SENSORY SYSTEM

In this lesson we will learn the following:

• The structure of the sensory system.
• The function of the sensory system.
• The spiritual lessons of this system.

When God was deciding to form man from clay

He realized that senses would guide in his way
Only learning of God through the signals received
Trusting them wholly, though were one day deceived
As the tempter came stalking in the guise of a snake
Endeavoring to cover his identity and fake
The eyes of the woman to believe in his lie
Of which would so lead them to perish and die
Waiting his chance for the time and the place
To ensnare in his trap and plummet the race
In the strongholds of sin that he longed to impart
And tare them away from their God in their heart
Seeing Eve come to the tree that God told
"Don't go very near and venture too bold"
But dismissing his words as she beheld it looked nice
"Did God really mean what He said," thought she twice
Seeing his chance had arrived he did speak
And was melodious in tone, gentle and meek
"Has God said you should not eat of fruit of this tree
You won’t really die just watch and see me"
Then taking a big bite of the fruit that she saw
That smelt just divine though a curse in it bore
Standing amazed as the serpent did eat
Delighting in fruit that he said was a treat
That God didn't want her and Adam to try
And so wished to deprive them by telling a lie
Convinced of his story she took in her hand
Feeling the fruit while the snake did demand
"Eat of it Eve, and then a god you will be
And wiser in wisdom and beauty you see
Forgetting the words that God did command
She partook of the fruit and plucked with her hand
Another for Adam for the joy that would come
To her dearest of friends though her senses were numb
Believing the woman Adam partook of it too
So God came then looking to tell what was true
Then God gave His Word as an absolute must
To help us to see, in what we can trust
THE STRUCTURE OF THE SENSORY SYSTEM:

Because there are several organs in the sensory system that we need to closely look at, we will in this lesson be
discussing them individually as we cover each organ. The special sense organs that this lesson will be
discussing are: The eye, ear, and taste receptors.

It was through the organs of senses that Satan found his way into the lives and hearts of men. First the serpent
talked to Eve, appealing to her ears, then he was very attractive in appearance, deceiving her eyes, then handing
her the fruit for Eve to touch, feeling good to her touch, which would have made the aroma of that fruit more
fragrant to her nose. This ultimately led her to place it in her mouth, tantalizing her taste buds, which resulted in
her fall and plunged mankind into the jaws of death.

If you look at the sanctuary you will discover that there were five pillars that stood at the entrance of the Holy
place, the tabernacle itself we have discovered is representative of the brain. Could it be that the five pillars are
representative of the five senses, which give entrance to the throne room of God, the brain. You make up your
own mind.

The special senses - smell, taste, sight, hearing, and equilibrium - have receptor organs that are structurally more
complex than receptors for general sensations. The sense of smell is the least specialized. Like the general
senses, however, the special senses allow us to detect changes in our environment.

CLASSIFICATION OF SENSE:

The sense organs are often classified as special sense organs, and general sense organs. The general sense
organs for detecting stimuli such as pain and touch are microscopic receptors widely distributed throughout the
body.

There are several types of receptors in the body, and they are classified according to the types of stimuli that
activate them. God has placed different kinds of receptors throughout our body for us to experience different
sensations and experiences. He has placed receptors in the retina of the eye called photoreceptors for us to see,
chemoreceptors in the mouth and nose for us to taste and smell; thermoreceptors for us to feel changes in the
temperature, pain receptors to warn us about injury; and pleasure receptors that give us enjoyment from the
touch of a loved one.

When Adam and Eve sinned they had a change take place in their receptors, as they experienced the temperature
change, and went to make a covering. They also experienced pain which in the world to come will not be felt
again. "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor
crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away." Rev 21.4

CONVERTING A STIMULUS INTO A SENSATION:

All of the sense organs, regardless of size, type, or location, have in common some important functional
characteristics. First, they must be able to sense or detect a stimulus in their surroundings. Of course, different
sense organs detect different types of stimuli. Whether it is light, sound, temperature change, mechanical
pressure, or the presence of chemicals identified as taste or smell, the stimulus must be changed into an
electrical signal or nerve impulse. The signal is then transmitted over the nervous system "pathway" to the
brain, where the sensation is actually perceived.

