A Guide to Telling the IELTS Examiner Lies

IwaschattingtoanIELTSexamineraboutthingsthatstopstudentsdoingwellontheirspeakingandwriting
testsandonethinghesaidwasreallyinterestingThespeakingandwritingtestsarenotliedetectortests.

Whathemeansisthatmanystudentsthinkthatyouhavetotelltheabsolutetruth.Youdont.
Forexample,astudentinhisclasswasaskedtodescribetheirfavouriteoutfitduringapracticeexercise.The
studentsaidtheycouldntrememberanydetailsabouttheirfavouriteoutfit,sotheystoppedspeakingafter10
seconds.Whenaskedaboutthis,thestudentexplainedthattheyreallycouldntrememberanything,sothere
wasnothingtheycoulddo.Therewas,lie!
Youwillneverlosemarksforbeingdishonestduringthetest,aslongasyourliessoundplausibleandanswer
thequestion.
Forexample,thestudentabovecouldhavesimplyinventedtheirfavouriteoutfitandthenaddedimaginary
details.Inthiswaytheywouldhavebeentellingastorythatisfalse,buttheywouldgetamuchhigherscore
fortheiranswerbecauseitwasfullydeveloped.

Part 1 Speaking
Mostofthesequestionswillbeaboutyou,soyoushouldntreallyhavetolie.However,theremightbesome
thingsthatyoucantremember.Whenthishappensyoucansimplyelaboratewithafewthingsthatmightnot
betrue.
Forexample,youmightbeaskedtotelltheexamineraboutyourhouse.Ifyoucantrememberthenamesof
theroomsorthedifferentfurniture,simplytellthemaboutrooms/furniturethatyoucanremember,evenifthey
arenotactuallyinyourhome.

Part 2 Speaking
Peopleoftenrunoutofthingstosayinthispartanditismucheasierifyoucanmakethingsup.
Youmighthavetodescribeyourfavouritebookorthelastmovieyouwatched.Ifyoucantremembersomeof
thedetails,dontpanic,simplyaddinfalsedetails.Dontworry,theexaminerisnevergoingtostopyouand
tellyouthatitisuntrue.Itismuchbettertolieandkeeptalking,thanhesitateorpausebecauseyouhave
nothingtotalkabout.
Forexample,Iaskedastudenttotalkaboutthelastmovietheysaw.Idontknowwhy,buttheysaidthey
couldntrememberthelastmovie.Itoldthemtojusttellmeaboutanymovietheycouldremember.Isntthat
tellinglies?saidthestudent.Itdoesntmatter,itisaspeakingtest,notanhonestytest.

Part 3 Speaking
Thisisprobablythepartthatwillhelpyouthemostbecauseyouwillbeaskedquestionsthatyoumightnot
knowmuchaboutandtheexamineralsowantsyoutogivefullydeveloped,extendedanswers.
Ifyouknownothingaboutwhattheexaminerisaskingbecauseyouhavenoexperiencedealingwiththat
topic,pretendyoudo.IwasdoingaspeakingtesttodayandIaskedastudenttwoquestions:
1.Arepolicerespectedinyourcountry?
2.Whoisrespectedmore,policeorlawyers?
Shehadnoideahowtoanswerthesebecauseshesaidshehadnevermetapoliceofficeroralawyerinher
entirelife.Heranswerswerenotsogoodbecauseofthisandherfluencyreallysuffered.Insteadshecould
havesimplymadeupsomestoriesorfactsandtoldmewhatshethought.Itwouldhavebeenmuchbetterfor
hertospeculatewhatpeoplethinkofpoliceandlawyers,thantostumblethroughheranswerswithmostly
ummmsandahhhhs.

Rememberthereisnorightorwronganswertothesequestions.Theexaminerisnottestingyourabilityto
giveacorrectanswer,theyaretestingyourabilitytocommunicateinEnglish.

Writing Task 2
Eachofyourmainideasinyouressayshouldbesupportedbyanexample.Thishelpstofullydevelopyour
ideasandboostsyourscore.OneofthecomplaintsIhearfromstudentsisthattheycannotthinkofexamples.
Again,makethemup.
Youhavetobemorecarefulwiththesebecausetheyreallymustsoundplausible.Iwasteachingastudent
thistechniqueandintheirnextessayaboutbanningsmokinginpublicplacestheysaid92%ofBritishpeople
diedfrompassivesmokinglastyear.Thisisamadeupexample,butitistotallyunbelievable.Youshouldonly
usemadeupexamplesthatmakesenseandactuallyhelpsupportyourmainidea.

Wont the examiner check?

No.Theexaminerswontbetakingouttheirphonesandcheckingallofyourfacts.Theyaretestingyourability
tocommunicateinEnglish,nothowtruthfulyousound.

Should I lie as much as possible?

No.Thisisnotwhatthisguideisabout.Tellingthetruthshouldalwaysbeyourfirstoptionbecauseitismuch
easiertotalkaboutsomethingthatisreal.However,ifyouarestrugglingtofindananswer,dontbeafraidto
makesomedetailsup.

it.IalwaystellthemtoforgetrecentlyandanswerthequestionsayingAcoupleofweeksago/last

Whenyoutakerecentlyoutthequestionoftenbecomesmoremanageable.LikeyouItellthemthat
