History
Anticipating the liberalization of the telecommunications industry in the Philippines in 1992, Smart
(then named Smart Information Technology, Inc.) was organized in January 24, 1991 by a group of Filipino
investors led by Orlando B. Vea and David T. Fernando.
The Company obtained its congressional franchise in April 1992 and was granted a provisional
authority to operate a mobile cellular service in May 1993. In December 1993, Smart commenced
commercial operations of its cellular service.
By then, Smart had drawn in partners. These were: First Pacific, a Hong Kong-based conglomerate
through its Philippine flagship Metro Pacific Investments Corporation and Nippon Telegraph and
Telephone of Japan (NTT).
In compliance with the governments telecommunications program, Smart established a local
exchange service in the cities and provinces assigned to it under the service area scheme. The Company
also obtained licenses to provide international gateway, paging and inter-carrier transmission services. [5]
On March 24, 2000, PLDT completed its share-swap acquisition of Smart, making Smart a 100%-owned
PLDT subsidiary. Smart Communications became a member of Conexus Mobile Alliance for international
roaming since December 2006.

D. Reference Materials

On our first day, we were assigned on different areas; I was assigned in Luzon Area. I met
my supervisors and the whole team. And on that day, they give me a temporary workplace and let me
borrowed used laptop that is previously owned by an old employee. This laptop will be my thing where I can
do all the task they will give to me like excels, PowerPoint, updating and monitoring files and other things.
They also give us files (power points and pdf) that serve as lectures while staying as an intern. These files
are lectures that we should study to understand what they are doing and to do my job well

While in field work, the equipments and materials they use gave me knowledge when it
comes to field works. It is really good to know how this equipment works even though they are difficult to
understand if you really have no idea and how the process goes. I learn a lot of thing from them. I am
thankful for giving me this privilege to experience these awesome things I did as an intern.

Personal Evaluation in the Training Program

A. Professional Learning and Development Achieve

After many days of preparation for the documents and seminars I attended, all my hard
work just to finish all the requirements needed just to start my internship, I finally started my internship
last 14 of April 2015 at SMART Communication Inc., located at 6799 Ayala Ave., Makati City, Metro Manila.
I consumed 1 hour to fall in line in the terminal and another 45miins before I arrived in office. This things
make me feel that I really need to managed my time in order to be a punctuate person and be responsible
person, by this small thing that you didnt notice in everyday of your life it may be a big factor leads to
professionalism. I think choosing SMART Communication Inc. is the best choice to conduct my internship
because SMART OJT program provides experience being in SMART community, exposure to your chosen
field and the opportunity to work with professionals who share the same passion.

Professionalism is defined as "the conduct, aims, or qualities that characterize or mark a

profession or a professional person"; and it defines a profession as "a calling requiring specialized
knowledge and often long and intensive academic preparation." Professionals are the kind of
people that others give respect and value. They are a genuine credit to their organizations. This is
why it is important that we work to earn a professional reputation in the workplace. True
professionals are the first to be considered for promotions, they are awarded valuable projects or
clients, and they are routinely successful in their careers.

In this company you will learn the essence of discipline, like for example if youre already a
working as a regular employee, if the situation is like you are always late on the call time of the company,
will you be able to have good record in your time card? Will you be able to produce high quality works? Will
you be able to do work without procrastinating? Will you be able to maintain your job with you? Probably
the answer would be no, because once you are called a professional, you are also a known person to have
discipline in your own self. Because if you know your responsibilities then thats the time you will have
discipline. Like for example in SMART Communication Inc., Engr. Ronald Dela Cruz always assures that
the paper works should be perfect and free from any errors because if there is even just one the re will be a
lot of error that might happen in the implementation stage of the project.

I have learned the importance of attendance and promptness along with other work ethics
that go hand-in-hand with securing and keeping a job. I also developed an appreciation and respect for
work that whatever your position is, it is still a decent work. As a student, I have observed the opportunity
of employees to obtain gainful employment leading to enhanced career opportunities and economic
responsibility, submitting correctly and completed required paperwork on time and the most challenging
part is dealing with other people especially if you are a new employee.

