On a very clear day

Despite improved air quality over the years, when most people think of southern
California, smog, haze and traffic are the first things that come to mind. Despite the
regions sooty reputation, clear skies usually follow Santa Ana winds or storm systems blowing through the area. Such was the case when we took to the air after a
winter storm hit in December, leaving in its wake visibility almost as far as the eye
could see.
At 400 feet, Mt. Baldy Village has many more clear days than down
in the valley. Conditions on this day, looking south and showing
the Glendora Ridge Road in the background, were particularly picture-perfect.

Just south of the Claremont Wilderness Park is a cell tower,

but the most of the terrain is dominated by rugged nature. This
image shows a clear view of the mountains surrounding Lake
Arrowhead and Big Bear Lake.

The 210 freeway and Base Line Road head in the same westerly direction for miles
as seen here about 10 minutes after sunset from 382 feet.

2016 in Claremont: the city of trees and committees

Former Police

Cooper, City
Manager Tony
Ramos and
Assistant
City Manager
Colin Tudor
listen to member comments
during a meeting of the
Police Facility
Ad Hoc
Committee.

016 was a banner, if a little divisive, year for

Claremont. As the city
moved forward with a number
of projects, the towns civically
minded residents expressed
passionate support from both
sides of the aisle.

Consider the uproar over the upcoming Pomona College Museum of Art.
The plans outlined by Pomona College
call for a state-of-the-art museum to be
placed on the site of the historic Renwick House. The house is scheduled to
be moved across the street to the southeast corner of College Avenue and Second Street to make room.
Throughout the vetting process, residents and city officials clamored for
and against the plans, with supporters
noting them as a welcome addition to
Claremont and a bridge between town
and gown, and detractors accusing
Pomona College and the city of not
properly illustrating the potential impact of the project.
The plans also laid bare the bureau-

cracy that is the Claremont process.

After the planning commission gave a
negative recommendation on the
Pomona College Master Plan, zone
change and environmental impact report (EIR), it was sent to the council,
where the divided councilmembers
voted 3-2 in favor of the project, but
not the supermajority needed for the
plans to move forward.
After an ad hoc committee failed to
reach a recommendation, the city council passed the plans by a narrow 3-2
simple majority using a clause in the
city codes that allows a simple majority
vote after a committee is convened.
Pomona College and proponents of
the plans rejoiced, but detractors did
not stop there. A group calling themselves Citizens to Save College Avenue was organized, issuing a notice
to the city to invalidate the approval of
the plans or face litigation. The upcoming museum (some have called it an
administrative building due to the notion that classrooms and offices will
also be part of the facility) will move
forward into 2017 with the looming
threat of a lawsuit.

A line of local citizens wishing to address the Claremont City Council stretches
out the door as the fatigue of a long meeting shows on the expression of resident Jacob Patterson in May. The museum Pomona College plans to build, along
with the related issues such as moving Renwick House, resulted in some very
long council meetings.

plans were rebooted in 2016. A special

ad hoc committee gathered to pick up
the pieces of the failed Measure PS.
Claremont was forced to start at square
one after PS failed at the ballot box in
2015.
The 15-member committee met
throughout the first half of the year,
poring over details and hammering out
a plan that would be enticing to Claremont voters.
The result was an up-to-$30 million
facility to be built at the current police
station site with a threetier financing
systema yet-to-be-determined contribution from the Claremont Colleges,
general fund money to cover costs such
as technology and furniture and a general obligation (GO) bond to cover
whatever is left over. The plan was approved by the city council and is set to
appear on the June 2017 ballot.
But perhaps the biggest story of the
year was the decision against Claremont in the right-to-take trial over the
water system. For years, the city has
worked toward its goal of claiming eminent domain over a system currently
owned by Golden State Water Company.
City officials cited operational deficiencies, a lack of transparency and rate
increases as some of the reasons for the
takeover, while Golden State contended
that Claremont would essentially be
taking over the system as is, negating
the citys claim that a system under
local control would be a more necessary use for the community.
After a 21-day trial in the Los Angeles Superior Court, Judge Richard Fruin
sided with Golden State, issuing a 41page decision that refuted every claim
the city tried to make during the
takeover trial. The saga may not be
over, howeverthe city council will
meet in January to consider a possible
appeal.
Claremont also got a new police
chief after months of searching. Chief