All stimuli are led ultimately to the brain, a d therefore the brain has the incredible task of selecting only those
stimuli that are the most important to come to our notice. As It would be too much information otherwise for
the conscious to deal with at one given moment in time, as millions of bits of information per minute are taken
to the subconscious.
It is very important for us to interpret those important messages that come to us every day in the correct manner,
just as it is for us to rightly interpret the meaning of God's Word. Just as the physical receptors are for our
admonition, so too is the spiritual perceptions that the Holy Spirit speaks to us every day. Sometimes the
reception of these signals gets a bit dulled by our own life of sin, and God has to use stronger methods to get
through to us. At other times He may speak to us, as also He did with Elijah in a still small voice, 1King.19.12.

God speaks through nature to our eye senses of His message of love. Then He sent teachers and preachers for us
to read and hear of that love . Then He sends His Holy Spirit for us to feel His love. The flowers around cause
us to smell of His love, and the Word of God is for us to taste of and see that the Lord is good. What more
could God do to appeal to our senses that God is love and in Him is life?

From studying this system we will learn that the organs of sense represent the avenues of the soul that God
created us with to perceive the love of God which passeth all understanding. "That he would grant you,
according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; That Christ
may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with
all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth
knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fullness of God.:" Eph.3.16-19
THE EYE:
The eyeball lies nestled in fat within the orbital cavities (two
bony sockets) of the skull, where it is situated above and
lateral to the center. Of all the senses, eyesight is often
considered most important. According to one estimate,
four-fifths of everything we know reaches the brain through
our eyes. The eyes transmit constant streams of images to
the brain by electrical signals.

The eyes receive information from light rays. The light rays are either absorbed or reflected. Objects that
absorb all of the light rays appear black, whereas those that reflect all the light rays appear white.

Colored objects absorb certain parts of the light spectrum and reflect others. When you look at refracted by the
cornea and passes through the watery fluid and pupil to the lens. The iris controls the amount of light entering
the eye. Then the lens focuses the light through the vitreous humor onto the retina, forming an image in reverse
and upside down. Light-sensitive cells in the retina transmit the image to the brain by electrical signals. The
brain "sees" the image right side up.

The eye is incredibly designed and we have still much to learn about the eye, and how it
works. Ask someone you know who doesn't believe in God how the eye came about by
evolution, and chances are you will get a blank expression on their face. It takes a lot more
faith to believe in evolution than it does in creation. If evolution were true, how did the eye
with all its intricate and sophisticated parts develop? What good is the eye unless it is
complete with all its necessary structures, such as the rods, cones, nerves, pupil, aqueous humor, blood vessels,
etc.

In other words you have to have it form all at once or it is impossible

for the eye to be of any useful function to anyone or anything. Let's look at our physiology text book, the Bible,
and learn about the fascinating marvel of creation the eye.

THE EYES OF THE LORD ARE IN EVERY PLACE Pro.15.3 WHEN CHRIST RETURNS EVERY EYE SHALL SEE HIM Rev.1.7
In the Bible the eyes are often symbolized to denote our spiritual eyesight. If we see the truth and believe it we
are the children of light, John.12.36. If not, we are the children of darkness, for scripture says: "But if thine eye
be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness, If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is
that darkness!" Matt.6.23.

There is hope however for those who are in spiritual darkness, because Jesus came, "To give light to them that
sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace." Luke.1.79 And how do we
get our spiritual eyes filled with light? "When thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light”;
Luke.11.34. Single to what? The glory of God!!!

"Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness." Luke.11.35 "If thy whole body therefore
be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle doth
give thee light." Luke.11.36. "In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in
darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not." John.1.4,5. "And this is the condemnation, that light is come
into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil." John.3.19

"Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in
darkness, but shall have the light of life." John.8:12 "Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light
with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth
not whither he goeth. John.12.35. "I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not
abide in darkness." John.12.46. GET THE PICTURE!!!

When the eye is not the right shape, the light rays get distorted and the image is blurred. If the person can see
good at short distances and blurry at long distances, the person is said to be short sighted. If however they can
see good at long distances and blurry at short distances the person is said to be far sighted.

A person who is far sighted spiritually is one who has their eyes fixed upon heavenly realities, to a place that
lies afar off. "For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country." Matt.25.14. "Thine eyes
shall see the king in his beauty: they shall behold the land that is very far off." Isa.33.17. A person who has
lustful eyes on the things of this earth is short sighted and is of the world. "For all that is in the world, the lust of
the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world." 1John.2.16

There was a man called Nebuchadnezzar, who was king of Babylon, the greatest earthly empire ever established
by mortal man, that has not been matched since. The king was a very proud man, and was out walking one day,
admiring the splendor of his kingdom’s wealth and beauty, and was lifted up with pride at the sight of what to
him was the result of his own strength. Let's here the king’s own words. "The king spake, and said, Is not this
great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power, and for the honor of my
majesty? While the word was in the king's mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, saying, O king
Nebuchadnezzar, to thee it is spoken; The kingdom is departed from thee. And they shall drive thee from men,
and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field: they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen, and seven times
shall pass over thee, until thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to
whomsoever he will. The same hour was the thing fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar: and he was driven from
men, and did eat grass as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hairs were grown like
eagles' feathers, and his nails like birds' claws. And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up mine
eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the most High, and I praised and
honoured him that liveth for ever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is from
generation to generation:” Dan.4.30-34.

What has this got to do with eyes you may ask? Well the eyes of Nebuchadnezzar were upon his earthly empire,
in other words his vision was earthly, on earthly things. Notice however that those earthly things were taken
away from him, and he became like a beast of the field. This is exactly what happens to us when we have our
eyes upon earthly things; we are carnal in nature. However when he lifted up his eyes to heaven, (when he
became far sighted) his understanding, (spiritual understanding) returned, and he praised and honored the God
of heaven.
BLINDNESS:

There are two types of blindness that we are going to talk about, physical blindness and spiritual blindness, the
worst condition being the latter. Blindness is something that an individual can be born with, develop with age,
or can be due to an accident causing mechanical damage.

When Eve was in the garden alone with the tempter, he made the statement, "For God doth know that in the day
ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil." Gen.3.5. The
devil was subtly trying to convince Eve that she was spiritually blind, and by eating the forbidden fruit she
would be enlightened. But to those who are spiritually blind the Devil tries to convince them that they can see,
but there is still hope for them if they heed the admonition of the Most High: "...Anoint thine eyes with
eyesalve, that thou mayest see." Rev.3.18. The eyesalve is the Holy Spirit.

It was not God's plan for man’s eyes to go blind, even in the physical sense. "And Moses was an hundred and
twenty years old when he died: his eye was not dim, nor his natural force abated." Deut.34.7. Man's eyes would
have been perfect in the beginning but due to sin, man's vision became corrupted in both the physical and
spiritual realm. In the new earth, man will have his vision back to that perfect sight he lost from Eden, "Then the
eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped." Isa.35.5.

When Jesus took up His ministry His first recorded sermon in the synagogue referred to the work He was to do
for the blind: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor;
he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the
blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised." Luke.4.18.

Jesus soon after proceeded to fulfil the words that He spoke by demonstrating this in practice. "Now when John
had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples, And said unto him, Art thou he that
should come, or do we look for another? Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and show John again those
things which ye do hear and see: The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and
the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them." Matt.11.2-5.

Let's see how sight was given to the blind: "And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him,
crying, and saying, Thou son of David, have mercy on us. And when he was come into the house, the blind men
came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord.
Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you." Matt.9.27-29. It was by faith that
the man's eyes were open, and it is by faith that we receive spiritual sight as well.

