History of Google Street View

Street View had its origins in 2001 with The Stanford City Block Project, a
Google-sponsored Stanford University research project. The project ended in
June 2006, and its technology was folded into Street View.

2007: Launched on 25 May in the United States using Immersive Media technology.
2008: In May Google announces that it was testing face-blurring technology on its
photos of the busy streets of Manhattan. The technology uses a computer algorithm to
search Google's image database for faces and blurs them. Street View integrated
into Google Earth 4.3, the Maps application on the Apple iPhone, and the Maps
application for S60 3rd Edition. In November, the drag and drop peg man icon is
introduced as the primary user interface element for connecting from Maps 2D view
into Street View's 3D view. When Pegman is dropped onto a particular set of
coordinates in Google Maps for which Street View data is available, Street View
opens and takes over the whole map window.
2009: Introduction of full-screen option. Smart Navigation introduced allowing users
to navigate around the panoramas by double-clicking with their cursor on any place or
object they want to see.
2010: Indoor views of businesses available. Google invites users to contribute
panoramas of their own using gadgets with Android 4.2. Google highlights usercontributed panoramas with blue circle icons on Maps. The company also created a
website to highlight places in the world where one can find them.
2013: Business interior views are shown as small orange circles. Businesses such as
shops, cafs and other premises can pay a photographer to take panoramic images of
the interior of their premises which are then included in Street View. Google sets up
program to let third parties borrow the Street View Trekker (a backpack mounted
camera) and contribute imagery to Google Maps.
2014: Street-level imagery from the past can now be seen, if available for a given
street view.
2015: A partnership was announced between Street View and the environmental
monitoring company Aclima. Cars began carrying sensors to detect pollutants such as
nitrogen, ozone, and particulate matter. In October, support for Google Cardboard was
announced allowing users to explore street view in 360 degree virtual reality.

Implementation of Google Street View

Street View is available as a component of Google Maps, as a web

application, and as a mobile application for Android and IOS.
Originally, Google Maps used Adobe Flash for Street View. Google
overhauled Google Maps in 2013. The newer version
uses JavaScript extensively
and
has
a
JavaScript application
programming interface.
The new Google Maps and Street View are slower than the old
version. A user can switch to the old version of Google Maps, which is
especially useful when Google Maps is more sluggish than usual.

Data Capturing Equipment

Cameras: Street View imagery has come from several generations of
camera systems developed in-house. The cameras contain no mechanical
parts, including the shutter, instead using CMOS sensors and an
electronic rolling shutter.
Widely deployed versions are:
R2: the earliest photos were captured with a ring of eight 11megapixel CCD sensors with commercial photographic wide-angle
lenses.
R5: uses a ring of eight 5-megapixel CMOS sensors with custom lowflare lenses, plus a fisheye lens on top to capture upper levels of
buildings.
R7: uses 15 of the same sensors and lenses as R5, but no fish-eye.
Positioning: recorded photographs must be associated with accurate
Laser range scanners from Sick AG for the measuring of up to 50 meters
180 in the front of the vehicle. These are used for recording the actual
dimensions of the space being photographed.
Vehicles: data recording equipment is usually mounted on the roof of a
car. A Trike (tricycle) was developed to record pedestrian routes
including Stonehenge, and other UNESCO World Heritage sites. In 2010
a snowmobile-based system captured the 2010 Winter
Olympics sites. Trolleys have been used to shoot the insides of museums,
and in Venice the narrow roads were photographed with backpackmounted cameras, and canals were photographed from boats.

STREET VIEW CAR:

We've come a long way since our initial U.S. launch in 2007; today we've
expanded our 360-degree panoramic views to include locations on all seven
continents.

STREET VIEW TREKKER

The Trekker enables Street View to feature more places around the world places no car, trike, trolley or snowmobile can access. This wearable
backpack is outfitted with a camera system on top, and its portability
enables us to gather images while manoeuvring through tight, narrow
spaces or locations only accessible by foot. Our first collection using this
camera technology was taken along the rough, rocky terrain of Arizona's
Grand Canyon.

6|Page

STREET VIEW TROLLEY

When a group of art-loving Googlers wanted to take Street View
technology to museums around the world, we needed to develop a system
that could easily fit through museum doorways and navigate around
sculptures. This first foray indoors fit all the necessary equipment onto a
smaller frame: a push-cart mounted with a camera system dubbed the
Trolley. It has not only collected views from inside museums, but also
other indoor locations like the White House and sports stadiums.