Shelly Vander Veen was sworn in as the

new chief nearly a year after outgoing
chief Paul Cooper announced his retirement. Chief Vander Veen, the first
woman to become Claremonts chief,
has been with the department for 23
years, moving through the ranks from
officer to top cop.
Chief Vander Veen will undoubtedly
set out to tackle the citys ongoing issue
with property crimes. The city, in an effort to curb residential burglaries and
other crimes in town, deployed see
something, say something signs
throughout town, urging residents to
stay vigilant and report possible criminal activity.
The citizens also banded together in
an effort to curb train noise. Throughout the year, Metrolink was using
BNSF locomotives while their engines
were sidelined during an accident investigation, and those locomotives
louder train horns were causing
headaches for residents living near the
tracks.
An ad hoc committee was created by
the traffic and transportation commission to deal with the noise, and the city
council approved a feasibility study to
look into establishing a quiet zone
throughout Claremont. That study
should be due in the early part of 2017.
While 2016 was a busy year for the
city, 2017 should be even more interesting. A crowded field of city council
candidates will make for a competitive
March 7 election, and voters are set to
decide on the fate of a new police station in June.
As with every issue, Claremonters
will tackle them head-on, determining
the future of the City of Trees.
Heres to a wonderful and productive
2017.

Claremont police take a suspect into custody following a house-by-house search
following a September burglary in Claremont. Police responded to a call at 11:10
a.m. on Yuba Lane where they contacted two males, taking one into custody. The
other fled on foot leading to the search. A multi-agency effort, including a Sheriffs
department helicopter and police K-9 units, eventually located the other guy hiding in a side yard on the 3300 block of Grand Avenue. He was also arrested.

ts no secret that the police

blotter is the most widely
read part of the COURIER.

Theres something to be said about

Claremonters diving into the pages and reading up on the citys weekly round-up of arrests. Here are some of the more unusal blotter entries of 2016, from disastrous drunks
to terrible thieves.
JANUARY
An unidentified shoplifter entered the
MW Smoke Shop on the 400 block of Auto
Center Drive at approximately 9:43 a.m. on
January 18 and stole several boxes of California State Lottery Scratcher tickets, according to Lt. Mike Ciszek. He then left in
an unknown direction. The estimated property loss was around $800, but the thief
probably only won around $20.
FEBRUARY
Police say Allen Pool, 61, entered Stater
Bros at approximately 3:15 p.m. on February 23 and went directly to aisle 10, where
he shoved a number of razor packets into
his pants and walked out of the store. Employees recognized Mr. Pool from previous
encounters and called police. Officers observed Mr. Pool reaching into his pants
pockets and throwing the razor packages on
the ground, according to Lt. Ciszek. He reportedly told police, What are those?
What are you talking about? I didnt steal
those. Mr. Pool was arrested for shoplifting and sent to CPD jail. He was arrested
for the same crime on February 11 and is
suspected of two other razor thefts at the
same location.
MARCH
Police once again arrested 42-year-old
Allen Perez of Pomona for public intoxication on March 2 after receiving a call regarding a possible drunk person on College
Avenue. When approached by officers and
asked if he had been drinking, Mr. Perez

replied, Yeah, were good, according to

Lt. Ciszek. When officers asked Mr. Perez
what day it was, he replied, Today is a day.
Mr. Perez has been arrested more than 30
times in four-and-a-half years for public intoxication.
APRIL
Police were called to a home on the 700
block of Santa Barbara Drive around 11 p.m.
on April 10 regarding a woman swimming
in the pool. Police found 28-year-old Tamara Becker of Alhambra running naked
across the front yard of the house, according to Det. Hector Tamayo. Officers gave
chase and followed Ms. Becker north on Tulane Road before she was caught. Ms. Becker told police she was coming from a
bachelorette party. She was uncooperative
with officers, at one point yelling, F**k
you. You guys are f**ked up. When
asked how much she had to drink, Ms.
Becker replied, I had as many shots as the
bride wanted me to. She was arrested for
public intoxication and transported to jail.
MAY
Just before 6 p.m. on May 20 on Sweetbriar Drive, 22-year-old Ali Taghipour of
Riverside was traveling west and attempting to make a U-turn in his car, when he hit
a curb. The passenger in the car punched Mr.
Taghipour in the face, which caused the driver to crash into a parked car. When police
arrived, they determined Mr. Taghipour was
under the influence of a controlled substance
and arrested him. He was transported to
CPD jail and eventually released. The passenger was not arrested.
JUNE
Someone left behind two bags of
methamphetamine near Bridges Auditorium, which were found by a janitor on June
8 around 12:30 p.m. The owner was never located.
JULY
An Upland man was arrested for DUI af-

