Pastors Corner
In this season of bitterly cold nights, it is a very good thing to pray for those in our community
who are unsheltered or have minimal shelter. Even better, to both pray and act to help those
in greatest need. There are two ways we can tangibly do so later this month. First, we host
Family Promise here at ESUMC the week of January 22. This means that the bedding and
personal effects arrive here that Sunday afternoon and are distributed among our Sunday
School classrooms downstairs in the main building. The families served by Family Promise
arrive later in the afternoon for dinner and are here for 7 consecutive nights. They are picked
up each morning in vans and taken to the Family Promise day center, from which they go off
to jobs and schools.

There are two big needs when we host Family Promise: people to stay overnight in the church building, and
people to make meals for the families. Having been a part of both activities myself, I can tell you that each are
deeply meaningful and not as large an effort as I had imagined before participating. Staying overnight simply
means staying in the building from about 9 pm to 6 am the following morning. Each of the families have their
own bedrooms, and the hosts stay in a different room on large, comfortable air mattresses. Other than getting
up a little earlier than I normally do, I had as restful a nights sleep as I do at home last time we hosted.
Providing a meal is a little more labor intensive, but basically involves making a larger family meal than normal
and making sure to find out about allergies and the like from the guest families. Karen and I have found that
the guests are deeply appreciative of the home-cooked meals weve provided, and weve enjoyed eating with
the families on several occasions, not simply dropping off the meals to them. If you havent done either of
these activities in the past, I urge you to volunteer and to contact coordinator Jenn Dunne at your earliest
convenience. Jenn can be contacted at: dunnejl2@gmail.com or by phone at: 570-369-3695.
(Continued on page 2)

(Continued from page 1)

I mentioned two things we can do, overall. The second event involving
the homeless occurs the week after Family Promise. Since the Wesleyan
Church in Stroudsburg also hosts Family Promise for a week, they need
another church to temporarily take over the Cold Weather Shelter
provided in Monroe County every year from November 1 to March 31.
The Wesleyan Church hosts Family Promise the week following our
week, and therefore we will bring the Cold Weather Shelter here to assist
them, as weve done for the past two winters.
There is no food involved in this ministry; we simply provide shelter from
10 pm to 6 am in our Fellowship Hall. We need a minimum of four adults
to stay with our guests. Please contact Ana Price if interested:
argenfishing@yahoo.com or by phone at: 570-460-8423. Lets put our
faith into action this January, and fulfill Matthew 25:35-36, where Jesus
says, for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave
me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was
naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I
was in prison and you visited me.

A new year..
A new resolution..

Resolve to give your burdens to

the Lord,
and He will take care of you

On Sunday, January 29 following the conclusion of the 10:45 am

worship service, there will be a specially-called church conference,
authorized and led by District Superintendent, Dr. Irving Cotto. The three
-fold purpose of the Church Conference is to:

1. Formally approve the 2017 pastoral compensation package.

2. Elect persons to leadership positions, who though nominated, are
not yet elected.
3. Vote on a new vision statement and statement of beliefs for our
church (which will be provided to the congregation ahead of time).

In addition to our Superintendent leading the church conference, he will

also preach at both services that Sunday. A reminder about voting in our

Oneness Embraced by Tony Evans

Ken Brown & Bob Rosenberger

Black/white relations in the culture at large and

in the church in particular continue to be a
stain on America's respectable reputation. The
church has clearly failed and must seek to
function by God's kingdom perspective. In this
legacy message, Tony Evans seeks to
promote a biblical understanding of the
kingdom foundation of oneness by detailing
why we don't have it, what we need to do to
get it, and what it will look like when we live it.

Grace by Max Lucado

We talk as though we understand the term.

The bank gives us a grace period. The seedy
politician falls from grace. Musicians speak of
a grace note. We describe an actress as
gracious, a dancer as graceful. We use the
word for hospitals, baby girls, kings, and
premeal prayers. We talk as though we know
what grace means.

FamilyLife's Weekend to Remember

is coming to the Pocono's
April 28-30, 2017.
What is a Weekend to Remember?
Weekend to Remember is a two-and-a-half
day (Friday night - Sunday) weekend
getaway that equips married and engaged
couples with practical tools and resources.
You will receive biblically-based insights
from top speakers and marriage experts, helpful tools, special breakout
sessions, workbooks, and relaxing alone time to rediscover the reasons
you fell in love, free from distractions.
Weekend to Remember is not just for married couples. They provide
engaged couples with the understanding on how to create a firm
foundation to build your future married relationship.
Even if you have attended in the past, It's way too easy to slip back into
the trap of taking each other for granted. Great marriages require
intentionality and investmentjust like a garden that must be watered
in order to grow. Dont just survive, discover a marriage that THRIVES!
For more information, please contact Ann or Bruce Osbun who are
volunteer coordinators for Family Life. They will have a table set up in
fellowship hall.

Ephesians by J.D. Greear

Deanna Mayers

Has it ever dawned on you that nothing has

ever dawned on God? He knew before the
world began that His people would face
hardship, so He gave us His Word. The Book
of Ephesians is a survival manualit equips
believers to thrive in a world that hates the
message of Jesus Christ. Paul the Apostle
writes to encourage believers to live well
we've been lifted from the graveyard of sin and
called to shout the gospel into the darkened
world.

New Members Class

Pastor Todd et. al.

There are five sessions for those wishing to

become a member of East Stroudsburg United
Methodist Church. Those attending will be
given a book, I Am a Church Member, by
Thom Rainer, and the book will be our guide to
explore different aspects of the Christian faith
and church membership. We will look at the
basics of our faith, gain a thumbnail sketch of
church history, look at the structure of our
denomination and our own local church, and
explore different areas of ministry involvement
based on spiritual giftedness. Finally, we will
take a good look at the five commitments
made when a person becomes a member of a
United Methodist Church. . Please note: this
class does not begin until January 29,
2017.

Drop Off for artists work is January 10th1-6 P.M.