It is also in the church that Jesus gave spiritual sight: "And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple;
and he healed them." Matt.21.14. If Jesus is in a church then His Spirit can touch the eyes of the spiritually
blind that they may see the truth and be healed of their sins.

Another time Jesus spat on a man's eyes who was blind and he received sight, symbolizing the anointing of the
heavenly eyesalve, the Holy Spirit. "And he cometh to Bethsaida; and they bring a blind man unto him, and
besought him to touch him. And he took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the town; and when he
had spit on his eyes, and put his hands upon him, he asked him if he saw ought. And he looked up, and said, I
see men as trees, walking. After that he put his hands again upon his eyes, and made him look up: and he was
restored, and saw every man clearly." Mark.8.22-25.

Notice that the first time Jesus touched his eyes he saw men as trees, but the second time when he looked up he
was restored and saw every man clearly. What made the difference? It was the fact that he looked up,
symbolizing looking up to heaven from whence cometh our spiritual sight.
Before we can receive our spiritual sight we need to acknowledge that we can't see, and we have been blind to
our condition and to our sins. Then the next step is to say as did Bartimaeus, when Jesus asked him what he
should do unto him: "The blind man said unto him, Lord, that I might receive my sight." Mark.10.51. Then
like Bartimaeus we are made whole and follow in the way of Jesus. Mark.10.52.

Let us take a look at those people who were truly blind, who saw not their blindness. When Jesus was on the
earth He only called one type of person truly blind, that was the Pharisee.

"Woe unto you, ye blind guides," Matt.23.16.

"Ye fools and blind:" Matt.23.17.
"Ye fools and blind:" Matt.23.19.
"Ye blind guides," Matt.23.24.
"Thou blind Pharisee," Matt.23.26.

Why did Jesus call them blind? It was because they couldn't see and believe the truth - they didn't have faith
which would open up their spiritual eyes and lead them to eternal life.

There was a man that was born blind, who was healed by Jesus through anointing of the eyes, and was taken to
the Pharisees to be diagnosed, "...The Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto
them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see. Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is
not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such
miracles? And there was a division among them. They say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him,
that he hath opened thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet. But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he
had been blind, and received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight."
John.9.15-18.

The blind Pharisee found it hard to see that the blind man could see, and so it is today, for no greater blindness
can cover the eyes of one who thinks they see the truth but perceives it not. Jesus says: "As long as I am in the
world, I am the light of the world." John.9.5. If we don't therefore look to the Light we will abide in darkness,
and not see our true condition. went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing.” John 9:7

How can we know if we are spiritually blind? The Bible tells us: And beside this, giving all diligence, add to
your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to
patience godliness; And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. For if these things
be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord
Jesus Christ. But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was
purged from his old sins." 2Pet.1.5-9

BELIEVING IS NOT JUST IN SEEING:

We are living in a time when Satan will be performing miracles. Read closely the following text. “And he doeth
great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men.” Rev.13.13.

Have you heard the saying ‘I will see it when I believe it,’ This is how most people will follow the beast, listen
to the following: “And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had
power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to
the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.” Rev.13.14.

“Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. And when he had fasted forty
days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungered. And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the
Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not
live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Then the devil taketh him up
into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God,
cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall
bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou
shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and showeth
him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; And saith unto him, All these things will I give
thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written,
Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. Matt.4.1-10

When the Devil came to Jesus he did not come without a disguise. He came as an angel of light, “And no
marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.” 2Cor.11.14. The only way that Christ knew that
he was an imposter was from the written Word of God, “It is written,” was the guide of His life. Friend, we will
soon be faced with a similar deception as was Jesus, when our eyes behold miracles from those who do not
follow a “Thus saith the Lord.” Let us not be deceived but become acquainted with His Word now that we not
be snared with the world.

