Assignment

1. Figure 1 shows an inclined monometer with one-leg enlarged with zero initial pressure
difference between pipe A and B. It is desired that the manometer give a reading of 0.305
m (measured along the inclined leg) for a pressure difference between pipe A and B of
690 N/m2. Determine the required angle . Neglect the movement of manometer liquid in
the large leg.

2. A tank contains water has an equilateral (equal sides) triangular window as shown on
Figure 2. Determine
a) The magnitude and the line of action of the hydrostatic force acting on the window.
b) The force P required to hold the window closed. Neglect the weight of the window.

a) Figure 4 shows a solid floating block which has two components A and

of different specific weight. The dimensions of the block is H x H x 2.5 H.

Determine A if B is = 2 A. Hence check the stability of the block
shown. The centre of gravity of the block is at 1.2H from the

b) A cylindrical shape instrument of 0.5 m diameter and 1 m height is designed to be
placed vertically in sea water ( = 1025 kg/m3) for research purposes. The top
surface of the instrument must be 0.35 m above the surface of the sea-water for
visibility and safety. Determine the maximum allowable weight in kg for the
instrument. Check whether the instrument will be stable floating in this weight.