ter crashing his car into a fence and calling

the police on himself. John Rush, 25, was
driving his 2016 Chevrolet truck around 3
a.m. on July 11 when he collided with a
fence on the 300 block of Villanova. He then
called police and said he crashed his car
into a house, Det. Hardin said. When police arrived, they determined that Mr. Rush
was under the influence of alcohol, and he
was arrested and transported to CPD jail.
AUGUST
Police arrested a Pomona man after he
made quite the scene in the Motel 6 lobby
on August 28. Rudy Orcasitas, 25, was allegedly on meth and drawing on his face
with ink pens, according to Lt. Ciszek. The
police were called and Mr. Orcasitas, who
has had numerous run-ins with local police
in the past, was taken into custody for being under the influence of a controlled substance and transported to CPD jail.
SEPTEMBER
A Riverside man was arrested on a
drunk and disorderly charge after police
gave him a golden opportunity to get a ride
home. Police found 35-year-old Kenneth
Arellano passed out in the drivers seat of
a white two-door Honda Accord in front of
Bank of America around 3:45 a.m. on September 25, Lt. Ciszek said. Officers gave Mr.
Arellano an option to get a ride home, and
he contacted an Uber to come pick him up.
A short time later, the Uber returned to the
scene and Mr. Arellano exited, telling officers he was going to wait 30 minutes to
drive home because he would be sober
enough to drive, Lt. Ciszek said. He was
arrested and was later released without
charges after sobering up.
OCTOBER
Police arrested Jose Gonzalez, 59, on a
drunk and disorderly charge after he tried
to sleep it off in the grass at Motel 6 on October 12. The Ontario man allegedly walked
into the lobby around 9:15 p.m., turned in
his car keys to the front desk, walked outside and took a nap. Mr. Gonzalez told police he had had only three beers. When officers asked if he knew where he was, he
replied, Chino, or something. He was
eventually given a free ride to sleep it off
in a Claremont jail cell.
NOVEMBER
Police received reports of a man darting
in and out of traffic around Indian Hill
Boulevard and the 10 Freeway around 5:45
p.m. on November 30. When police arrived,
they found 25-year-old Matthew Higgins
from Amarillo, Texas walking directly into
the path of oncoming cars. He was nearly
struck, as well as delaying traffic, Lt.
Ciszek said. He was arrested and sent to
CPD jail, where he was held for detox and
released without charges.
DECEMBER
A Pomona resident, Andrew Belasco, 52,
was apparently making noise inside the
Claremont Public Library just before 5 p.m.
on December 7 when a juvenile asked him
to be quiet. Mr. Belasco responded by taking off his shirt and challenging the kid to
a fight. The police were called and during
the investigation it was revealed that Mr.
Belasco was under the influence of an unknown stimulant, Lt. Ciszek said. He was
arrested and transported to CPD jail.

EDUCATION

Claremont COURIER/Friday, December 30, 2016

2016 school news included a bond, solar installation, activism

n 2016, much of the COURIERs

education coverage focused on the
Claremont Unified School Districts
successful attempt to pass a $58 million
general obligation bond in the November 8 general election.
With 66 percent of local voters giving
Measure G the thumbs-up, you could call
its passage a slam-dunk. It was, however,
by no means a Hail Mary shot. It came
after months of research, deliberation and
promotion on the part of CUSD staff,
board members and community advocates.
District staff spent much of 2015 winnowing down $111 million in identified
facilities needs, aiming to halve the dollar
amount by only choosing projects that reflected CUSDs highest priorities.
With this done, school board membersthrough a show of hands at a January 2016 special workshopagreed unanimously that they were disposed to pursue
a facilities bond.
The board wouldnt vote on whether or
not to put the measure on the November
ballot until June but, as Superintendent
Jim Elsasser noted, there was much to
mull over in the interim.
Would the community support a school
bond and, if so, how large?
Beginning with a February 9 gathering,
Mr. Elsasser and Assistant Superintendent
of Business Services Lisa Shoemaker conducted 38 public meetings where they collected community feedback on just those
questions.
Then it was time to select the projects to
be included in the bond. A couple items
were non-negotiable, Ms. Shoemaker noted: a district-wide roofing project and energy-efficiency upgrades.
At their August 4 meeting, the board
voted unanimously to place a $58 million
school facilities bond on the November
ballot. The bond, soon dubbed Measure G,
was bolstered by the efforts of a specially
formed advocacy group called RISE (Renew Infrastructure and Sustain Excellence).
The community showed considerable
support, submitting dozens of pro-bond
letters and columns to the COURIER.
With the bond having passed handily,
the district plans to hit the ground running
to nab the lowest possible interest rates
and construction prices.
At the start of January, CUSD will put
out a Request for Qualifications for Architectural and Engineering Services,
Service Center Director Rick Cota said.
Once the architectural team has been chosen, it will be time to start the construction
bidding process.
The district hopes to start some projects
as soon as this summerroofing, the installation of an HVAC system in the CHS
gym and the renovation of the CHS and El
Roble swimming pools.
Were excited to have all of this going
on, though, because its going to benefit
the kids, Mr. Cota said.
SUNNY SIDE UP
A contract struck between CUSD and a
solar power company is another achievement bringing a ray of light to Claremont

COURIERphotos/Steven Felschundneff
The solar panels at Claremont High are nearly finished as the school begins
winter recess. When completed, the panels will cover a large section of the main
parking lot at the school, providing both electricity and shade for students.