Men who have been working in coal mines for long periods of time get accustomed to the darkness of the
environment. Coming straight out of that environment into the full light of the sun can blind them, causing
permanent damage to the retina.

Just as it takes time for your eye to adjust to the light, so too does it take time for a person to adjust spiritually to
the light of God's Word. If we flood a person with so much light all at once we can in fact turn them away from
the light and they can become blinded to the truth, and be in a worse condition than they were if they knew
nothing of the truth to start with. It behooves us therefore to be careful with those who are just coming out of
darkness to exercise caution against flooding someone with so much information that they haven't got enough
time to make adjustments to that light.

THE EAR:
The ear is divided into three parts:
the outer ear, the middle ear, and
the inner ear. Each section
performs its own separate function
in a process that converts sound
waves into nerve impulses, which
are then transmitted to the brain.
The outer ear has two parts; the
pinna and the external auditory
canal. The outer ear collects and
channels sound. The middle ear ,
or tympanic cavity, is a tiny cavity
hollowed out of the temporal bone.
It is an intermediary in the
processing of sound energy.

It is responsible for increasing the intensity of incoming sound waves and transforming them into mechanical
vibrations that can easily travel through the inner ear. The inner ear has two parts. One is made of bone, the
other of a membrane that lies inside the bone. Both have complicated shapes, and for this reason they are called
labyrinths. Each labyrinth has three parts: vestibule, semicircular canals, and cochlea. The inner ear contains
the receptor cells, which receive the mechanical vibrations and transmit them to the brain.

COCHLEA: The cochlea is a minute, bony,

spiral-shaped tube of two canals and a duct

Why does the cochlear look like a snail?

Click on the picture for Bible clue.
subdivided by a thin partition called the
cochlear partition, which runs the entire length
of the spiral. The basilar membrane lies on
one side of the partition and the vestibular
membrane lies on the other side. Sound
vibrations reaching the inner ear are
transmitted through the fluid of the cochlear
canals (the tympanic canal and the vestibular
canal) and around the cochlear duct which
divides them. As the pressure of the waves
flows over the basilar membrane, which is the
vibrating wall of the cochlear duct, the fluid
inside the duct is agitated. This movement of
the fluid stimulates the organ of corti, which
sits on the membrane inside the cochlear
partition.

The organ of corti is a hearing sense organ and performs the actual transformation of mechanical vibrations into
nerve impulses. It has a gelatinous membrane and two sets of hair cells (receptor hair cells). The two sets of
receptor hair cells, the inner and outer receptor cells, are located between the basilar and gelatinous membrane
of the organ of corti. When the basilar membrane vibrates it pushes the hair cells against the gelatinous
membrane, causing the hair cells to produce a chemical that converts the movement into electrical impulses
which are transmitted to the adjacent nerve fibers. There are approximately 30,000 nerve fibers in each ear
transmitting signals to both the brain stem and the brain's auditory cortex.

Did you get the answer to the question of the cochlear? What does the snail remind us of but a slow creature.
Could it be that man is slow to hear that which God hath spoken? You make up your own mind, but God asks
of our ears the opposite, "Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear…" James.1.19.

CONCHA: The concha is the deep, bowl-shaped part of the ear cartilage that attaches directly to the side of the
head at the front of the mastoid process of the skull. The opening to the auditory canal is located in the lower
front corner of the concha. The concha helps funnel sound into the auditory canal.

The bowl that the concha can be likened to, are the two bowls of the chapiters that were upon the pillars of the
temple that king Solomon made, which had the pomegranates on top of it. "And four hundred pomegranates for
the two networks, even two rows of pomegranates for one network, to cover the two bowls of the chapiters that
were upon the pillars;" King.7.42. The pomegranates are likened to the word of God, for they contain many
seeds and have a blood red flesh. "The seed is the word of God." Luke.8.11. It is the word of God (represented
by the pomegranates) that we are to have upon the 2 bowls (the concha, which is that part of the ear that is
shaped like a bowl and receives the word).

