Whats the next big thing to hit the London foodie scene?
Londons love of barbecues & burgers, including slow cuts of meat, ribs and pulled pork1 has been hanging over us like the
smoke on our clothes from a summer barbecue for a good two years now. Surely its time for a change of foodie trend in the
finger-on-the-pulse capital? But what next? Here are the three competitive alternatives to that BBQ meat crown:
1. Lobster: We had lobster and burger, but now its time for the shellfish alone to take centre stage. This month in
London there are lobster festivals, lobster offers and specific new lobster items being added to menus all over. The best thing is
that its making what is usually considered as an expensive dinner option more affordable.
One example is the lobster, steak and bubbles2 option from Drake & Morgan restaurants. Here, if you book in advance you can
have a glass of prosecco3, a small steak and half a lobster with either chips or onion rings for 15. Belgos also has Lobster-fest
on until the end of August with some amazing garlic lobster and whole lobster salad options.
2. Gourmet snacks: London is going a bit crazy at the moment for gourmet snacks, these include special popcorn and
large gourmet marshmallows4 and blondies. All are ideal for pop-up cinemas and general outdoor screenings.
If you are wondering what on earth some of these things are I can enlighten you. The gourmet marshmallows and
popcorn are pretty straight forward great popcorn and marshmallows with unusual and connoisseur flavours, both can be
found in Notting Hill. The Marshmallowists have a stand in Portobello on the weekends and other street foodie destinations
when they appear. Their flavours include things like blueberry and Portobello gin and raspberry and champagne.
Pop, also in Notting Hill make popcorn flavours such as peanut butter and jelly and Bloody Mary. The blondie is a
brownie, but made with white chocolate instead of dark a baking goddesses dream to trial. They are not lighter in fat or
sugar, just lighter in colour. Lots of artisan bakeries are offering them up now around our London streets.
3. The new doughnuts: More things from across the Atlantic (I wonder how many of our foodie offerings are popping
up in America at the moment?). Cronuts are a cross between croissants and doughnuts and can be found at Duck & Waffle,
Rinkoff in Whitechapel, and Wild Wood and Coffee in central. They are going down a storm and in many of the places they sell
out as fast as they hit the shelves. This amazingly bad for you, but brilliant for your taste buds treat is definitely having its day.
