My Adventure at Leang-Leang Cave

On Sunday, my parents, my best fruend Novi, and I visited a cave at
Maros called Leang-leang . It was my first time to visit the cave, better
yet, my best friend came to visit it with me!
The cave was famous for its primitive cave wall paintings which were
some hand prints and wild boar paintings. The cave and its surroundings
was turned into a national park, so it was taken care of. My parents took a
rest in a small hut for visitors of the park, while Novi and I adventured
around the cave with a guide. We had to climb some metal stairs to get to
the cave, because the cave was embedded into a small mountain. Next
stop was a place where some seashells littered the ground and some were
actually piled into a big mound! The guide said that these piles of
seashells are called kjokkenmoddinger, or kitchen trash. The humans who
lived here ate the shells and dumped the left overs in their 'kitchen'. The

last place was a small museum where they have skeletons of the humans
who lived in the caves. The skeletons along with some roughly made
jewelry and weapons were placed inside glass cases for display. The walls
of the museum were adorned with photographs taken when they did an
excavation there.
After a quick lunch with Novi and my parents, we decided it was time to
go back home. We really had the time of our lives!

RA Kartini
Every April 21, people in Indonesia commemorate the Kartini day. It is a
beautiful day for the woman because we celebrate the birth of great lady,
RA. Kartini. Everyone knows who kartini is. She is our national heroine and
a great lady with the bright idea. Kartini was born in 1879, April 21 in
Mayong Jepara. Her father was RMAA. Sosroningrat, Wedana (assistant of
head of regency) in Mayong. Her mother, MA Ngasirah was a girl from
Teluk Awur village in Jepara. As the daughter of a noble family, she felt
luck because she got more than the ordinary people got. She got better
education than other children. She did anything she wants although it was
forbidden. She passed her childhood with her brother and sister. Because
she was very energetic, her father called her "trinil" Then her father was
chosen as Bupati (the head of regency) in Jepara. She and her family then
moved from Mayong to Jepara. In the same year, Kartini's second sister RA
Kardinah was born. The environment in Jepara gave her big chance to
develop her idea. She could study at the Dutch owned school where only
children from noble family could study here. Few years after finishing her
study, RA. Kartini was willing to continue her study in higher level. But the
custom of that day forbid a woman to go to school. A tradition of that
time, a teenage girl should be secluded and limited her activity. So was
Kartini. She was secluded inside the house and forbidden to go out until a
man propose her. The rule could restrict her body but not her mind.
During her "pingitan" time, she spent her time by reading book which she
got from her relatives. Although she was not able to continue her study to
higher level, she was smart had a bright idea. She got the knowledge from
the books she read. To express her idea, she established a school for local
people on the backyard of Jepara city hall. In November 12,1903, she
married Adipati Djoyodiningrat, the head of Rembang regency. According
to Javanese tradition Kartini had to follow her husband. Then she moved
to Rembang.
In September 13, 1904 she gave a birth to her son. His name was Singgih.
But after giving birth to a son, her condition was getting worse and she
finally passed away on September 17, 1904 on her 25 years old.
Now Kartini has gone. But her spirit and dream will always be in our heart.
Nowadays Indonesian women progress is influenced by Kartini's spirit
stated on collection of letter "Habis gelap terbitlah terang" from the dusk
to the dawn.

The Purse of Gold

A beggar found a leather purse that someone had dropped in a market
place. Opening it, he discovered that it contained 100 pieces of gold. Then

he heard a merchant shouted, "A reward! A reaward to the one who find
my leather purse!"
Being an honest man, the beggar came forward and handed the purse to

more than the reward I'll give to you.! Go away or I'll tell you to the
police."
"I'm an honest man," said the beggar defiantly. "Let's take this matter to
the court!" In the court, the judge patiently listened to both sides of the
story and said, "I believe you both. Justice is possible! Merchant, you
stated that the purse you lost contained 200 pieces of gold. Well, that's a
considerable cost. But the purse the beggar found had only 100 pieces of
gold. Therefore, it couldn't be the one you lost."
And, with that, the judge gave the purse and all the golds to the beggar.

Corruption and Indonesian Culture

Corruption has happened for many years and today it becomes a bad
culture in Indonesia for three reasons
Most adult Indonesian or foreigners have known and admitted that
corruptions happen in many places. The daily newspapers, news programs
on TV and radio have reported corruptions are done everywhere, almost in
all departments or public services of this country. Corruptions happen in
health, education departments and banks. When we manage to get some
documents in public service offices, we usually need much money to pay.
Manipulations happen everywhere
The actions to eliminate corruption are weak. The ever stronger culture
seems not to come to an end when the responsible institutions who have
to reinforce the justice today commit corruption. This is the worst.
Corruptions happen in police department, courts where judges, public
prosecutors, lawyers make deals to do corruption. All of us also heard in
the end of 2004, Probosutejo reported that he had bribed the Supreme
Court, or called Mahkamah Agung which becomes the highest level where
the justice can be obtained. Perhaps you have to try to come to the local
courts and see what happen there. You will see practices of bribery and
other kinds of corruption. Therefore, we can say that corruptions becomes
our culture. Do you like it?

11

The citizens have no goodwill to fight against the corruption. They create
the situations in which people have opportunities to do corruptions. The
citizens like to break the rules

because they are not disciplined. For example, in the street when they
drive a car or ride motorcycle, they do not have the driving license or
necessary documents. Then, they are caught by the local policemen. To
avoid more difficulties, they like to bribe the officer. The officer let them
go then. In other words, the citizens and officers are the same, doing
corruption together. If only the people were critical, disciplined, and obey
the rules, and willing to report any wrong behaviors, this country will not
be number one corrupting country in the world.
conclusion Based on the reasons, we can conclude that corruption is
becoming a bad culture in Indonesia if it is not ended soon by all of us. It
seems that there must be more severe penalty for the corruptors. Do we
still care about the future of this country?

Television becomes one of the most important devices which takes place
in almost houses. It can unite all members of the family as well as
separate them. However, is it important to know what your kids are
watching? The answer is, of course, absolutely Yes and that should be
done by all parents. Television can expose things you have tried to protect
the children from, especially violence, pornography, consumerism and so
on.
Recently, a study demonstrated that spending too much time on watching
TV during the day or at bedtime often cause bed-time disruption, stress,
and short sleep duration.
Another research found that there is a significant relationship between the
amount of time spent for watching television during adolescence and
early adulthood, and the possibility of being aggressive.

watch TV a lot and being inactive and overweight.

The importance of Reading

I personally think that reading is a very important activity in our life. Why
do I say so?
Firstly, by reading we can get a lot of knowledge about many things in the
world such as Science, technology. Sports, arts, culture, etc written in
either books, magazine, newspaper, etc.
Secondly, by reading we can get a lot of news and information about
something happening in any parts of the world which can we see directly.
Another reason, reading can give us pleasure too. When we are tired, we
read books, newspaper or magazine on the entertainment coloumn such
as comedy, short story, quiz, etc. To make us relaxed.
The last, reading can also take us to other parts of the world. By reading
a book about Irian Jaya we may feel were really sitting in the jungles not
at home in our rooms.
From the facts above, its obvious that everyone needs to read to get
knowledge, information and also entertainment. Or in summary we can
say reading is truly important in our life.
