Hierbij het boek van Longfellow, het zal wel een vriend van U worden.
Vandaag beantwoordde ik weer twee advertenties, ik ga daar maar mede voort al komt er geen antwoord op de meeste
brieven.
Mijn tijd begint op te korten hier.
Gij zult wel veel moois zien op Uwe reis; 1 hoewel het gevoel voor de natuur niet datte is, zoo is het toch eene heerlijke
bezitting; moge het ons maar altijd bij blijven.

En nu zult gij in menige herberg te huis liggen,

naar Brighton deed,

dat is ook een eigenaardig genot soms. Gij weet ik eens eene voetreis

ik denk altijd met genot daar aan terug. De logementen in Engeland zijn dikwijls zoo aardig,

Longfellow beschrijft dat goed in Tales of the wayside inn.

Gladwell krijgt mijne plaats in de galerij, en is er reeds, om op de hoogte te zijn tegen dat ik wegga. Ik heb nog al schilderijen
gezien die voor den Salon bestemd zijn, o.a. twee zeer mooie groote Gabriels, een morgen in de weilanden, door den dauw ziet
men in de verte eene stad, het andere was wat wij een waterzonnetje zouden noemen. 5
Ook 2 groote Xavier de Cocks, het eene een avond in t begin van den zomer, eene weide met populieren omgeven; in de verte
de boerderij en velden en een meisje dat de koeijen naar huis brengt. Op den voorgrond een poel waarbij 3 koeijen, een witte,
een zwarte en een roode, in het gras liggen; de zon is reeds onder en de lucht zacht geel, de boomen donker daartegen.
Ik schrijf zeer in haast zooals gij aan het schrift zult merken.

My dear Theo,
Herewith the book by Longfellow, it will no doubt become a friend of yours.
Today I responded to two more advertisements, Ill go on doing it, even though most of my letters remain unanswered.
My time here is running out.
Youll surely see many beautiful things on your trip;
thing to have; may it always remain with us.
And now youll be boarding in many inns,
on foot.

although a feeling for nature isnt it, its nonetheless a wonderful

thats also a singular pleasure at times. You know that I once went to Brighton

I always think back on it with pleasure. Lodging-houses in England are often so pleasant,

Gladwell is getting my place at the gallery; hes there already, learning the ropes before I leave. Ive seen quite a few paintings
that are going to the Salon, including two very beautiful, large Gabrils, a morning in the meadows, through the dew one sees a
town in the distance, the other one was what we would call a watery sun. 5
Also 2 large Xavier de Cocks, one of them an evening at the beginning of summer, a meadow surrounded by poplars; in the
distance a farmhouse and fields and a girl bringing the cows home. In the foreground a pond, next to which 3 cows a white
one, a black one and a red one lie in the grass; the sun has already set and the sky is pale yellow, the trees dark against it.
Im writing in great haste, as youll see from my handwriting.

3. The journey on foot will have taken place when Van Gogh was living in London, between June 1873 and May 1875 (except for
a three-month interval from October to December 1874, when he was in Paris). Brighton is on the south coast of England, c. 80
km south of London.
4. The beginning of Tales of a Wayside inn (1863) contains an evocation of the interior of an inn at Sudbury.
