typicalemeraldwithmoderateclarityenhancement.ItwascategorizedasF2,indicatingthatthefracturingpresentinthestonehadanoticeablebutnot
significanteffectonthefaceupappearance.Furthermicroscopicexaminationofthepavilionrevealedtwoprominentdrillholesfilledwitharesinand
emeraldfragments(figure2).Theresindisplayedablueandyellowflasheffect,andgasbubblestrappedintheresinwerealsopresent(figure3).The
fillerhadmuchhigherreliefthantheemeraldhostandwasclearlyvisibleunderreflectedlightduetothedifferenceinlusterbetweenthetwomaterials
(figure4).

Thequestionaroseastowhysuchatreatmentwouldbeperformedonthisstone.Microscopicobservationdidnotyieldanyclues.Onehypothesis
wouldbethateyevisibleinclusionswereremovedbydrilling,analogoustothelaserdrillingtreatmentwellknownindiamonds.Assumingthistheoryis
true,theenhancementactuallysignificantlyreducedthevalueofthisgoodqualityemerald.Weconcludedthatthestonecontainedaresinous
materialinthedrillholesalongwithemeraldfragments.ThiswasthefirsttimeGIAsNewYorklabhadwitnessedthistypeofenhancementinan
emerald.