A. Modern Techniques, Skills and Tools Used/Learned

Nowadays, many company used technology to make things easily and it really help them
to improve their business. Like SMART, theyre using modern techniques, skills and tools to make works
easier. Network diagrams, path calculations, link planning, and frequency planning are the heart of wireless
transmission, here at SMART instead of manually checking and computing the distance between two sites,
frequency, path length, free space loss, Tx power, Rx signal, fade margin, etc., a software is used, that
software is called pathloss. The Pathloss program is a comprehensive path design tool for radio links
operating in the frequency range from 30 MHz to 100 GHz. It consists of different modules.

These modules are the following; Summary Module feature of this software it provides a
central location for the entry of path data parameters. Path calculations are carried out down to the receive
signal level. The worksheet module completes the propagation reliability analysis. Some items such as the
site names and call signs can only be entered in this module. In the terrain module, this is consists of a
table of distance and elevations between the two sites. In the antenna height module, the antenna heights
can be varied in any combination or the heights can be optimized based on the minimum value of the sum
of the squares of the antenna heights. In the worksheet module, it feature the complete transmission
analysis is carried out in the Microwave Worksheet module. The data entry forms are accessed by clicking
on an equipment icon. The worksheet is calculated and the results are displayed as the data entry
proceeds.

SID or Site Information Database is a database where all information they need is all found
there. It is a private file which is exclusive only for SMART employee especially at wireless network
department. It is where all you need to know about the existing site or even whether you need expand the
capacity of the bandwidth. This database is vital because you can access all important files even those files
years ago.

The following are the screen shot of this software.

A. Equipment, Machinery, Testing Apparatus, etc., Handheld

Technologies were also one of the most important tools for planning and designing which
would provide the company save time and produce works with ease and accuracy. Such materials were
used also in order to be more convenient and sufficient with energy usage of the workers for the working
loads in the company. Microwave radio utilizes air waves as a transmission medium. Microwave links carry
thousands of voice channels but it is low to medium capacity, it has low initial investment particularly on
medium capacity, short repair time and service interruption and it has short implementation time

Copper cables are the common medium of transmission using metallic wire because of its
cheaper but in other hand it is low capacity, vulnerable to route damage, noise and attenuations, it is long
service interruptions and it has limited availability and expansion. While fiber optic cables it utilizes optical
waveguides and light sources to propagate signals. A dielectric waveguide used for the propagation of
electromagnetic energy at optical frequencies fiber optic cables are high capacity, it has high initial
investment, vulnerable to route damage and long service interruption.

Computers were one of the equipment used for the network diagram and path calculations,
presentations, and for other project that requires important documents. It is also used to send files in order
to communicate and send files even not in front of the clients. Other equipment s were seen also in
constructions which provide workers an accurate work in order to give satisfaction to the designer and the
client.

A. Experiences with the Company Personnel Involved in the Training

Socialization is one of the most important factor which helps to the professional
development of an individual. If a certain person can communicate and interact well with his surrounding
therefore miscommunication with workers would be avoided. One of the TIPs graduate attribute is
interpersonal skills in which means work effectively in multi-disciplinary and multicultural teams.

With this, the staffs and workers work together in unity in order to provide unity and good
communication in the company. Through this during our stay in the firm we look forward to this part that we
will be able to interact well with the staffs and workers. At first it doesnt feel comfortable to do the training
because we were all first time in the field of work that is being done their but as days go by, we can see
ourselves treated with kindness and at the same time as professionals wherein during leisure time with
staff, we communicate like friends or in casual way, even engineers shows respect even to us trainees
which indeed is a good thing in here because we were also treated like real professionals which shows
discipline and provides personal development that we will be using in the near future.

A. Best Practices Used/Applied

During the internship, each of us is assigned to different areas; where I was assigned in
the Luzon area which I see that it helps the company to be organized and do works correctly and orderly.
The company specifies what activities will be done such as pathloss, frequency assignment, updating vital
files, site works and even the preparation of documents, bills materials for the execution of the project and
files that are needed to issue of what the site equipments needed.