Richard Fass, who argued in favor of

Measure G, listens to the comments of
Jay Pocock, who argued against it, in
October during Active Claremonts forum on the referendum at the Hughes
Center. Claremont voters approved the
measure, which authorizes $58 million
in bonds to fund construction at Claremont schools.

schools this year.

With energy prices escalating and with
the district nestled in a town priding itself
on sustainability, CUSD has long been
interested in going solar but, with limited
funds, couldnt see a way to do it.
Enter PFMG Solar, a company with a
business model that has proved attractive
for cash-strapped school districts. A district
leases sunlight-collecting arrays from
PFMG Solar, which installs them at sites
across the district with no money down.
The aim of PFMG is to get every site in
a district generating 75 percent of the power it uses. As part of the terms of the lease,
the district agrees thatduring the 25year lifespan of the solar arraysit will
buy the percentage of power it generates
from PFMG, at a cheaper price than that
offered by Southern California Edison.
The remainder of energy will be purchased from SCE.
At an August 2015 meeting, the school
board met Alex Smith, vice president of
sales for PFMG, learning that rather than
rooftop panels, the company specializes in
solar arrays that can be placed as energycollecting shade structures near playing
fields or in parking lots.
Its projected the arrays could save the
district at least $6 million over the next 25
years, particularly given the trend of escalating prices at SCE.
At its December 17 gathering, the

school board voted unanimously to sign

the contract with PFMG Solar.
By the end of October, fencing was up
at all 10 CUSD school sites and the district
office. Construction is moving along nicely, according to Mr. Cota. The district
hopes the projectwhich includes parking lot overhangs at CHS, El Roble and
Danbury schools as well as the district office and freestanding shade structures at
San Antonio High School and the remaining elementary schoolswill be up
and running by March.
ACTIVE DISSENT
The Claremont Colleges are known for
their student activism and none more so
than Pitzer College, widely considered the
most liberal of the citys undergraduate institutions. A few causes, however, drew
puzzlement and even ire from people
across the nation.
The most controversial incident took
place prior to the start of the school year,
when Kar Urea (Pitzer 18) posted on
Facebook that she and two friends were
planning to live off-campus and needed a
third roommate.
Along with mentioning some financial
particulars, she noted all potential new
roomies should be POC (people of color)
only. I dont want to live with any white
folks, she emphasized for those who didnt catch her drift.
When a fellow student expressed concern about Ms. Ureas caveatPOC
only? Maybe Im missing something or
misunderstanding your post, but how is
that not a racist thing to say?the thread
continued, with Pitzer students, student
government officers and even Resident
Assistants (RA) defending Ms. Ureas attitude.
This is to protect POC, not white people. Dont see how this is racist at all, one
student replied, while another agreed she
would be far more comfortable living
with other POC so she didnt have to
tiptoe around fragile white feelings in a
space where students unwind.
One woman, an Africana Studies major
and RA asserted that white people are
damaging as f*ck, making it so POC
students need to protect themselves from

