Flow Measurement

White Paper
Revenue Grade Thermal Energy Measurement.

11 January 2012
Flow Measurement
Transit-Time ultrasonic flow measurement is based on the principal of
sound energy traversing the fluid in a pipe both upstream and downstream where the time difference is impacted proportionally based on
the flow rate. It is imperative to offer a suitably broad range of clamp-on
(Lamb wave) sensors with differing frequencies to achieve the best possible match between the sensors and the resonant frequency of the pipe
wall to provide an accurate measurement. The Siemens Transit-Time ultrasonic flowmeter utilizes Wide-Beam (Lamb Wave) technology to provide a reliable, accurate measurement through the entire flow range under varying application conditions. A key requirement for Revenue Grade
Thermal Energy Measurement is the flow transmitters ability to measure
chilled and hot water under varying conditions ranging from aeration to
high concentrations of glycol. The Siemens FUE1010 flowmeter provides
Transit-Time (WideBeam) and Doppler to assure a reliable, uninterrupted
flow measurement on tough applications allowing for continuous thermal energy monitoring; providing 0.5 1.0% of rate accuracy on line
sizes ranging from on up with a batch repeatability of 0.15% of flow.

Pipe Configuration menu

Existing HVAC lines often do not have the required upstream and downstream pipe
diameters recommended by flowmeter manufacturers to provide a fully developed
flow profile for accurate measurement. The Siemens SITRANS FUE1010 flowmeter
provides a pipe configuration menu allowing the user to choose a pipe configuration from a list and define a number of upstream pipe diameters from where the
transducers are to be installed; allowing the flowmeter to dynamically account for
the effect of flow profile of the liquid and apply a calibration factor to assure accurate flow measurement.
Measurement Parameters / Alarms
A key requirement for Revenue Grade Thermal Energy Measurement is diagnostics
that provide the end-user confidence in the accuracy of the measurement as well as
process conditions. The Siemens SITRANS FUE1010 provides the available application diagnostics:
Speed of Sound (Vs) providing verification of temperature as well as changes in
liquid properties such as water/glycol ration (See attached); most importantly confirms the accuracy of the programmed dimensional parameters of the piping and
the integrity of the measured transit-time.
Aeration (AER) Provide indication of undissolved gases in a hydronic system
Alarms The Siemens SITRANS FUE1010 offers various alarms providing additional
information such as High/Low Flow, High/Low Energy, Aeration increase, and temperature differential alarming set points.
Diagnostics
Signal Analysis The Siemens SITRANS FUE1010 system incorporates a built-in
signal analysis tool which can be used to view and assess the quality of the transducer signal and application in general. This ability provides assurance of the overall
integrity of the installation including outside influences that could impair performance.

Additional Diagnostics The diagnostics also offers many additional parameters

that enable the user to fully evaluate their installation and gather additional information on such variables as Reynolds number, application stability, alarm indicators,
operating margins, and response characteristics.
Temperature Measurement
Siemens provides (Clamp-On or Insertion) 4-wire 1000 ohm platinum RTDs for supply and return temperature measurements that are precision matched to within
0.02F. The FUE1010 flowmeter temperature circuitry is factory calibrated with a
built-in field calibrator. The true 4-wire (Kelvin connection) RTD circuit provides the
highest degree of accuracy and reliability as it is able to cancel out all errors due to
length and resistance imbalance between the leads. Uneven resistance can occur
due to corrosion which will affect 2 and 3 wire sensors; 4-wire RTDs are unaffected
by similar conditions.
