Papers
Smooth white computer paper (80-120 gsm)
Smooth Bristol board. I demonstrate with Sennelier Bristol board 224 g.
Saunders Waterford watercolour paper (NOT which can also be called cold pressed)
in 300 lb weight
The paper can be thinner (140 lb) for sketches but if you use heavy washes it can
buckle if the watercolour paper hasn't been previously stretched. You can pre-stretch
your watercolour paper. Here is a demo: how to stretch watercolour paper.
If you don't want to stretch the paper, then using a 300 lb watercolour paper is the
answer, but with the paper being double the thickness it's often double the price.
So it's a choice between the time and price to pre-stretch your own paper or paying for
a more expensive paper without having to stretch it.
(Arches is also a nice brand of watercolour paper.)
Sketchpads
I use a small cartridge paper sketchbook (11 x 15 cm) from Seawhite of Brighton and
the larger landscape book is a 13 x 21 cm landscape, watercolour Moleskine
sketchbook.
The Moleskine is fab for watercolour sketches and folds out really flat for wide
panoramas.
For drawing pads that have thicker/heavier weight pages, the Stirin and Birg
watercolour pads are great. They have 270-gm pages so you can work in heavier
washes without the paper buckling.
Frames
Card Viewfinder Frame, Two Sizes
The outside edge of the frame isnt as important.
I often go for a size around A4 (UK size) or 8 x 10 inches approx.
Larger size frame has a 7.5 x 5.5 inch hole cut out. Smaller size frame has a 6 x 4
inch hole cut out
Drawing Materials
Drawing pencil HB
Drawing pencil 2B
Mechanical pencil HB
A note on drawing pencils: When youre first starting out, try and buy a reputable
brand such as Staedtler Mars Lumograph, Faber-Castell 9000 pencils, or Derwent
graphic pencils.
In the course I demonstrate with Cretacolor pencils.
Pencil Sharpener
When sharpening pencils I use a Stanley knife because you can get an extremely
fine, sharp point and you can sharpen it so theres more pencil lead exposed.
If you have an aversion to using a Stanley knife or blade, then a standard pencil
sharpener will do the job just fine.
Kneaded/Putty Eraser
Faber-Castel putty eraser. Winsor & Newton also make nice putty erasers.
Kitchen Roll
Paper towel for blotting the watercolour
Paper Clips
For clipping down drawing pads when on location, and for dropping pens/ brushes
into when sketching. I use a large size, but smaller sizes work well for smaller
sketches.