STREET VIEW SNOWMOBILE

Another place we thought it'd be fun to take the Street View cameras is on
the slopes. Over a few weekends using some 2x4s, duct tape, and extra
hard drives wrapped in ski jackets to endure the freezing conditions, the
team was able to successfully mount the Street View equipment on a
snowmobile. Skiers, snowboarders and snowshoers can now explore
Whistler Blackcomb Mountain and the bumpy snowy terrain of many ski
resorts around.

7|Page

STREET VIEW TRIKE

While we've been able to visit some beautiful places around the world
with the Street View car, some of the most interesting and fun places
aren't accessible by car. In order to reach some of the narrow alleyways in
Europe, like those in Barcelona and Paris, a team of engineers built a
tricycle-based camera system. This three-wheel pedi-cab with a camera
system on top automatically gathers imagery as the operator pedals along.
As a result, we've shared views from locations including theme parks,
university campuses, zoos, Stonehenge, and UNESCO World Heritage
sites across the globe.

Steps for Making Google Business View

Step 1: Collecting Imagery
First off we need to actually drive around and photograph the locations to show
in Street View. We pay close attention to many factors, including the weather
and the population density of various areas, to determine when and where can
collect the best possible imagery.

Step 2 : Aligning Imagery

To match each image to its geographic location on the map, we combine signals
from sensors on the car that measure GPS, speed and direction. This helps us
reconstruct the car's exact route, and even tilt and realign images as needed.

21 | P a g e

Step 3: Turning Photos into 360-Degree Panoramas

To avoid gaps in the panoramas, adjacent cameras take slightly overlapping

pictures, and then we "stitch" the photos together into a single 360-degree
image. We then apply special image processing algorithms to lessen "seams"
and create smooth transitions.

Step 4: Showing You the Right Image

How quickly the car's three lasers reflect off surfaces tells us how far a building
or object is, and enables us to construct 3D models. When you move to an area
in the distance, the 3D model determines the best panorama to show you for that
location.

22 | P a g e

Reasons you should get a Google Business View Shoot:

Potential customers, clients, or patients want to know what your place looks
like. If its a nice environment, it can be a selling point. But even an
dingy little hovel can have a certain charm, and its usually wise to let people
know what theyre in for

The photo shoot may encourage more people to click through to your Places
page or website. It shows up in your knowledge graph and in the Maps tab.

23 | P a g e

24 | P a g e

It may be a ranking factor. Trusted photographer Jeff Finkelstein explored

that possibility in a nice MOZ post last year, and he offered some good
insights in my follow-up post. My guess is that a Google Business View
photo shoot by itself is at most a very minor ranking factor, but can help
your rankings more indirectly, because it can get more people to click
(and Google knows when someone clicks). Again, just a hunch.

The See inside view is front-and-center when you view the Google
Places page on a Smartphone. (Its even more prominent than it is on
desktop.

You can embed the photo shoot on your site.

25 | P a g e

You get 10 professionally-taken still photos.

Someone else is taking the time to take photos. That saves you time
especially if youre picky about your photos. To take good photos is rarely
quick or easy, because its a numbers game.
You can reuse the still shots elsewhere on your site and on your nonGoogle business listings. You own the photos for good. You can do
whatever youd like with them. And if you dont have a good cover photo
yet, maybe you just found one.

26 | P a g e

It can be the start of a quid pro quo with your photographer. Google Trusted
Photographers often have other online-marketing skills, so especially if you
like the photo shoot and them personally you can probably get their help in
other areas. Its also possible you could get a link and/or a citation from the
photographer.

Google seems to have plans for Business View. Its been around for almost 5
years now which is about 68 in Google product years.
Its getting phased in, not phased out. In the Google My
Business rebrand / facelift they put a pitch for it right at the top of your
dashboard (unless youre a service-area or home-based business).

Marketing Department

Here in marketing department Mr. Hemak Goswami and his brother Mr.
Chitrak Goswami are the heads who has guided us during the internship.
There were mainly 2 kinds of the sales strategies used for the bringing the
clients and providing them the best of our work.