EUSTACHIAN TUBE: The eustachian tube is a narrow channel about 1 1/2 inches (4 centimeters) long,
which connects the middle ear with the throat. The opening is located in the pharyngeal portion of the nose
(back of the throat). The tube travels upward and back and to the side of the ear and enters the floor of the
middle ear. The eustachian tube assures that air pressure inside and outside the middle ear remains identical. It
normally is closed, but opens whenever a person yawns or swallows to protect the delicate parts of the ear from
abrupt changes in the air pressure. If the two air pressures are different, the eardrum will not respond correctly
to the pressure fluctuations of sound waves.

If we do not respond spiritually to the changing pressures that come from within and without our ears will not be
able to respond to the movements of the Holy Spirit.
EXTERNAL AUDITORY CANAL: The auditory canal is visible externally from the ear. It is an air-filled
cavity about one inch in length that ends at the tympanic membrane (eardrum). It also protects the middle ear
by keeping out foreign objects.

God wants to keep our ears from all foreign objects that are going to cause damage to us. "I have sent also unto
you all my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them, saying, Return ye now every man from his
evil way, and amend your doings, and go not after other gods to serve them, and ye shall dwell in the land which
I have given to you and to your fathers: but ye have not inclined your ear, nor hearkened unto me." Jer.35.15.
But this is not the case with those who hear the Word and receive it. "And these are they which are sown on
good ground; such as hear the word, and receive it, and bring forth fruit, some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some
an hundred." Mark.4.20

HELIX: The helix ring is the uppermost portion of the ear and forms the rim of the outer ear. The inner curved
prominence that lies parallel to the helix is the antihelix. It also borders the back and top of the concha. The
helix and antihelix are composed of cartilage. The outer ear is composed of a single piece of cartilage, with the
exception of the lobule.

INCUS (ANVIL), MALLEUS (HAMMER) & STAPES: The auditory ossicles (the incus, malleus, and
stapes) are the bones of the middle ear. Their Latin names describe their shapes. The incus is shaped like an
anvil, and is likened to the Bible, it will endure the mightiest blows from man. "The Bible is an anvil that has
worn out many hammers." GC.288. The malleus is shaped like a hammer, and also represents the word that
breaks the rock, “Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in
pieces?” Jer.23.29.

The inner ear, where lies the stapes, incus

Our hearts our the rock, that the word breaks in
and Malleus pieces. Lastly the stapes is shaped like a stirrup,
stirrups are used for the rider to place his feet upon,
“I have refrained my feet from every evil way, that I
might keep thy word.” Psa.119.101, and to balance
his in the saddle, as well as motivating the horse to
move. The Word of God is what God wants us to
stand on, to balance our feet as we ride through this
troubled life, to prevent us from falling, and
motivate us to move in direction of His Word.

They are the smallest bones in the human body. The three bones are connected
to each other by hinges and act as mechanical levers to carry and push the vibrations of the eardrum forward to
the flexible membrane of the oval window. When sound waves cause the tympanic membrane to vibrate, the
vibrations move the malleus (hammer), which in turn moves the incus (anvil). The incus moves the stapes
(stirrups) which is attached to the oval window. The sound is then passed to the inner ear. The leverage of the
middle ear bones increase the intensity of the sound wave by 5 decibels before the wave is funneled toward the
oval window.

Just as there are three auditory bones of the middle ear that are responsible for carrying sound waves to our
eardrum, we also have three powers that are responsible for carrying the spiritual messages to our ear - the
heavenly trio, the Godhead. They are all inseparable and closely connected together to carry forward to our ear
the plan of salvation. “He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches;” Rev.2.17.

LOBULE: The earlobe, or lobule, is a part of the outer ear that lies (hangs) below the tragus. It is composed of
tough areolar and adipose tissue (soft, fatty tissue). This part of the outer ear is not made of cartilage.
OVAL WINDOW: The oval window is a part of the middle ear. It is 20 times smaller than the tympanic
membrane and has liquid on its inner side. The middle ear converts the amplified sound waves from the ossicles
into mechanical vibrations which are efficiently transferred through the liquid of the inner ear.