The best practices that Ive ever experienced in this company were the activities like play
more, love more, and live more, updating and monitoring turbo for 3G bandwidth of South Luzon which is
only transmission engineers can say what should be written in the file depending on what they are now
doing in specific site/area, frequency assignment for microwave communication for South Luzon area and
the field works and the preparation of materials for the execution of the project. In site works we do a lot of
things such as installing Fiber Optic Cables, checking for the line of sight and data gathering between two
sites. These were the best practices that Ive ever experienced in my OJT Training.

A. Discipline Related Solutions Integrated into the Company

SMART company have its very own core value that employee conducted not only to
improve the company business but also to valued their employees to loved their work and happy doing it;
be customer inspired, dream and create, lead and transform, win together, make a difference are the best
discipline related solutions integrated into the company. Being customer inspired means giving importance
to the customer and coping up to the general need of their customers through constant innovation in
wireless services, no wonder SMART is the leading wireless service provider in the Philippines with of
over 53.5 million subscribers on its GSM. Another is the dream and create, with SMART ideas does not
remain ideas they are implemented. Lead and transform, win together and make a difference these three
will sum it up because if you choose the best network, SMART, you are empowered to live more the make
the most out of your life, SMART enable you to create awesome moments in life through mobile and digital
innovations.

A. Strong Points

The strong point of the company is reflected to their vision and mission A world where
everyone is empowered to live more, We enable you to create awesome moments in life through mobile
and digital innovations. SMART always prioritize customers before anybody else. The SMART OJT
program provides experience being in SMART community, exposure to your chosen field and the
opportunity to work with professionals who share the same passion. The company, its employees and staff
strive to promote a culture of good corporate governance by observing and maintaining our core business
principles of accountability, integrity, fairness and transparency in our relationships among ourselves and
with our customers, suppliers, competitors, business partners, regulators, and the public.

The company has its welcoming and overwhelming approach not just with the workers and
staffs but also with the OJT Trainees. Communication was never been a problem to the company because
they interact with each other well, wherein if there is any conflict with the other staffs or workers they talk
about it immediately to be able to have a good conversation and to end the conflict. Engineers at SMART
share their knowledge to us interns without hesitations for us to grow on our chosen field, for me that was
their strongest point.

A. Weak Points and Suggested Solutions

A company doesnt always have the strong points, in every company there are always
trials that challenges and weak points. The only week points that I encounter during my internship in
SMART is that we go to field minimal times only which it limit us to explore more things they actually doing.
Do more hands-on and know more technical part of it, but overall SMART offers a one of a kind internship
experience that greatly improve my knowledge in wireless communication. The opportunity to work with
professionals who share your passion is a big plus points for me.

Availability and Appropriateness of Facilities, Equipment, and Machinery

The OJT has been a bridge to enhance my skills in communication, familiarization

of equipment in industry, and technical activities that makes it a plus point the sooner I landed a job
and help lessen the innocence in dealing with different apparatuses or machinery and specialized
people of their expertise. The facilities are good enough for workplace while equipments and
machineries are awesome to work with, knowing how to handle them well and use it in right way.
People behind all of these are very accommodating. Different technology they are using gives me
knowledge in using them as a beginner.

Company Personnel Cooperation

I would say that the company personnel are very approachable and concern with
the safety/condition of their interns. Sometimes when we have our spare time, we have
conversations regarding lifestyle as an electronics engineer, things they are doing in life, the life
they have after schooling and even goals in life. They also give me piece of advice what should I
do while Im still studying for me to have a bright future and preparation in working in industry.
Bonding time with the team often happen due to busy schedule and lots of work they need to finish.

I also observe the support of each individual as a team, they tend to help each
other to accomplish their goal and without hesitation, they also find time to help me in their own
little way by assigning each of them what they need to discuss lesson to me and enlightening me
with their knowledge and experience as I question and observe the production area. They also
answer my curiosities and concern about the things I never imagine to not knowing about life and
its whole.