a damaging environment.
The thread was first picked up by The
Claremont Independent, a conservative
online publication that covers and scrutinizes the Claremont Colleges. Word of
the POC-only housing request next spread
throughout mainstream news, from an August 11 COURIER article to TV news
coverage to stories in publications ranging
from the Washington Post to Teen Vogue.
Many questioned how minority students managed to feel so marginalized at
a school like Pitzer, where students resoundingly selected Angela Davis as 2012
commencement speaker. More recently,
Pitzers keynote speaker at the 2016 graduation was social activist Patrisse Cullors,
co-creator of the Twitter hashtag #BlackLivesMatter.
Among online critics, a common epithet used for Pitzer students and their peers
across the country was special
snowflakes who would melt in the realworld.
They characterized todays young people as being cosseted, through actions like
providing safe spaces for discussion and
professors growing tendency to provide
trigger warnings before discussing potentially disturbing subject matter.
Despite the uproar, students like Josue
Pasillaspresident of the Pitzer College
Student Senateflatly denied that the students request for non-white roommates
was racist.
Pitzers president Melvin Oliver, who
had just stepped into his role as the colleges first African-American president,
asserted in an August statement that the
campus would face social challenges as a
unit.
Recently, an article in local media
quoted Facebook comments made by
Pitzer students regarding their preference
in race for their roommates in non-Pitzer
housing. Specifically, the post indicated
that only people of color should inquire
about the housing option, President Oliver stated in his first-ever email to the Pitzer
College community. While Pitzer is a
community of individuals passionately
engaged in establishing intracultural safe
spaces for marginalized groups, the Facebook post and several subsequent comments are inconsistent with our Mission
and values.
It is yet to be seen what 2017 will yield
as far as the racial atmosphere at Pitzer
College and at US academic institutions at
large. Just this month, it was announced
that there would be another pioneering
new college president in town. Come fall,
G. Gabrielle Starr will succeed Pomona
College President David Oxtoby as the
schools first African-American president.
Scripps College also hired a new president, with Lara Tiedens taking the reins as
the ninth president of Scripps College.
The above is just a small sample of the
educational happenings that galvanized
Claremont this year. Whether the local
academic scene is celebratory or characterized by dissent, one thing is clear: People in the City of Trees are passionate
about education.

Words in review: the useful and the unnecessary

by Mellissa Martinez

t the beginning of the year, The

American Dialect Society held its
annual Word of the Year (WOTY)
conference where they officially recognized the entry of several new expressions
and Internet phrases into our dialect.
Aside from detailing when, how and why each term
came to be, they also gave out high school yearbooktype honors, such as Most Popular and Most Likely
to Succeed. Lets look back on the year to see how
some of the fledglings have held up.
The recipient of Most Useful went to the pronoun
they, used as a singular (as in my friend John said they
could make it to the party!). Linguists identify pronouns
as closed word classes meaning that, unlike other types
of words, they are not able to take on new meaning. Despite this rigid rule that has held for centuries, this year
I have met several people who stated preference for the
pronoun they. It is truly unprecedented that they is undergoing such a transformation!
Although some strict grammarians dont care for it,
language columnist for the Wall Street Journal Ben Zimmer summarized its growth nicely when he wrote, they
symbolizes how mainstream culture has come to recognize and accept transgender and gender fluid people,
some of whom reject traditional pronouns.
The choice for Most Likely to Succeedghost
had a special place in my personal lexicon this year. In
fact, I wonder how I went so long without it. For those
who havent caught up on the new terminology, the verb
ghost means to abruptly end a relationship by cutting off
communication, especially online. I have extended its
use to the physical world (as have many) by accusing
friends of ghosting if they leave a party without warning

LEX
IN THE

CITY
or dont call me back quickly enough, with a, did you
just ghost me? From my perspective, ghost has certainly
earned its title this year.
The winner for Most Unnecessary, manbun, was
quite surprising, and perhaps its growing popularity this
year has surprised WOTY voters. I see it as a crucial
new addition to our lexicon. How else can we describe
the particularly cringe-worthy look of a knot of hair
gathered on a mans head? One of the hidden treasures
of this term is that, whether or not one is describing an
actual guy with a beehive, manbun never fails to cause
gigglesnow thats a mark of success for any word.
The winner of Most Euphemistic, Netflix and chill,
also did quite well this year. In fact, just last week, the
Oregon Department of Transportation issued a mandate
asking residents to Netflix and chill during a recent winter storm. Could this be the new replacement for the traditional stay indoors until storm has passed?
Runners up for Most Euphemistic included swipe
left and swipe right, which stem from the dating site Tinder. When someone swipes right on a photo of a potential suitor, he or she sends the person into the I am
interested category, and a swipe to the left sends the
person off to the dreaded trash. Young people all over the
US are saying things like, I should have swiped left, I
swiped right on him quick! and Oh no! I accidentally

swiped right/left!
Although the Dialect Society didnt award these
terms, I would like to give an honorable mention to the
trailblazers, adult, dad and mom. The new verb adult
refers to the taxing behavior of acting like a grown-up.
The best part is that one doesnt have to actually be an
adult to adult. Complaints from Millennials include
this year I adulted harder than I ever have before and
please dont make me adult todayIm not in the
mood!
Dad has also made its way around the Internet as a
playful address for a man seen as a father figure. One of
the best examples this year was when Bernie Sanders
tweeted college should be free for everyone, which
was followed by a slew of Twitter responses: Dad. It
should be noted that when Hillary Clinton tweeted the
exact same message, she got the response: Establishment Puppet.
My favorite adaptation of a kinship term has been the
new use of the old standby, mom. Some of the most
well-known women to receive this very flattering distinction this year were Beyonc, Taylor Swift and Ruth
Bader Ginsburg. According to a recent New York Times
article on the topic, one doesnt have to be famous to be
a mom. Young girls are now calling their best friends
mom. This is not the 1980s version of the word used disparagingly to suggest that a friend was acting too controlling or, God forbid, wearing mom jeans. No, this is
a cool, hip complimentary mommm. As one teen put it,
In my eyes, it just means when you admire someone so
much that calling them one of your parents is the ultimate complimentbut, like, in a noncreepy way.
Although I dont know whats on the docket for new
expressions of 2017, I guess Ill just put on my mom
jeans (in a noncreepy way) and hope that the Mom love
continues.

