A.

LOADING

Due to the wide and ever-changing variety of equipment that may be processed in the Model 520
pasteurizer, the following tips are intended as a general guide. The basket can be loaded with all tubing;
all layers of parts; or with only a layer divider as a lid if very large devices are to be reprocessed. Bottles
and jars or other open-ended items should be placed flat to allow parts to drain. Bladders or bags should
lie flat in thin layers using a layer divider to hold mouths pointing out for best results. Please contact
Sales at 253-395-2400 or 800-426-1042 if you have questions about reprocessing specific equipment.
NOTE: The basket only needs to be removed for: 1) cleaning the tank; 2) checking and cleaning the
drain screen; 3) troubleshooting and other corrective measures; 4) routine maintenance in conjunction
with a Preventive Maintenance Kit.
Load equipment with the basket already in position in Tank 1. To load the Model 520:
1. If pasteurizing very heavily soiled item, some rinsing may be desired.
2. Disassemble the devices to be processed into their smallest component parts.
3. Place tubing on the bottom or on the first layer of the basket for optimum cleaning (see Figure 3
below).
4. Place a layer divider down into the basket until it rests on the equipment below (do not force it down),
and lock into position.
NOTE: Loose devices should be placed in mesh bags to prevent loss or damage from devices rubbing
against each other.
5. Place additional equipment or tubing on this first layer divider. Utilize the compartment dividers to
keep devices from moving from side to side (see Figure 4 below).
6. Repeat the loading and layering process, loading evenly from side to side in each layer. Bottles and
jars or other open-ended items should be placed flat to allow parts to drain. Bladders or bags should
lie flat in thin layers using a layer divider to hold mouths pointing out for best results.
7. Place a final layer divider in the basket and lock into place as a lid. This lid must be in place before
starting operation to keep the devices submerged (see Figure 5 below).
8. The center round compartment of the basket may be loaded with mesh bags containing small, fragile
parts. Snap the wire lid into place to keep the devices submerged.

HS SLSMAN 01 Rev.W

Controlled

9. Pour the Clean 505 liquid or powdered cleaning agent over the top layer divider in the pasteurizer
according to the instructions for use given on the package.
NOTE: Water hardness may affect powdered detergents to break down. Powdered cleaning agents
can cause a film build up on medical devices and the tank due to undissolved powder. For facilities
that have hard water or high mineral content, Cenorin recommends using Clean 505 Liquid General
Purpose Cleaner. The Clean 505 Liquid will work well in both soft and hard water.

NOTE: Be sure to use the amount as directed on the Clean 505 product package.

Using too much

of powdered cleaning agent may leave residue on the walls of the tank, basket, and medical devices.
If the cleaning residue is not rinsed off between cycles, it will create layers of residue that will be later
difficult to remove. Follow preventive maintenance instructions of this manual.

10. Close and lock the pasteurizer chamber lid.

the Model 520. It is non-sudsing; low phosphate; effective against proteins; safe for glass, metal,
rubber, and plastic; and has efficacy at the temperature of the hospital's tap water.
NOTE: Water hardness may affect powdered detergents to break down. Powdered cleaning agents can
cause a film build up on medical devices and the tank due to undissolved powder. For facilities that have
hard water or high mineral content, Cenorin recommends using Clean 505 Liquid General Purpose
Cleaner. The Clean 505 Liquid will work well in both soft and hard water.

NOTE: Be sure to use the amount as directed on the Clean 505 product package.

Using too much of

powdered cleaning agent may leave residue on the walls of the tank, basket, and medical devices. If the
cleaning residue is not rinsed off between cycles, it will create layers of residue that will be later difficult
to remove. Follow preventive maintenance instructions of this manual.

Figure 6. Tank Features

A.

