Dear members of the selection committee of Arstotzka,

Good evening members of the selection committee of Arstotzka. I would like to present
this application to become the absolute ruler of your beautiful country. I have the capability of
being the ruler of this country and I hope you jump on the opportunity. I have received advice
from the best and some consider me one of the most influential leaders of Spain.
My father, Charles V, was a great ruler but the stress level of one person controlling such a
vast area was too great and he divided up his kingdom, giving most of it to me. He has taught me
everything I would need to know to be a remarkable ruler. I have been educated in the beliefs of
Catholicism, in which your country happens to have it as your countrys religion. I would be
happy to spread Catholicism throughout your country. I am a defender of the Roman Catholic
Church and I would do anything to protect it.
I have accomplished many feats in my days, most of which characterize my personality
and my ruling abilities. I assure you that I would be the most astounding ruler you have ever had.
I ushered Spain into their Golden Century. This was a time of great prosperity in Spain and I
was a patron of the arts. I helped the Catholic persecute the Protestants during the CounterReformation. This could be one me one of way I could spread Catholicism across your country if
that is what your country desires. Many people, who have seen me rule and watched how
prosperous Spain has become, call me one of the most superlative absolute rulers they have ever
seen.
I have come to understand that Charles I has sent his own application to you in order to
rule your marvelous country. I guarantee you that this man would ruin your country. He is a thief
and a liar and has no respect for the way his country operates. He was an absolute monarch in

England and most know that in order to be an absolute monarch there, you must abide by the
rules of Parliament. He has only wanted maximum power over England so he tricked Parliament
by signing the Petition of Right, which prohibited the king from raising taxes without
Parliaments consent or from imprisoning anyone without cause. However, after Charles got the
money, he dissolved Parliament. This clearly shows he is not a trustable ruler. Charles I then
forced Anglicanism on his people and imprisoned dissenters. I would not force a religion on my
people. I would encourage them to believe in Catholicism but I would never force it on them.
Charles I is unfit to be an absolute ruler.
I have ultimately given you every reason why you should choose me to be the ruler of your
glorious country. I know I have the capability to be the best ruler you have ever seen. I assure
you that the time that I spend with your country will not be wasted. I will make your country as
wonderful and significant as possible just as I have done with many other countries.
Sincerely,
Philip II of Spain
