Exercise #1 Download APEX-EM & Navigate the


APEX3000 Element Manager Menus
Introduction
In this lab, you will ping the APEX3000, download the APEX-EM to the SDM Desktop
and practice navigating through the APEX3000 Element Manager menus.

Task 1: Ping the APEXs IP Address from the SDM Desktop


Verify that the APEXs IP Address is configured correctly by pinging the IP address
of your APEX.
1. Right click on the SDMs desktop and choose Open Terminal.
2. Type: ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the IP address of your
APEX).
3. Hold down the Ctrl & c keys to stop the ping operation.
4. Close the Terminal window.

Task 2: Download the APEX-EM to the SDM Desktop


1. Start Mozilla Firefox (Applications > Internet >Firefox Web Browser) and enter the
APEX3000's IP address in the URL address field.
2. When the APEX3000 Home Page is displayed, click on the "Download APEX3000
Element Manager" link.
3. Save the "apex3000.jar" file to the SDMs Desktop.
4. Close the Downloads and browser windows.
5. After the file has been saved, find and run apex3000.jar by double-clicking its icon.
6. When the APEX3000 EM login window is displayed, enter the username / password
(root / password), and IP address of the APEX3000 to which you would like to
connect and click Login.

Task 3: Take a Tour of the APEX3000 Element Manager Menus


1. Select the System Status tab and then the Alarms tab. Are there currently any
alarms in the APEX3000? If so record them here:

1. Configure the frequency for QAM2-1-01 (Blade 2/RF Port 1/Channel 01) which we
are using in our lab tor broadcast services.
a. Open the Blades tab > RF Port 1 on Blade 2 > QAM Config window.
b. In the RF Port Configuration section of the screen, click Frequency
Selection link.
c. Drag the channel identifier QAM2-1-01 on the left side to the Assigned
Channel slot opposite Frequency 699.0 / EIA 108 and drop.
2. Configure the APEX3000 RF Port and QAM on Blade 2 using the following
parameters:

Task 3: Verify the Manual Routing (Broadcast) Configuration


1. If you have configured the routes correctly, you should be able to see video on
channels 201-208 and 401 (Broadcast Channels/Services) using the SlingPlayer
Launch the SlingPlayer and choose your headends Slingbox (F or H). Using the
Sling Remote turn on the set-top if not on and enter channel 201. Channel up
through channels 201 to 208. Enter channel 401.
2. Using the APEX3000 Element Manager confirm the mappings are successful. Select
Blades tab > Select RF Port 1 on Blade 2 > Prog Status tab. There should be
nine (9) program mappings. All should have a Program Status of Successful
Program Remultiplexed. Select the first output program and right click under the
Program Status column. Click on Input Stream Status. Click Refresh to update
Rates displays. The rates should reflect traffic and change with the Refresh
operation. Click Errors. Every GigE Input TS Error should be OK (green). Click
Close 2 times to exit.
3. Using the APEX3000 Element Manager confirm the mappings have data present.
Select Blades tab > Select Blade 2 (QAM) > Output Stats tab. The OTS Status
and Threshold Alarm should be OK (green). Click Refresh to update Cur Data Rate
(Mbps) display. The rate should reflect traffic and change with the Refresh operation.

2. Select a switched channel. Using the APEX3000 Element Manager confirm the
mapping is successful. Select Blades tab > Select RF Port 1 on Blade 1 > Prog
Status tab. There should be a program mapping. It should have a Program Status
of Successful Program Remultiplexed.
3. Select Blades tab > Blade 1 (QAM) > RTSP Status tab. On Index 001 there should
be the current SDV session listed.
4. Select Chassis tab > SDV tab. The RTSP Session Count: should be 1. The
Controller Discovery: should be Discovered and the Controller Connection:
should be Connected.
