Preface
Dear Reader,
This Introduction into Service Manual presents the
new car2go mobility concept for the smart fortwo
coupe, model series 451.

WIS is updated continuously. Therefore, the information available there reflects the latest technical
status of our vehicles.

The purpose of this brochure is to acquaint you with

the technical highlights of this new vehicle in
advance of its market launch. This brochure is
intended to provide information for people
employed in service or maintenance/repair as well
as for aftersales staff. It is assumed that the reader
is already familiar with the Mercedes-Benz and
smart model series currently on the market.

This Introduction into Service Manual presents

initial information relating to the car2go mobility
concept for the smart fortwo in model series 451
and, as such, is not stored in WIS. The contents are
not maintained and there is no provision for
updates.

In terms of the contents, the emphasis in this Introduction into Service Manual is on presenting new and
modified components and systems.
This Introduction into Service Manual is not
intended as an aid for repairs or for the diagnosis of
technical problems. For such needs, more extensive
information is available in the Workshop Information
System (WIS), via vehicle diagnosis (DAS) and drive
system diagnosis.

We will publicize modifications and new features in

the relevant WIS documents. The information
presented in this Introduction into Service Manual
may therefore differ from the more up-to-date
information found in WIS.
All of the information relating to specifications,
equipment and options are valid as of the copy deadline in June 2011 and may therefore differ from the
current production configuration.

Overview

Brief description
car2go Mobility Concept
A special car2go edition of the smart (model
series 451) is being produced for the new car2go
mobility concept.
car2go is a novel mobility concept with the
following key features:
Large fleets of appropriately marked smart
fortwo vehicles will be distributed throughout the
entire area of densely populated cities with
approx. 500,000 inhabitants or more. The cars will
be made available as "self-service cars" i.e. they
can be used spontaneously by customers at any
time without advance booking.
Interested parties can become customers of
car2go by registering once. This involves validating the customer's driving license and
applying an adhesive label to it which contains an
RFID transponder (RFID = Radio-Frequency IDentification). The special feature of the adhesive
label is that it cannot be removed from the driving
license without irreparably damaging the electronic function of the transponder.
Each car2go vehicle is equipped with a windshield
unit near the bottom left of the windshield, a head
unit which is networked with the vehicle electronics, a touchscreen instead of a radio and a
hands-free system.
Holding a validated driving license against the
RFID reader initiates a rental session (the central
locking of the vehicle opens). Before the customer
can drive off, he or she must enter a secret PIN
number on the touchscreen inside the vehicle and
must confirm that the vehicle is clean and free of
damage. If there are problems or questions, the
customer can contact the service team (call
center) by telephone (hands-free system).

The ignition key for the vehicle, a refueling card

and a parking card for entering parking buildings
are stored in corresponding slots in the head unit
when not in use. These are equipped with a sensor
which the head unit can use to determine the
presence of the key and cards.
At the end of the rental period, the customer once
again confirms that the vehicle is free of damage,
puts the ignition key back in the holder and then
holds their driving license against the card
reader again from the outside. This locks the
vehicle and the rental period ends. If a door or
the liftgate are not properly closed or if the ignition key/refueling card have not been placed back
in the holder, the rental cannot be terminated and
the customer receives a corresponding error
message.
The rental is charged "per minute" and includes
the rental costs, fuel, insurance etc. (all-inclusive
with upper limits per hour and per day). There are
no acceptance or monthly membership charges.
Payment is made via a monthly invoice. The pricing
concept follows that of the mobile phone market
i.e. for the first time ever, it fully converts the
costs of day-to-day automotive mobility into variable costs ("pay as you drive").
The concept includes a service team which cleans
and maintains the vehicles and IT systems which
are used to efficiently control the distribution of
the fleet and the required actions of the service
team.

The windshield unit contains an LC display and
LED, which indicates the status of the vehicle (e.g.
available, occupied) and provides information on
usage.
The card (USA/Canada) or the chip-validated
driving license (ECE) simply has to be held in front
of the windshield unit to start the rental period
and unlock the vehicle.

Overview

Brief description
Head unit
The head unit is the user interface for carrying
out the rental process and providing the radio
and navigation function. It also contains interfaces to the SAM (this inputs the GPS signal and
controls the dialog sequences), to the radio
antenna of the vehicle and to the vehicle
speakers.
At the top of the head unit are slots for the
parking card and refueling card respectively. The
holder for the vehicle key is located on the right.

GPS antenna
The GPS1 antenna is used to determine the
position of the vehicle at the end of the rental
period. It is located above the head unit in the
center of the instrument panel under the uppermost cover.

The GSM2 antenna is used to establish radio data
transmission connections (GPRS3) (e.g. for software updates) and telephone connections to the
service center. It is located at the top right on the
inside of the windshield.

Climate control
The car2go vehicles are available with a temperature-controlled air conditioning system as standard.

AC operating unit
The temperature and blower speed are each set
by means of a slide control. The temperature
blend flap in the air distribution box is operated
mechanically via a Bowden cable. The air distribution is adjusted with a 360 rotating button
switch. The air distribution flap is actuated
mechanically via a cable shaft.
The blower can be adjusted in four power stages.

SAM

Vehicle key

The SAM control unit is modified by flashing the

software. This primarily affects the functions of
the drive authorization system and the central
locking.

Encrypted communication takes place between

the head unit and SAM to enable the car2go
customer key. This is based on the AES encryption
standard (Advanced Encryption Standard).

Vehicle unlocking by the SAM control unit at the

start of the rental period takes place after
request/enabling by the head unit as soon as the
customer has identified themselves as authorized
to rent the vehicle via the windshield unit.

The immobilizer is only deactivated after the head

unit is queried via the CAN bus.

Once the immobilizer has been deactivated by the

head unit, the engine start enable signal is, as
previously, issued by the SAM if the drive authorization system recognizes the key as "correct".