B. Duration of Training

I can say that the duration of training is quite too short to know all the
things about the company and to apply all those knowledge and skills in industry. As recommended
by the school, it will take 240 hours to finish the training. I started as much as possible to
accommodate this hours in time but I guess 1 month is limited to finish all the hour so we used to do
over time just to finish all 240 hours in time. I take up this subject in my summer semester because it
is advisable to take it in summer and for my upcoming thesis topic where it would be the basis of my
study in my experience as an intern. The hours Ive stayed here is too short because of the deadline
that Engr. Rommel Anacan amended before the deadline but it is enough to say that I accommodate
the hours needed for my OJT in time. I know that 240 hours is not enough to fully understand the real
situation in working in real world but I am sure that I can cope up easily and be flexible to whatever
my future job will be. I am grateful that I will be entering a new chapter in my life after OJT and
graduation. I am excited on what will happen next

C. Suggestion for Improvement of the Training Program

Not all of us are lucky to go to the desired company where they can experience
what they should be in preparedness working in industry. Some are hired just to do some sort of
stuff or worst when theyre tasked to do things which are not totally related to their course. It
became worst in the sense that they will never get the chance to grow, to explore and discover
themselves, and to gain experiences which will serve as their guidance in stepping into the real
world. The training ground that was expected to prepare them for the future became a burden for
their development. Everything that we do must develop our potential and allow us to reach our
objectives. By accomplishing every task with all our hearts and having the initiative to strive harder
to learn and seek for more.

I dont see lots of area of improvement since my workplace in Smart is really

awesome to work on. But for the sake of other interns, the company should provide a room or
workplace for interns to be able to study the software they used in operating their work and other
aspects in their company. Recommending a task for interns should be applied so that the
knowledge they learn in their course will not be wasted on the OJT and not just a random workrelated agenda, where interns never happen to apply what they learn in the academe.

D. Advice to Future On-the-Job Trainees

Piece of advice to future On-the-Job Trainees first prepare the entire requirement
you will be needed in taking this internship. Make sure also that when you do these things, have
your final company that you will work on so you dont have any problem and be ready. Or if they
want to explore different companies they can make an organized plan or list of companies they
want to visit and prepare their curriculum vitae. They should promote and maintain the good moral
character and values gained from our school. The mission of the school must be maintain like; to
have an industry-desired values of positive work attitude, having a good communicational skills,
proficiency in all aspects of hardware or software equipments that pertains to our fields of study,
having initiative and kind, and the openness to keep on learning to reinvent ourselves into adaptive
citizen of our country and society. Learning how to deal with other people properly and with respect
is also essential tool in our growth. Be an active listener to others, focus in every task you do, be
confident and made mistakes so that you may learn from it and not put you down. Just enjoy your
stay in the company and enhance your ability in training and program for that will benefit your
future as an Electronics Engineer someday. These and all are the perceptions that my OJT
experience has construed in my mallet of judgment. During those 240 hours or more of frustrating
task, and repetitive filing routine, I was indulged to a series of tests aimed to measure my capacity
both physically and mentality. This journal of my exactly 28days work Internship has provided me
with more than enough insights, memories, principles and experiences which will prove to be very
useful in my future career undertaking.

Student Philosophy

My Philosophy of being a Electronics Engineering Student

Being an Electronics Engineering student for me is a great opportunity. Each of us wants to be one
of the best students in the field that we have chosen. As a student of this program I knew that this is one of
the hardest and I believed that if I will finish and surpass this program and be a licensed electronics
engineer, greater opportunities are waiting for me. Since this program covers different areas such as
semiconductor, telecommunication, broadcasting, education, navigation, even working as an IT, etc. more
jobs will be available for me also we are flexible in different area in industry.

To prepare employees to undertake different jobs in order to enable redeployment and

maintain flexibility in workforce so that ever changing environment of market can be met and downturn can
be managed without losing experienced employees and prepare us for our future dilemma in the real world
of employment. To provide employees job satisfaction, training enables an employee to use their skill,
knowledge and ability to fullest extent and thus experience job satisfaction and gain monetary benefits from
enhanced productivity.

My Philosophy of being an Electronics Engineering student is I will persevere until I

succeed Internship is more than what it means. Its the set of training, learning and the most important
ingredients of all, the experience. Just like what a famous quote says, Experience is the best teacher. And
nothing compares to the knowledge that it can give to us. It may be hard at first, but once we learn to
appreciate and love what were doing, it became easier and easier every day.