TANK FEATURES

Stainless steel basket: All equipment is loaded in the large stainless steel basket in Tank 1 using
compartment and layer dividers as needed. The stainless steel basket has four notched side grips set at
90 intervals to accept the metal ring of the layer dividers and compartment dividers. In the center of the
basket is a small parts compartment with a separate wire lid.
Layer dividers: The layer dividers act as shelves to hold equipment in place, and the top layer divider
keeps the equipment submerged. To install layer dividers, place two fingers through the round holes on
one side of the divider; with the other hand, squeeze the two wire bars (in the rectangular cutout)
together. This retracts the outer ring and allows the layer divider to slide up and down inside the basket.
Position the divider at the desired level and release the bars, snapping the outer ring into the uprights in
the basket. Remove by squeezing the two wire bars to retract the outer ring and lift the layer divider from
the basket. This procedure requires two hands.
Compartment dividers: The compartment dividers provide up to four smaller compartments within the
layers in the basket. Compartment dividers slide into slots on the uprights of the basket and rest on the
layer dividers. They stabilize the load, cut down on excess movement and wear, and keep small parts
from moving into larger pieces of equipment (i.e. bottles or jars).
Nylon mesh bags: The nylon mesh bags keep equipment from getting lost and damaged during
agitation of the machine. They aid in the removal of devices, preventing recontamination when
transferring parts to an ThermaSure dryer. Each mesh bag is fitted with a zipper closure for use with
very small parts to prevent them from getting lost in the basket or tank.

B.

PROCESS DATA RECORDER

The Model 520 has been fitted with a panel mounted Process Data Recorder (PDR). It will print a record
of all cycles and operations, including the date and time, on a continuous 2 paper "audit trail". These
records can be torn off and filed after each cycle or as often as needed. Process records should be
reviewed after each cycle to validate that the selected cycle has been completed.
If the printer is not functioning, the pasteurizer will display no Pdr in the TEMPERATURE and TIMER
windows when a cycle is started. This may indicate that the PDR is not receiving power (check the
transformer hookup inside the control cabinet). Call HLD Systems if further assistance is required.
When the problem is corrected, the cycle will start. The cycle can also be started by pressing the START
button a second time, which bypasses the PDR.
If a pasteurization cycle does not complete due to heat failure, the process data recorder will
print, Failure of Pasteurization Cycle: Requires Service. See Special Safeguards for further
instruction.
To change the paper in the PDR, follow the pictures below:

SPECIAL SAFEGUARDS

Lid-Latch Mechanism Operator safety is assured by a lid latch and an automatic shut-off system
which immediately discontinues all washing and pasteurizing activities when the chamber lid is opened.

Figure 8. Model 520 with Safety Lid-locking Mechanism

Lid Switch This switch interrupts all system actions and internal timers when the lid on Tank 1 is
opened. This prevents contact between the tanks contents and the operator during a cycle. If the lid is
opened during a cycle, LID will display on the TIMER window. To resume operation, close the lid to
Tank 1.
Overflow Tank 2 is overflow protected to prevent water from running over onto the floor during a water
transfer from Tank 1 to Tank 2, which could occur if the CANCEL button is not pressed when Tank 2 fills
significantly above the minimum liquid level. If this occurs, the OVER FLOW indicator will light on the
control panel and OFLO will display in the TIMER window. If this occurs, all action will stop until the
overflow is corrected by the user and the CANCEL button is pressed. Use the following procedure to
correct for overflow:
a) Lift both tank lids.
b) Manually empty water from Tank 2 into Tank 1 or a sink. OFLO will continue to be displayed
in the TIMER window. To turn off the OFLO indicator, press CANCEL to reset the unit.
c) Close both tank lids and press CANCEL.
Level Controls The Tank 1 level control assures that an adequate volume of water is in Tank 1 before
heating and before proceeding to the pasteurization cycle. If there is not a sufficient amount of water, the
cycle will remain in TO TANK 1 mode until the minimum liquid level is reached. The Tank 2 level control
assures that the water in Tank 2 is not heated unless adequate water is present in the tank. The Tank 2
level control also prevents overflow.
Pasteurization Temperature The WASH/PASTEURIZE CYCLE or PASTEURIZE cycle will not run if
the water has not reached pasteurization temperature or if the heating system is not functioning. This
prevents false pasteurization cycles from being run.
Initialization of Control Board Each time the CANCEL button is pressed or the power is turned on,
the control board automatically toggles through all of the lights to verify that each one is operating. This
check should be made periodically to ensure proper functioning of the machine.
HS SLSMAN 01 Rev.W

22

Controlled

System Self Check Diagnostics The Software continuously monitors key components in the system
to assure that they are performing correctly (system timers, water level sensors and temperature
sensors). In the event that the Software detects an anomaly it will notify the user by displaying a service
code in the Temperature and Time display windows. A service required message will also be printed
from the printer. The current cycle will be aborted and the beeper will sound. Service Code messages
will continue to be displayed each time a function is selected until the anomaly has been corrected. If a
service required message appears refer to the Service Manual for instructions.

