement.

Learn to redirect aggression through circular movements
designed to destabilize an attacker or restrict an
attackers movements in a way that protects the
defender as well as the aggressor. Increase mental and
physical flexibility through a series of partner exercises
designed more than 80 years ago by Morihei Ueshiba,
the founder of Aikido. His students brought the art to
America and passed it on to many students in Aikido
dojo (martial arts studios). Aikido will increase range
of motion in the joints, improve hand eye coordination,
and increase wellbeing through breathing exercises.

how to avoid those when you are shopping. Misleading
product labeling will also be covered and handouts

Rene, how do we #RecYourLife?

I play disc golf because combines several of my favorite

things: being in the woods and throwing something as far as
possible! Watching a well thrown shot travel exactly as intended
is quite satisfying. We are very lucky for the Kiwanis support
and generosity. Without their help and the dedication of Will
Grant, the course would not have been possible. We are very
fortunate to have a local course of this quality. Before I started
playing, I had rarely gone to Montgomery Hall Park. It really is a
beautiful part of Staunton. The course winds through some of the
less traveled areas which most people dont see unless they are
walking the trails or biking. I absolutely love those quiet parts of
the course. Montgomery Hall is now one of my favorite places in
Staunton. It has a bit of everything. Rene DeVito

Gypsy Hill Walking Club

This club is cosponsored by Denos Subway

on North Augusta Street
Did you know that one lap around Gypsy
Hill Park equals 1.3 miles and takes around
30 minutes to complete? The American
Heart Association recommends that adults
get 150 minutes or more of moderateintensity physical activity each week. That means five laps
per week around Gypsy Hill Park will help you meet that
recommendation. As a walking club member your miles are
recorded weekly and can be viewed online at the Gypsy Hill
Walking Club webpage located on the Staunton City website.
For 2017 our sponsor, Subway on North Augusta Street,
has provided us with weekly $10 gift cards to help us stay
energized and eat fresh! Club members who reach the weekly
lap goal are entered into the drawing for that weeks $10
gift card. All ages welcome. #5811 Price: $10 annual club
membership (includes walking club shirt). Club currently meets
Friday mornings at 9am in Gypsy Hill Park at the bandstand.
No obligation to come Friday mornings. Recorded miles do
not have to take place in Gypsy Hill Park. If you would like
to establish an evening/weekend group walk please email
Steven Taetzsch at taetzschst@ci.staunton.va.us.

Carmel, how do we #RecYourLife?

We made it a friends day out with an art class, lunch, and lots of
laughs. The experience provided a therapeutic and creative outlet to
tap into individual artistic talents and abilities and express our unique
styles through the creation of guided art. Diane, the artistic instructor,
encouraged each person to work at their own pace and create from
within. She demonstrated different techniques on how to create forms
using depth, color, contrast, and shadowing. Each piece was beautiful
and different. The experience was educational, inspiring, relaxing, and
empowering. Everyone should give themselves the gift of taking a class
through Staunton Parks & Rec. We liked the experience so much that we
signed up for another class. Carmel Norris