Being a student we do many projects, activities and meeting deadlines making us to plan
and manage well our schedules effectively. We need to have the discipline in terms of time. I also believe
that even the word attitude is just a simple word and it means a lot of important values because attitude is
everything. And with that, it will help us to improve more and focus in everything that I do. At the end of all
good things that we did, and as long as we are passionate of what we are doing, we will able to be a
successful electronics engineers.

Success Stories and Testimonials

As a trainee, I gained the trust of the superiors through hard work and perseverance to
work, leading to their recommendation to be appointed to their department. Parts of this success are all the
knowledge they shared to me such as a Fundamental of Transmission Line since their department focuses
on transporting and supporting all services to one point to another this lesson has the largest contribution to
my knowledge, a bit introduction of how to design a microwave radio, components/equipments needed in
building a new site even considering its environment where to build like having Line of Sight (LOS),
frequency that are able to used, the capacity of radio and the services they are working on. The basic
lessons that need to learn about the transmission lines and fiber optic cables that really help in doing field
works and other operations as an engineer.

Despite all the hardships that almost hindered the trainee still, the required OJT hours has
been complied. Throughout the training program, I can tell to all readers that it was great and meaningful
experience to be in SMART Communication, Inc. As my co trainees were assigned in different areas, the
company provides a good quality of training not just by looking at their working environment but you can
see that all employees gives their best shot in their respective work . I would say that my experience here
may benefit myself improvement working in industry world. We are being oriented by the rules and
regulations of the company, its vision and mission, the service they provide and, the culture of the company
being diverted into different parts of the country and becoming one as a whole stronghold for interaction
and communication between each branch. They also discuss the punctuality of each individual, being
responsible, managing time, promptness and constant in what you at work because this reflects the way
you confront with the difficulties in life. Over all, this internship is a good start for me to prove my attitude
towards work and willingness to accomplish task on time and quick.

Self-Assessment and Improvement (Week 1 April 14-April 17, 2015)

In this week, it stated with company orientation together with the other trainees discussing
about the some company background and we also play a game not just to have fun but also to meet new
friends. The next day is the start of our training, assigning us in different areas and supervisors; I was
assign to Luzon area. At first, I was shy because I was sitting between my 2 busy supervisor and doing
nothing, but later on they call a short meeting and let me joined them and introduce themselves, so am I.
After that they give me a small space between their tables and let me borrowed laptop and give me a slide
of lecture for me to understand what this department working on and all about. I read about fundamentals
of transmission, how it works and they discuss a bit what do engineers in that department do

Reading more about microwave radio was I do the other day. They also taught me what is
frequency planning is all about. It is setting designated frequency in a site and its not just placing
frequency, you should consider other site around it and the 90 degree rule where if it exceeds 90degrees
then you can use the same frequency as before you used for it not to overlap or interfere the other radio.
Because, the SMART is only allowed to use frequency they rented to NTC.

They also used Google earth to see the existing site in different location in the Philippines
and also to know where to establish a new site. By establishing new site they not just establish new site
and put new radio but also considering if its opposite site can see each other by using their application
called Path loss. This application can see if theres an obstacle between two sites and if there is an LOS
(Line of Sight); LOS is the most important factor to be consider. Its just an graphical representation of your
design, you can adjust the height of the antenna, even its frequency and so on.

Self-Assessment and Improvement (Week 2 April 20-April 24, 2015)

In this week, being trainee is getting started. They started giving me tasks to work out.
They make me to do PPP (Permit to Purchase Permit), in this task Im using PowerPoint and its a
documents completion where NTC requires for new Microwave Radio. Its all about designing one site
which will be the origin with many hops that are linked to it, with complete detail about each site; site name
facing its radio to the origin site, its frequency, latitude and longitude, the type of radio that is existing in that
site and even its azimuth. A hop means 1 pair of site. It is connected with the frequency planning I said
before. They are doing many PPP so they can see easily those site with radios that are facing to each other
and see if they need to adjust the frequencies or not. I make a PPP of Bulacan Area and Oriental Mindoro,
also frequency planning in Oriental Mindoro

The other day, Engr. Ronald Dela Cruz, supervisor of South Luzon taught me how
designing microwave is done and how it work. He taught me how transmission process goes. By the help of
the slide that he gave me, it really help me to understand all he is saying since Im not taking subject that
are related to this works. While the supervisor of North Luzon shown me the network diagram of entire
area. It shows here all the sites link to each other with details saying what types of radio has been installed
in each site and what type of services they are giving.

