Problem 1:

Column

Design a square tied column with reasonable amount of reinforcement to support

PDL=500kip and PLL=400 kip
Given fc=4 ksi and fy=60ksi

Problem 2:

Design a tied column with about 3% reinforcement to support

PDL=400kip and PLL=350 kip
Given fc=5 ksi and fy=72.5ksi

Due to architectural reason, the width of column b=12 should be maintained.

Problem 3:
Architect decided a column to be 12x 22 inch. Design the reinforcements (main and tie)
for the column for loads
PDL=250kip and PLL=150 kip
Given fc=3. ksi and fy=60ksi

Problem 4:
A circular column carries a working/service DL=900k and LL=500k. Design the spirally
reinforced column using reasonable percentage of main reinforcement by USD. Also design the ACI
spiral. Given: fc=4.5 ksi and fy=60ksi.

Problem 5:
A 16x24in column is reinforced with ten No. 9 bars as shown in Fig.1 . Construct the
nominal strength interaction diagram for the column with five points corresponding to pure axial load,
pure bending, balance condition, s= 0.001 (tensile) and s=0.004 (tensile). Also find corresponding for
the above points. Assume bending about Y-Y axis. Given: fc=5ksi and fy=72.5ksi.

Problem 6:
A column is reinforced with ten No. 10 bars as shown in Fig. 2 . Construct the nominal
strength interaction diagram for the column with five points corresponding to pure axial load, pure
bending, balance condition. Assume bending about Y-Y axis. Given: fc=4 ksi and fy=60 ksi.

Problem 7:
A plan and section of a 5-storied building on beams and columns are shown in Fig.3. All
the beams in all floors are 12x24 including slab.
Column sections proposed are to be 24x24 in ground floor
Slab thickness in all floors=6.5

Average lime concrete on roof=30psf

Live load on roof=25psf
Floor finish (FF) on all floor= 25psf
Random partition wall load on all floor=50psf
Live load on typical floor=80psf
Given: fc=3ksi and fy=60ksi.
Design the interior column considering vertical loads only. Draw a section showing all reinforcement.

Problem 8:
A ground floor column of a multistoried building is to be designed for the following load
combinationsGravity load condition Pu=600kip, Mu=70 kip-ft
Lateral load combination Pu=550 kip, Mu=400 kip-ft
Architectural considerations require that a rectangular column with b=15in. and h=25 is to be used.
Material strengths are fc=4ksi and fy=60ksi. Find the required column reinforcement, tie size and spacing
and show in sketches. Use relevant design chart assuming reinforcement distributed along the
perimeter.

Problem 9:
A 26x26 in column is reinforced with sixteen No. 9 bars arranged around the column
perimeter. Material strengths are fc=4ksi and fy=60ksi. Check adequacy of the short column for
Pu=600 kip, Mux=400 kip-ft, Muy=350 kip-ft
Use-

1. Load contour method

2. Reciprocal Load method.

Assume =0.80.
Problem 10: For the column of Problem 9, using charts, find column strength Pn for e=13.0 (one
directional eccentricity only).
Problem 11: For the column of Problem 9, using charts, draw the uniaxial design interaction diagram for
e/h=0, 0.1, 0.4, 1, infinity.
Problem 12: Design tie for the column of Problem 9 considering seismic provisions of an IMRF system.
Clear height of the column is 10ft. Show tie arrangements in cross- and long-sections.

Problem on shear-wall:
A shear-wall of a 16-storey building is subjected to following factored loads:
Pu=600 kip, Vu= 450kip, Mu=6000 kip-ft
The wall is 18ft long, 160ft high and 12inch thick. Design the shear-wall with fc=4ksi and fy=60ksi. Ignore
axial force as it is less than balanced load of the section.
