Year 6 Newsletter

January 2017
Happy New Year! It seems only two minutes since we were making Christmas cards and constructing
wonderful post boxes, the best boxes yet- I believe! The Spring term is always a very busy one in
Year 6 as we prepare the children for the SAT tests commencing on Monday 8th May. Secondary
School places are allocated and we begin to liaise with those schools to ensure a smooth transition
for the children. Throughout this term we have lots of new and exciting learning opportunities
planned in all areas of the curriculum.
Literacy
This half-term we will begin by writing stories using flash backs. We will also
focus on the technical elements in our writing to ensure we are creating
concise, detailed sentences using a range of punctuation, vocabulary and a
variety of sentence structures. We will then progress onto persuasive and
explanation texts relating to our topic of Our Wonderful World.
Ways to help
Continue to read with your child, encourage independent reading too and ask them to write short
reviews once they have completed a book. Ensure they are creating lists of words from their
reading books which they need to research and understand fully.

Maths
We will begin the term recapping number sequences with varying rules, and understanding place
value. We will then progress onto recapping all the written calculation
methods and applying these to problem solving tasks. It is really important
for the children to now approach questions or problems and independently
choose the correct method in order to solve the problem. Following this we
will then progress onto fractions, decimals and percentages and calculate
equivalent fractions, compare and order fractions and convert between them.
Ways to help Continue to practice instant recall of all multiplication tables.
Please talk to your child when they are completing their homework and ask
the children to explain how they have calculated an answer or solved a problem. Consistently
reinforce key mathematical vocabulary such as multiples, factors, prime numbers and digits to assist
your child with their independent problem solving.

Science Light
This term we will begin by learning about how light travels and the different
forms of light. We will conduct experiments to further our understanding of
how light travels and reflects. Furthermore, we will then learn about shadows
and how our eyes work in order for us to see objects and we will understand
the part light has to play in this.
Ways to help Explore reflections and shadows outside of school. Research
Sir Isaac Newtons theory of colour from a prism and identify key findings
from James Clerk Maxwells research into the theory of light.

Homework
In Year 6, each child receives a menu for their homework every Monday. They have to choose at
least 3 pieces each week to complete and one must be from the extra-hot level. They must read
each night and have their reading record signed to show this. Please ensure they bring their
homework book and reading record into school each day.
Please encourage children to choose homework pieces which challenge and consolidate their
learning - especially if it is something they found difficult in class.