Since they are working inside the office, majority of the works there are related to Microsoft
thing that can easily monitor and update their work outside and even its equipments. He gave me an excel
work which is to update and monitor the existing equipments in each site. Whether what type of link the site
is; it can be a Backbone Link, Intermediate Link or Last Mile Link. And doing service provisioning what I

also do via WO (Work Order) issuance. This WO is engineers everyday issuing and my job is to monitor
and update those things so that my supervisor and senior supervisor will lessen their works and dont have
a hard time in this thing.

Self-Assessment and Improvement (Week 3 April 27 April 30, 2015)

This week, another excels work my supervisor gave to me. He gave me an excel work
which is updating of the South Luzon 3G rollout monitoring. This will be the primary task assigned to me
since this task is critical because of decision making whether the proposed projects or solution per site is
based on this file. And my work is all about Bandwidth updating that been proposed by the engineers per
area. Since I was working out this updating, I need the database as my source, they have this own site
called SID stands for Site Information Database. In this site all you need about the site are all there, also
only wireless network department can access to that database. In this database also engineers issue their
WO and CAO in TFRF (Transmission Facility Request Form). TFRF is a section where they create a
request depending of what is the need on the site then it will be placed on the files where it is shared in the
entire department so everyone can see. CAO are issue by engineers to see what they going to do in the
site, e.g. expanding or rollout of its services (2G, 3G, LTE, Bro, WiMax), or even changing its bandwidth
capacity.

There are times that they will give us lecture so we can understand more about what they
are doing and even if a new task are given, lecture comes first. My supervisor taught me about Fiber
Cables and some basic matter of it. Using fiber cable is more okay than UTP because of its high capacity,
vulnerable to route damage and long service interruption. Also, Fiber Optics have many advantage over
copper like it has a large bandwidth, longer distances without repeaters, immunity to crosstalk, immunity to
static interference or electrical noise, reference to environment extremes, fiber is more safer and easier to
install, fiber is more secured than UTP, it is lightweight and low cost.

There are times when engineers need to go site visit, they will invite us to accompany
them for us to know the things they do or visit in sites or database and what are actually Electronics
Engineers are doing in industry. We joined them in Data Testing between two sites, this is done for them to
know if the things there are doing in office is actually working in real time. We used equipment in site A
called Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) where it is connected to the multiplexer of the ODU and
it will see in Site B if it is working by determining if it could see each other by means of Microwave Radio of
the two sites. Since the engineer that we joined is like most new in the company, He manage to taught us
what, how and why is data testing is all about, thou he didnt able to explained to us clearly but its okay.

Self-Assessment and Improvement (Week 4 May 4 May 8, 2015)

This week, I always do the updating of South Luzon 3G Rollout monitoring since everyday
transport engineers always issued WO and CAO where the bandwidth of the sites are whether
decreasing or maximizing its capacity. Since I was assigned in Luzon Area, my task is focused on
what Luzon Area assigned to me but there comes a time even the other area give us works due to
the papers that need to finish before it deadline strikes. Metro Manila Area gives me a work where I
need to compile the Path Profile, Path Calculation, Link Budget and the Location using Google
Earth of the sites in one file. This are the details that are need to know in one site and then it will
pass to NTC to inform them.

Engr. Ryan Valenzuela, engineer assigned to Laguna Area give me another work called
Radio BOQ (Bill of Quantity) but its not that hard to do, Im just plotting those site and its facing
sites. I also have resources in excel where all the details in laguna sites are there. Also Engr.
Ronald Dela Cruz give me a task Huawei Microwave Radio for Tower Deloading where I need to
determined the radio links details in sites, identifying old radio existing and determining the
diameter of the radio in the sites. This is done to determine what are the old radio that still exist that
are need to alter into new one.