IX.

CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE

A.

EXTERIOR SURFACES

All exterior surfaces should be wiped on a weekly basis with an appropriate germicide. We recommend
the use of a non-abrasive or low-abrasive cleaning agent whenever possible to maintain the appearance
of the Model 520.
The Control Panel should also be cleaned on a weekly basis using either a non-abrasive cleaner with a
small amount of water or an alcohol wipe. DO NOT use a solvent-based cleaner.

B.

STAINLESS STEEL TANKS

Regular cleaning and maintenance is essential to assure best performance of the wash and pasteurizer
functions of the Model 520. Local water condition (mineral content and pH) and excessive or incorrect
formulation of cleaning agents may cause excessive buildup of film on medical devices and the tank
walls of both Tank 1 and Tank 2. Cenorin recommends liquid cleaning agents and can supply its Clean
505 General Purpose Liquid for the customer. Local water conditions will dictate the frequency of
cleaning necessary to keep the tanks clean.
Drain both tanks of all water. Clean the stainless steel tanks at least weekly following established
cleaning procedures. A sponge pad or Scotch-Brite pad with an effective cleaning agent that is
appropriate for stainless steel may be used to clean the tank. Cenorin recommends a general purpose
cleaner for cleaning tanks. Demineralization products will also aid in this process (such as CLR). All
tank cleaning agents need to be thoroughly rinsed from the tank prior to normal use. The frequency of
cleaning may vary according to local water conditions and mineral content, frequency of use, or facility
policy and procedure. In extreme cases, de-ionized water or a water filter may be needed.
Weekly cleaning of the drain screens in the tanks will prevent build-up of lint and other residues. This
cleaning is a must for the Model 520 to be able to function properly. To reach the drain screen, the
basket must be removed. If a drain screen becomes too clogged to be cleaned in place, remove the
center screw holding it, take out the screen, and use a hand scratch brush to clean. Replace the screen
and the center screw.
The water inlet port located on the top left of Tank 1 should be cleaned with a cotton swab and a
germicidal cleaner.

C.

MAINTENANCE

Note: Only qualified personnel should perform maintenance activities. For all other servicing activities,
refer to the HLD Systems 520/540 Pasteurizer Service Manual for instruction. Use only Cenorin
authorized replacement parts for all maintenance and service activities. Using unauthorized replacement
parts may invalidate the equipment warranty.
Temperature Calibration Check: Every six months, calibrate the Tank 1 temperature. To do this,
measure the water temperature during a pasteurization cycle (near 161F (72C)) with the digital
thermometer provided with the Model 520. Compare this value to the temperature displayed on the
machine. If the two temperatures are more than 2F (1C) of each other, contact Technical Support at
800-426-1042 for further assistance.
Water Level Calibration Check: Every six months verify the water level calibration. Do the following:
a. Place the top layer divider in the top slots of the basket assembly.
HS SLSMAN 01 Rev.W

level is above the top layer divider. If the water level is below the top layer divider contact
Technical Support at 800-426-1042 for further assistance.
c. After checking the water level is above the top layer divider, be sure to drain the unit by pressing
the SELECT FUNCTION until the indicator light is on DRAIN. Press START.
d. Water level calibration check is complete.
Preventive Maintenance Kit: A bi-annual Preventive Maintenance Kit should be used to keep the
Model 520 in working order. This prevents the machine from developing mechanical flaws that could
lead to leaking, agitation inconsistencies, or other functional problems. It is recommended that this
procedure be performed every six months, and that a spare PM Kit be kept on hand to avoid
unnecessary down time.
