FIELD WORK NO. 3

TAPING ON SLOPING GROUND
OBJECTIVES:
1. To develop the skills in determining the horizontal distance of
a sloping ground by breaking the tape method up and down
the slope.
2. To acquire the skills in determining the horizontal distance of
a sloping groundby using the tape and abney hand level
3. To to apply the value of excellence and patience in
measuring the slope of the ground.

A range pole, which
may also be called a
lining pole, is a pole
painted with
alternating stripes of
different colors in
consistent widths
used often to site
measurements. The
tool may be a
common one for
surveyors, where
the colors for the
stripes are usually
red and white or red

is a soft, white,
porous sedimentary
rock, a form of
limestone composed
of the mineral
calcite. This is used
in marking
measurements on
ground.
A plumb bob is a
tool used to ensure
that a building
structure like a door
frame or a shelving
support is as vertical
as possible. It is also
used to measure if
an object is placed
directly under a
point above it, such
as placing a shower

A tape measure or
measuring tape is a
flexible form of ruler.
It consists of a
ribbon of cloth,
plastic, fiber glass,
or metal strip with
linear-measurement
markings. It is a
common measuring
tool. Its flexibility
allows for a measure
of great length to be
easily carried in
pocket or toolkit and
permits one to
measure around
curves or corners.
Today it is
ubiquitous, even
appearing in
miniature form as a
keychain fob, or
novelty item.
Surveyors use tape
measures in lengths
of over 100 m
(300+ ft).

PROCEDURE:
A) Breaking the tape method
1. The professor assigns two points on a sloping ground to be
measured by the students and marks the lower point
down the hill as A and up hill as B.
2. Set or hold range poles behind the point Aand B or outside
the course AB. These poles will aid the students to travel
in a straight path. Front taperman holds the reeled out
tape while the 0-mark elevated by about a breast high is
held by near taperman directly over point A with the use
of the plumb bob.
3. Front taperman aligns himself along the course AB with
the aid direction given by the rear tapeman. The front
tapeman while holding the end of the tape pulls the tape
to make it horizontal.
4. A 10-meter tape is stretched out on the ground on the
straight path along A to B where the 0-end is held ahead.
The rear tape man is responsible for giving the signal to
the front tape man if his path is straight. While the front
tapeman is responsible to pull the tape taut once the tape
is aligned already.
5. The rear tapeman leaves point A and moves up the slope
to the pin previously driven by the fronttapeman.
6. Repeat procedures 3 and 4.
7. The last partial tape length is measured if possible with
the 0-mark of the tape now held at B. All data must be
carefully recorded on the computation sheet provided.
8. Reverse the process and measure the slope downwards

COMPUTATIONS:
PRINCIPLE

[TAPING ON SLOPING GROUND]

There are several ways that we can measure the horizontal

distance of the sloping ground. It can be accomplished by
breaking the tape method, both in going up to its slope and down
to its slope. A horizontal line of sight is established if the bubble is
centered while sigthing through the tube. This device is simply a
level adopted for measuring vertical angles. Vertical aide is acted
on where angles are read. It gives the value and the slope in
terms of arc measure.

QUESTIONS and PROBLEMS

1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using the
breaking the tape method in measuring horizontal distance
of a sloping terrain.
Advantages of the breaking the tape method are; first,
easiest and simplest way of measuring slopes. Second
breaking the tape method is more accurate and precise. And
also breaking the tape method depends on the positioning
of the tape, so the more the tape is precise the more
accurate measurement there is.Disadvantages are, if the
tape is not horizontal and if the plum bobs are not aligned
maybe there will be a slight error in the measurement. And
also the measure depends on the experience of the person
who are measuring it.

2. Give Other Methods of determining the horizontal

distancebetween two points
First you can use abney hand level Hand Levels can be a
great tool for use by professionals and consumers. They are
a very practical and low cost tool with a wide variety of
uses. They were first created when someone thought of

[TAPING ON SLOPING GROUND]

attaching a spirit level to a telescope. Once the instrument

is level, the user looks through the telescope to compare
different points against the same reference point. It is used
for rough leveling and not designed for precision work.
Second; use Chaining over sloping ground When you are
measuring on ground with a slope greater than 5 percent
,you will need to use the measuring line differently to find
the horizontal distances.Proceed as described in the
previous section. Mark the straight lines with ranging poles
at each end and intermediate pegs. Remember to work
downhill for greater accuracy. The head chainman should
hold the measuring line horizontal, above the ground, in this
case. And lastly you can also use the trigonometric
properties such as Pythagorean theorem. By getting the
height and the distance of the slope.

CONCLUSION
Based on my own observation to get more accurate
results you need to measure the slope slowly and
carefully to obtain better results. You may also measure
along the ground on a slope. But to obtain horizontal
distances, you will need to correct these ground
measurements afterwards by using correct mathematical
formulas . As an additional information we must also
apply the value of patience in making the task because
the location is outside so expect extreme heat or rain. We
need to be patient and follow all the procedures carefully
to make the measurement accurate.
