Two people died in a murder-suicide at UCLAs Engineer i n g I V bu i ld i n g ea rly
Wednesday, police said.
The shooting took place
in a small office around 10
a.m., said Los Angeles Police
Depar tment Ch ief Charl ie
Beck at a press conference.
Both the shooter and another
person died at the scene.

degree from UCLA in 1999 and
led the Klug Research Group,
which studies theoretical and
computational biomechanics.
UCLA officials would not
confirm the identity of the
deceased. Beck said only the
coroners office is authorized
to release identifying information, and the LA County
Coroners Office declined to
release the information.
Officials said LAPD w ill
continue to investigate the
incident as a homicide. Beck
said some officers reported
evidence of a suicide note, but

the note has not been confirmed.

The shooter, a male adult,
was found dead with a gun.
Officials said they could not

USDA revokes license of

UCLA antibody supplier

A major antibody supplier
for UCLA agreed to stop selling
products under an agreement
with the United States Department of Agriculture.
USDA f i ned Sa nt a Cr u z
Biotechnology $ 3.5 million
and revoked the companys
license to produce antibodies
in the settlement agreement it
released.

UCL A, wh ich pu rchased

$360,000 worth of antibodies from the company in 2016,
will evaluate the settlements
impact on current research
projects, said UCLA Health
spokesperson Tami Dennis.
She said the university will look
for other suppliers to replace
Santa Cruz Biotechnology.
She added Santa Cruz Biotechnology is one of about 20
antibody suppliers to UCLA
laboratories. However, Dennis

said getting continuous supply

from the same companies is
important to be able to replicate experiments.
Bob Goldberg, a professor of
molecular, cell, and developmental biology, said antibodies

identify where specific proteins
are located in cells. Antibodies can also be used to purify

Students improve Wikipedia

science entries, benefit all
BY ALLISON ONG
Daily Bruin reporter
In Heather Tiensons biochemistry advanced honors
seminar, students dont cite
Wikipedia articles for their
research assignments: they
rewrite them.
Tiensons Chemistry 189
students this quarter edited
scientific Wikipedia articles
as part the Year of Science,
a program launched by the
Wiki Education Foundation to
expand reliable science content on Wikipedia.
Multiple teachers at UCLA
have introduced the same
assignment in their classes,
leaving students newfound
research results on the web
for the public to use, said Eryk
Salvaggio, communications
manager for the Wiki Education Foundation.
During a presentation Friday, Jeet Das, a third-year
physiological sciences student
in Tiensons class, described
his findings about the drug
nociceptin and its medicinal

benefits to the class. Das said

writing the article helped him
apply chemistry concepts he
learned in Chemistry 153A:
Introduction to Structure,
Enzymes and Metabolism to
a real-life setting. Tienson said
she was initially drawn to the
idea of a Wikipedia writing
assignment because it gives
students the opportunity to
develop their research skills in
a unique format.
Its not like writing a lab
report or writing a paper,
Tienson said. I tell them on
the first day: write a good article one a high school student
can understand but one I can
gain something from.
About 200 American and
Canadian colleges including
Harvard University and UC
Berkeley have participated in
the program. UCLA alone has
contributed more than 65,000
entries to Wikipedias science
content since the Year of Science launch date. At UCLA,
87 students have contributed
more than 70 articles the
most successful year the foun-

Students selected a topic
based on how much information about it was available on
Wikipedia, Tienson said. Lisa
Liu, a second-year microbiology, immunology and molecular genetics student, said she
wrote about protein aggregation because she had studied it
in a lab. Since the article only
contained a basic introduction to her topic, she compiled
additional information from
PubMed and her biochemistry
textbook. It helps us understand the topic better because
were writing in simpler terms,
Liu said.
After he researched nocicepti n th rou g h scienti f ic
research databases, Das said
he not only added to pre-existing sections but created two
new ones: one on the drugs
cognitive effects and the other on its usage to treat drug
addictions.
