Based on Shelleys extended familys personal connection to the Holocaust, and Kates

curiosity, we thought the Holocaust would be an interesting topic to research. Shelleys Uncles
mother, lived in Germany and forced by her will to go to Auschwitz, one of the most ruthless
concentration camps. Thankfully, she escaped, but her mother, sister and brother were all killed.
Her father was forced to work in labor factories until the war ended. Her and her father were not
reunited for twenty-five years after the war ended. Our history teacher suggested to pick a
situation of Hitler resistance, as it both relates to taking a stand in history and our wish to
research a topic connected to the Holocaust. We initially chose the White Rose Movement, but
after much researching, we narrowed our topic down to Hans and Sophie Scholl, siblings who
founded the White Rose group.
To begin our research, we watched Marc Rothemund film, Sophie Scholl- The Final
Days, and read several books relating to the White Rose Movement that were very helpful in
our preliminary research. We visited the Boston University Library, and found many primary
and secondary sources that helped further our research. Our research really began when we
found several books entirely on Sophie and Hans Scholls lives. These books gave us insight into
the heart of the White Rose Movement and the experiences that Hans and Sophie Scholl faced.
Initially, we wanted to create an exhibition, but with the five hundred word count, we felt
it was not enough words to rightfully convey our topic. Therefore, we chose a website which
would give us more freedom in expressing our own words while still being able to use quotes
from other sources. Our website is divided into multiple tabs, each one explaining a different part
of Hans and Sophie Scholls life. We further divided each tab into subdivisions in order to
entirely prove our thesis.

Hans and Sophie Scholl took a stand in history when they decided to oppose Hitler and
the Nazi Regime. Because of their childhood experiences and good morals, the siblings were
horrified by Hitler's treatment of the Jews, and new they had to do something. They knew
defying Hitler was a very dangerous act, but standing up for what they believed in was worth the
consequences for them. They wrote a distributed anti-war and anti-Nazi leaflets, and created a
graffiti movement in an effort to denounce the Nazi Regime. This courageous act ultimately led
to their death. Even when Sophie Scholl was given the chance to escape death, she stood by her
brother, insisting that she was as fault as much as her brother. She would have rather died with
her brother then abandoned everything she worked for. Sophie and Hans took a stand against the
brutal dictator and the German government, facing fear and the chance of death all to defend the
Jews from racial discrimination.