SPORTS

Claremont COURIER/Friday, December 30, 2016

CHS sports programs marked by highs and lows

ar and away the biggest sports story from 2016 has to be cross countrys dual State CIF victories, combined with an individual state title for
senior Owen Bishop.
The cross-country program had been getting
stronger for the past few years, but really came together under the tutelage of Coach Bill Reeves, who is
in his second year.
To say this was an amazing accomplishment would
be putting it mildlylast year, the Pack got dual
fourth-place finishes, one spot from a podium appearance. But this year, the girls dominated with just 59
seconds between the fastest and slowest scoring runners. The boys, on the other hand, just squeaked by
second-place Loyola, helped largely by Bishops victory. First place is the fewest points I can score for
the team, Bishop said following the meet.
Claremonts dominance was apparent all year,
sweeping the Palomares League meets and the CIF
prelims and culminating in a CIF Southern Section
Division II victory for the girls, a first for the program.
Senior Annie Boos led the way all season and was the
top finisher for the Pack at both the CIF Southern Section meet and the state meet.
Football had a rather unspectacular 3-7 record in
2016, and would not have ranked as a top story except
for the sudden termination of Coach Jose Coco Jarin
on December 12.
Coach Jarin was in his second year and had made
great efforts to improve the team, including taking on
a tougher schedule this year to make his players
stronger.
The school has not released a statement about the
firing, aside from the letter that was sent to parents announcing the action. However, there has been some
controversy involving the football boosters. Mr. Jarin
was told that a group of parents and some kids were
not happy, but also said his meeting with Principal
Brett OConnor was vague.
Girls volleyball has had its share of turmoil with
five coaches in five years, one of whom quit on the
eve of the CIF tournament. Not to be deterred this
year, under the guidance of Coach Dan Reighter the
girls claimed a Palomares League title and made it all
the way to the semifinals of the Southern Section CIF
Tournament. That accomplishment qualified them for
the CIF State Girls Volleyball Championships, where
they made it to the second round.
Girls golf had its finest season ever, sending all six
varsity players to the Palomares League Finals. They

ended the season tied for third, which is an accomplishment in the very competitive Palomares League.
With just three varsity players graduating and three returning, Coach Octavio Hernandez is optimistic the
Pack will be strong again next year.
The success of the Packs distance runners, of
course, spilled over to victories in track and field.
Boos broke her own school record in the 1600-meter
race during the CIF Southern Section Division II finals at Cerritos College. Her third-place finish at
4:54:65 also guaranteed her a berth in the CIF Masters
event at Cerritos College. Also qualifying for masters
was Ryan Renken, who placed second in the 3200meter race at 9:15:37.
For the first time since 2013, CHS track and field
competed in the state championships, sending three
athletes to the elite competition.
Sophomore Cameron Kading brought home a firstplace trophy in the Paralympic 100-meter sprint,

which was a very proud moment for his coach, Veronica Amarasekara. It was the first time that the state
meet has included Paralympic events, so it was particularly rewarding to get a first place.
Annie Boos ran her second and third fastest times
during the 1600-meter event, good for seventh place.
Ryan Renken got 13th place in a very fast 3200-meter
race. Both Renken and Boos will have one more shot
at the state meet in 2017.
In addition to the distance runners, multi-sport phenom Duy Tran Sampson won both the 100-meter and
the 200-meter race in the Palomares League finals, cementing his berth in the CIF tournament.
It was the end of an era for boys tennis when Andrew Leahy graduated from CHS last year. Along with
his brother Alan, the Leahys had dominated the local
tennis scene for the better part of a decade.
The Pack had a strong year, finishing 8-2 with both
losses to number-one Diamond Bar. Andrew Leahy
lost to his top rival Neil Tengbumroong from Diamond Bar 7-6, 6-2 in the championship game of the
Palomares League finals. He earned the runner up title
and a berth to the individual CIF championships at the
University of Redlands.
Soccer has been a strong program, with both the
boys and girls winning CIF titles in the past few years,
the girls in 2012 and the boys in 2011.
Girls soccer had a good year, placing second in
league, but lost on penalty kicks in the second round
of the CIF tournament to San Luis Obispo. The boys
tied for the league title with Diamond Bar as a result
of both teams winning on the others turf, and were
also eliminated in the second round of the CIF tournament.
Boys water polo were CIF champions two years
ago and were defending league champions going into
the 2016 season. However, this year Ayala proved to
be too much for the Pack and they had to settle for
second place. The boys went to the second round of
the CIF tournament where they lost to Oaks Christian.
Bottom line, it was a pretty good year for Claremont High School with a lot to look forward to in
2017.

