Step Into the Light: Durango Stories at Durango Art Center (DAC)
Friday, March 3 Show times at 5:00pm and 7:30pm
Application for Step Into the Light event
Description of evening for tellers:
Microphone only, no large props if any, tellers may hold notes but must have
practiced the story in order to not read from notes. Tellers will be introduced by
emcee before they tell their story.
There are two shows. The early show is geared toward a younger audience and will
have, but is not limited to, younger tellers. The later show will have adult tellers and
is geared toward an adult audience but some children may be present.
Guidelines for the stories:
1. No longer than 10 minutes
2. Avoid:
profane language or cursing, sexually suggestive topics
controversial, political or religious statements
Embarrassing individuals by using their names, (unless cleared by
individual).
3. Can be funny or intense
Tips for telling a good story:
1. Have a core idea and know your audience
2. Put story into context. Why are you the one telling it?
3. Why does this story matter? Why tell it?
4. Know where your story is heading
5. Be careful with stories that involve someone that could be in the audience
6. All stories should have:
Opening hook
Core idea
Key facts or examples, (provide imagery for the listener)
Strong closing message or moral of the story, what was learned, tie it all
together