39 | P a g e

During the internship we have mainly focused on the 1st Strategy where
we our self have to target the potential clients by searching on the web portals
like www.google.com, www.justdial.com, www.zomato.com, etc. where we can
easily get knowledge about existing as well as the newly opened automobile
showrooms restaurants, clothing stores, pet stores, specialty clinics, hotels, etc.
After searching these we make contact with the main decision maker
person or in bigger scale unit the concern person who takes decision of
marketing and branding. We individually meet to the client by ourselves and if
there is a need we also ask Hemak sir or Chitrak sir to come with us.
When the client gives us the confirmation we make an agreement
containing details of the client like: Date, Business Name, Business Address,
Concern person name, Concern person phone no, Contract Amount, Sign of the
person as well as our marketing executive.
Example:

The next step is the photo-shoot. We co-ordinate with our Photographers

team through mail with the full details of the photo-shoot which is as follows:
Business Name:
Business Address:
Business Plan:
Shoot Date:
Shoot Time:
Panoramas to be taken:

Photography Department
Here the photography department is handled by one of the heads of the
company whose name is Mital Patel. There are 6 professionally trained and
Google certified photographers team in this department. Their works starts
when the executives of marketing departments send them the details of photoshoot on mail. They also have to take follow-up of the client before photo-shoot
for the amenity/area/venue where the photo-shoot is to be done is ready or not.
Then they reach to the mentioned place and do the panoramic
photography or other imaging solution which the client requires. As per the
terms and condition built by the company they also have to collect the rest of
the payment on the completion of their work.
They submit the photography to the technical department and further
process takes place of the editing and creating walkthrough.

Technical Department
The technical department is the final and the most important department
of the company where all the technical work of collecting images, editing,
creating walkthrough, uploading on Google maps, etc takes place. The
department is headed by the Founder and Director of the company Mr. Rakesh
Panchal.
The technical department also provides technical support to the clients
like registering the clients business on Google, listing on Google map, Google
Ad-words, etc.
In the last week of internship we also had an experience of this
department and learnt many things like how to make the GBV from the normal
panoramic images, how to make listing of business in Google map, etc.
The total process from confirmation of client till the uploadation of their
business on Google takes 15-20 days of time.

Findings
Jindal RHM Interactive Pvt. Ltd. is a well known and organized
company.
The current market position of the company is No. 1 in Gujarat, No.4 in
India.
The company is facing tough competition in Ahmedabad from the rival
company named VOX360 but other than Ahmedabad the markets of other
cities are still open. Hence, the company can further grow and have a
great list of clients in future time.
Jindal RHM Interactive Pvt. Ltd. provides good opportunity to the
freshers in marketing field and makes them learn the market situation and
how to face the prevailing market competition.
Many Freelancer photographers are prevailing in the market but the
quality of work done through Jindal RHM Interactive Pvt. Ltd. is far
better than them and there is no certainty of their work would remain on
Google on permanent basis or not. But Jindal RHM Interactive Pvt. Ltd.
gives surety for the same.

45 | P a g e

Suggestions
Jindal RHM Interactive Pvt. Ltd. should have to improve their website
and put some latest examples of their work so that client spent more time
and get attracted from the company.
Though the company is on the top position but still they have to work
with more focus and get in to continuous touch with their past clients so
that they can have their future projects shared with them.
They also have to target the cities where no work or lesser amount of
work is done by the other competitors so they can have more expansion
in terms of the work.
Jindal RHM Interactive Pvt. Ltd. is doing within the country even they
have done some work outside the India, but still if they wanted to grow
they have to look for other countries too where the reach or availability of
other competitors is nearly zero or negligible.

Conclusion

In conclusion, we would say it was a great experience of working with

one of the fastest growing company Jindal RHM Interactive Pvt. Ltd. in
the Google Business View industry.
Had good knowledge of real market situations under the guidance of our
head Mr. Hemak Goswami, Mr. Rakesh Panchal, Mr. Mital Patel & other
team members who has make the company at the top position in todays
time.
We also learn how to behave in certain situations, improved our soft
skills, business etiquettes, proper knowledge about the products which we
are dealing with and the future scope of the same.
It was also a great opportunity to meet with many persons who are
counted in the cream peoples of Ahmedabad like: Director of the Daastan
Farm, Managing Director of Kalhar Blues & Greens, etc and also
travelled many other cities like Nadiad, Surat, Baroda, Gandhinagar,
Aanand.
Really we would whole-heartedly thankful to our head Mr. Hemak
Goswami (Jindal RHM Interactive Pvt. Ltd.) and my institute K S School
of Business Management for providing us such kind of opportunity.