Claremonts 2016 arts and entertainment scene

Claremont is an anomaly in a lot of

ways, but one of our most wonderful
quirks is of great benefit to us all: Were
a small town with a big-city art scene.
Where else in the world would a town
of 35,000 have a Pulitzer Prize-winning
writer giving a fascinating lecture while a
Rock and Roll Hall of Famer is electrifying the crowd at a small theater just
down the street?
And while the City of Trees certainly
owes a great debt to the Claremont Colleges largesse and cache in bringing in
top tier entertainment and brainpower,
which we all enjoy, we also have a thriving music, art, poetry and literary scene
happening independent of the Colleges.
This year really drove that point home,
with several major artists making appearances in town.
All flavors of local and international
music are always throbbing at local music venues and even out on the street at
Friday Nights Live. Art galleries and
working collectives dot the Village. Live
theater is available at the Candlelight
Pavilion and Bridges Auditorium and
other venues at the Colleges.
The point is weve an embarrassment
of riches, in per-capita terms. The following is a sampling of 2016s best, most interesting, arts and entertainment events in
and around Claremont.
The eighth annual Claremont Film

Pilgrim Place arranged for journalist
Bill Moyers to give a free talk at UCC in
May.

Festival kicked off in May with Buster

Keatons The General, followed by the
acclaimed musical documentary The
Wrecking Crew.
On May 22 Claremont was lucky to
have one of Americas great journalists,
Bill Moyers, give an electrifying free talk
at United Church of Christ. Mr. Moyers
sat down with the COURIER after the
talk and made the year for two of its reporters. If one needs any more proof of
the citys charmed existence, on that
same day Claremonts own David Lindley headlined the 33rd annual Claremont
Folk Festival at Pomona Colleges Sontag Greek Theater. It was quite a day.
Senator Barbara Boxer visited Claremont in June to give a free talk at Scripps
College. In July, Ophelias Jumps Midsummer Shakespeare Festival kicked off

with A Midsummer Nights Dream and

Othello. Later in July, long-running Los
Angeles psychedelic cowboys I See
Hawks in LA and legendary guitarist
Tony Gilkyson played a wonderful show
at the Folk Music Center.
A tribute to the late Claremont artist
John Svenson was shown in August at
the Square I Gallery. Journalist Melissa
Harris-Perry came to the Garrison Theater. Acclaimed genre-benders Marleys
Ghost played a packed house concert in
Claremont on August 21.
In September, Melanie (Brand New
Key) played an intimate house concert
in Claremont. Pitzer Colleges fascinating ISLAM: Beyond Ideological Narratives series kicked off September 6 with
a talk on Yemeni womens rights.
The first Claremont Authors Book
Faire took place at the Claremont Library
on September 24. The event featured
several local authors, including Allen
Callaci reading his recently-published
memoir Heart Like a Starfish.
October saw concert activity that was
off the charts, even by Claremont standards, with Jackson Browne playing a
sold out show at Bridges to benefit the
Folk Music Center, followed up by Neil
Young and the Promise of the Real at the
Fox in Pomona.
As November dawned, Bridges hosted
Pomona-born comedian, writer, produc-

er, television host and actor Larry

Wilmore, who offered a post-election
discussion. On November 14, Pulitzer
winner Michael A. Hiltzik discussed
Whats Happened to Americas Middle
Class? at the Athenaeum at Claremont
McKenna College. And, on November
20, the Claremont Museum of Art officially opened its doors at the Claremont
Depot with (re)Generation: Six Decades
of Claremont Artists.
More Pulitzers were on display December 9 when three-time winning New
York Times columnist and author Thomas
Friedman spoke at Claremont Graduate
Universitys Albrecht Auditorium.
Other highlights this year include a
gamelan concert, choirs, West African
ensembles, fortepiano and symphony orchestra concerts at the Colleges, Friday
Nights Live, the librarys poetry readings, the University Club of Claremont
discussions and several fascinating programs at Pilgrim Place.
Were truly blessed to have such a varied palette of music, art, film, literature
and theater available to us virtually seven
days a week, a great deal of it free of
charge. Now that you have an idea of
what you missed, be sure to check the
COURIERs Calendar section every Friday to be sure you wont miss anything
in 2017.

the first half of their Palomares League match-up. The teams battled to a 1-1 tie after regulation. Despite several opportunities, neither scored in overtime, notching a tie for both teams.