We joined another field work in PLDT Pasig and PLDT Antipolo. We do patching of fiber
optics in the BSC of the sites. At first Im expecting this will be an easy things but I guess not what
all you expected is right. Patching of fiber cable is somehow easy but the twist here the cables are
too fragile, you dont need to bend the cable because the glass inside the cable might crack and
cause not able to use it and it will be worthless. Also you need to put it in the top portion of the
room where it is safer and right place to put, may not cause disturbance to other who will work in
the area. Around that room are different equipments installed; Base Station Controller (BSC), Radio
Network Controller (RNC), Multiplexer, different modules for transmitter and receiver, equipment for
fiber cables and even the stranded wire capable of supporting different services like E1, STM-1
and FE (Fast Ethernet).

Self-Assessment and Improvement (Week 5 May 11 May 15, 2015)

This week, another excels work my supervisor gave to me. He gave me an excel work
which is updating of the South Luzon 3G rollout monitoring. This will be the primary task assigned to me
since this task is critical because of decision making whether the proposed projects or solution per site is
based on this file. And my work is all about Bandwidth updating that been proposed by the engineers per

capacity.

As I was said earlier, they will give us different lecture about the things we need to know in
the company and also there are some new employee that are need to teach in able to do things right and of
course they are already electronics engineers. They taught us additional information about fiber optics, the
block diagram of the fiber optic transmission system. Just like in block diagram of the communication it has
a transmitter, medium and receiver that stages that electronic signals needed to undergo to. For fiber optic
multiplexer comes first then a light source is needed like LED or Laser and then connected to ODF
(Outdoor Frame) where in other side fiber optic cables are connected the transfer to photodiode as detector
and last is the demultiplexer and connected to its designated destination. Also they discussed to us the
benefits and limitation of using Fiber Optic Cables (FOC) and its different applications. Fiber Switch is used
mostly because it has unlimited usage of ports. They discussed also to us the different kinds of Fiber
Switch. There comes a time when I ask randomly to my supervisor like what is the different between Project
Uno and Project Turbo that I always hear from them. Project Uno is for 2G services only while Project
Turbo is for 3G services. All about the services that need to work out are in this project like for example,
expansion of the capacity of the services depending on the bandwidth of the site and migration2. Also
services has its own destination; 2G are for BSC, 3G are for RNC, WiMax are for ASN, Bro are for Routers
and LTE/4G are for Fast Ethernet.

Self-Assessment and Improvement (Week 6 May 18 May 22, 2015)

For the last week, I finished my work in updating of South Luzon 3G Rollout Monitoring
before my practicum ended. But before I leave the company new employees came and assigned
different area. One is assigned in our area and my supervisor assigned me that Im the one who
will teach the new employee for she will the one who will continue my work. Another lecture is
taught to us, How to use Map Info. It is the same as using Google earth but in this case map info is
more complicated to use and more detail to use. Map Info is software that uses to see the existing
sites and its other details. For me, I can compare it to Adobe Photoshop. Just like in Photoshop it
uses many layers. But not all engineers there are using Map Info thou its very good to use but its
complicated and time consuming.

Field work is good because we actually see and touch that equipment they are using. And
for the last time another field work are given to us, patching of Fiber Optic Cables in PLDT Antipolo
and PLDT Cainta. We patch fiber cable in BSC to Router. Also, SMART give all OJT a tour in Base
Camp in QC. Base Camp handles by ICON, a subsidiary of SMART. Base Camp is a place where
they help their contact center agents become better service ambassadors for Smarts 50 Million
subscribers. The 400-square meter facility called Base Camp houses more than 100 instructional videos,
simulators, games, and other learning assets that equip agents with the knowledge they need to address
the needs of hotline callers. Base Camp is located in the main office of ICONtacts Corp. (ICON), Smarts
contact center subsidiary, in Quezon City. The hub features themed camp sites (Park, Beach, Home,

Battle), where ICON employees can use Smarts mobile broadband devices, as well as the latest
tablets and mobile phones in the market. Also found inside the Base Camp is a 24/7 network monitoring
system called the Command Center, where eight 46-inch LCD screens display real-time status of call traffic,
availability of agents, and average response time in several contact centers in Metro Manila and Visayas.

The Command Center helps them to ensure stable call center operations, and helps guarantee a
robust telephony for Smarts customer service hotline. It enables them to raise the level of
customer service in the industry.
