Itisimportanttofollowafewrulesandguidelineswhensummarizing.Seriousrou ngproblemswill
happenotherwisesuchasroutersadver singnetworksinaccuratelyandpossiblyduplica ngother
routersadver sements,subop maloreventotallyincorrectrou ng,andseveredataloss.
Therstruleistodesignyournetworkswithsummariza oninmind,evenifyoudontneedityet.This
meansthatyouwillgroupcon guoussubnetstogetherbehindtherouterthatwillsummarizethem
youdonotwanttohavesomesubnetsfromasummarizedgroupbehindsomeotherrouter.The
summaryisessen allysaying,Icanreachthenetworksrepresentedbythissummary;sendanytrac
forthemthroughme.Ifone(ormore)ofthenetworksbehindthesummarizingrouterisunavailable,
tracwillbedroppedbutnotbythesummarizingrouter,becausetheindividualroutestothe
networksthatweresummarizedares llvalid,andhavealongermatchentrythanthesummary.The
packetwillgetroutedtotherouterthatconnectstothedeadnetwork,anddroppedthere.Advance
planning,includingmakingplentyofroomforfuturegrowth,willgiveyouasolid,scalablenetwork
designthatreadilylendsitselftosummarizing.Figure3.14showsabadlydesignednetworkthatwillbe
almostimpossibletosummarizebecausethesubnetsarediscon guous,withindividualsubnets

instabilityinthesummarizednetworks.Letssaythatoneofthebranchesishavingseriousspanning
treeproblemsbecauseSparkytheJuniorWoodchuckwasallowedtocongureaCiscoswitch.(Thisis
actuallyafelonyinsomestates.)Thatroutecouldbeappingup,down,up,downasspanning
treewreakshavocwithyournetwork.Therouterwillbedoingitsjob,sendingoutupdatesevery me
therouteaps.Ifwewerenotsummarizing,thoseappingmessageswouldpropagatethroughthe

Onceyousummarize,thesummaryisstable:Itcantapbecauseitisnotarealnetwork.Itsjustlikea
spokespersonatapressconference:TherumorsofareattheSpringeldplanthavehadnoimpact
onproduc onwhatsoever.Meanwhile,theSpringeldplantcouldbeacharredhulk.Thesummaryis
s llvalid,andtracwills llbesenttotherouterconnectedtotheappingnetwork.Thiskeeps
peoplefromaskinganymoreques onsabouttheSpringeldre.However,ifsomeoneweretosenda

Whenusingrou ngprotocolsinclasslesscongura ons,crea ngsummaryaddressesisatotally
manualprocess.Classfulrou ngprotocolsperformautoma csummariza on,butthatisnotasfancy
asitsounds.Theysimplytreatanysubnetastheclassfuladdressfromwhichitwascreated,which
worksifyournetworksarebuiltwiththisinmind;however,inrealitythatistoosimplis candreal
networksneedmorecustomizedsummariza on.Theupshotofallthisisthatyouneedtounderstand
howtodeterminethesummaryaddressgivenasetofnetworkstobesummarized,andyoualsoneed
tobeabletogureoutifapar cularnetworkisincludedinagivensummary.
Rememberthatsummariza onisexactlytheoppositeofsubne ng;infact,anothertermfor
summariza onissuperne ng.(Youmightalsoseeitcalledaggrega on.)Whenwesubnet,we
lengthenthemask,doublingthenumberofnetworkseach meweaddanextrabittothemask.