After much negotiation the college finally got approval

GETTING FIT Well, weve all eaten our

way through the holidays, and now its
time to pay the piper. If your New Years
resolution involved shedding a few of
those post-holiday pounds, Claremont is

full of options for getting started without

a gym membership. Thompson Creek
Trails 2.2 miles of gentle grade is a nice
place to get moving. If youre feeling adventurous, you can take a decidedly
more vigorous approach and scale Potato Mountain (which is really what led you
to need to exercise in the first place, if you
think about it) via Evey Canyon. This
route is five miles of moderate hiking. To
burn off more potatoes, try summiting via
the Loop, which is a tougher climb and at
11 miles takes about five hours. Oh, and
watch for mountain lions.

LEARN TO PLAY If youre good with

your body image, well, good for you.
Maybe your New Years resolution involved expanding your skill set? If so, the

classes in just about any musical instrument you could want to learn, everything
from voice and autoharp to ukulele and
guitar, for kids on up. More info is at claremontmusic.org and folkmusiccenter.com.

WHAT GEOFF'S CLIENTS ARE SAYING . . .

Geoff exceeded our very high expectations in the recent sale of our property in the Claremont Village. We appreciated the
professionalism, courtesy and speed with which he shepherded the process from start to finish, keeping us fully informed throughout. It is
a pleasure to see a master at work in any field and a special pleasure when I am the direct beneficiary!
V. Sathe & S. Sathe
All along the way, from the search, to offer, to escrow, to closing, the process was smooth and painless. We were informed all along the
way of what to expect and when. I cannot recommend Geoff Hamill highly enough. He is a professional who has years of knowledge he
generously shares.
J. Spera & A. Conway
Geoff did an outstanding job selling our property in Upland. His attention to detail was superior. We immediately recommended that our
son list another Upland property with Geoff as a result of our satisfaction with the service provided.
S. Campbell & O. Campbell
Geoff helped me with my recent real estate purchase and was fantastic and professional. To be honest I was a little reluctant to call him
because I thought he only services higher value homes. He didn't care what the value of the home was and he treated it like it was a million
dollar deal and was on top of every step in the process. Geoff probably didn't know it at the time, but I was preoccupied with my father in
and out of the hospital and I didn't have much time to be involved in the transaction. Geoff took care of the whole thing and was a constant
professional! I'm so glad I chose him to be my agent.

AUTHORIZED TO DO BUSINESS IN THIS STATE:
All right, title, and interest conveyed to and now held by
the trustee in the hereinafter described property under and
pursuant to a Deed of Trust described as: More fully described in said Deed of Trust. Street Address or other common designation of real property: 460 Rosemont Ave,
Los Angeles, CA 90026 A.P.N.: 5157-015-001 The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the street address or other common designation,
if any, shown above. The sale will be made, but without

covenant or warranty, expressed or implied, regarding

title, possession, or encumbrances, to pay the remaining
principal sum of the note(s) secured by the Deed of Trust.
The total amount of the unpaid balance of the obligation
secured by the property to be sold and reasonable estimated costs, expenses and advances at the time of the initial publication of the Notice of Sale is:
$ 370,391.21. If the Trustee is unable to convey title
for any reason, the successful bidders sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to
the Trustee, and the successful bidder shall have no
further recourse. The beneficiary of the Deed of Trust
has executed and delivered to the undersigned a written
request to commence foreclosure, and the undersigned
caused a Notice of Default and Election to Sell to be
recorded in the county where the real property is located. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are
considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee
auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does
not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership
of the property. You should also be aware that the lien
being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the

highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being
auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this
property by contacting the county recorders office or a
title insurance company, either of which may charge you
a fee for this information. If you consult either of these
resources, you should be aware that the same lender may
hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. NOTICE OF TRUSTEE'S SALE Note: Because
the Beneficiary reserves the right to bid less than the total debt owed, it is possible that at the time of the sale the
opening bid may be less than the total debt NOTICE TO
PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the
mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to
Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements
be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy
to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether
your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the
rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property,
you may call (866)-960-8299 or visit this Internet Web

site http://www.altisource.com/MortgageServices/DefaultManagement/TrusteeServices.aspx using the file

number assigned to this case 2016-00576-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale
may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to
verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. Western Progressive, LLC, as Trustee for