Just as hearing relies on sound waves being carried through a liquid medium, so too does it require the
movement of the Holy Spirit for us to spiritually hear the voice of God speaking to us. The Bible has a lot to
say about the ear, as it is the organ that receives the Word of God, communicating to the brain the messages that
flow through it.

SMELL:
Out of all the special senses - smell, taste, sight, hearing, and equilibrium, the sense of smell is the least
specialized, as opposed to the sense of sight which is the most specialized.
Smell is some 10,000 times more acute than our sense
of taste. In fact, most food flavors are smelt, not
tasted, as anyone with a heavy cold will verify. Nasal
congestion prevents the little eddies of air, stirred up
by the action of chewing and swallowing, from
reaching the receptors in the roof of the nasal cavity.
Nasal air cavities Human smell receptors distinguish several thousand
different types of smell. Some people have a better
sense of smell than others. The nose also plays an
important role in conditioning the inspired air for the
lower respiratory tract. This conditioning includes:
the control of temperature, the control of humidity,
and the elimination of dust and infectious organisms.

The sinuses are air-filled cavities within the skull bones, joined by openings to the main airway inside the nose.
Four pairs of sinuses (the frontal, the maxillary, the sphenoidal, the ethmoidal) drain into the nasal cavities. The
maxillary are the largest sinuses. They extend from the floor of the orbits to the roots of the upper teeth. The
sinuses are lined with mucous membrane, which becomes infected whenever you have a cold. The sinuses fill
with mucous causing that "stuffed-up" feeling and sometimes pain. Sinus infections often develop from colds.

The nasopharynx is the top part of the pharynx (throat) extending from the back of the nose to the level of the
soft palate. The pharynx continues to the esophagus which continues to the stomach. The continual lining of
mucous membrane helps filter bacteria and foreign particles from the inspired air and carries them down to the
stomach.

It wasn’t necessary for life for God to give man a sense of smell, but it was created for man’s pleasure to enjoy
things such as smelling the aromas of beautiful flowers that God created to be admired. Without the sense of
smell we couldn’t even enjoy our food, for smell enhances the taste of food flavors. Just think how blessed you
and I are to have the sense of smell, not to mention that it adds to the beauty of the face. I think you would
agree, that we would look pretty strange without a nose on our face and beside this your glasses would have
nothing to keep them in place.

Structure of Receptors:

The receptors for the olfactory sense are located in the nasal epithelium in the superior portion of the nasal
cavity on either side of the nasal septum. One of three principle kinds of cells in the nasal epithelium is the
olfactory cells. At the far free end this olfactory cell contains a dendrite that terminates in a swelling (olfactory
vesicle) from which radiate 6-8 cilia (hairs). These hairs are believed to react to odors in the air and then they
stimulate the olfactory cells, thus initiating the olfactory response.

Within the connective tissue beneath the olfactory cell are olfactory (Bowman’s) glands that produce mucus,
which is carried to the surface of the epithelium by ducts. The secretion moistens the surface of the olfactory
epithelium and serves as a solvent for odiferous substances. The continuous secretion of mucus also serves to
freshen the surface film of fluid and prevents continuous stimulation of olfactory hairs by the same odor.

Stimulation of Receptors:

In order for a substance to be smelt it must be volatile, that is, capable of entering into a gaseous state so that the
gaseous particles can enter the nostrils. The substance to be smelt must be water - soluble so that it can dissolve
in the mucus to make contact with olfactory cells. The substance must also be lipid-soluble. Since the plasma
membranes of olfactory hairs are largely lipid, the substance to be smelt must be dissolved in the lipid -
covering to make contact with olfactory hairs in order to initiate an impulse. Recent data suggest there may be
as many as 50 or more primary sensations of smell.
Spiritual lesson: Taken from Genesis 27-.Isaac was getting old and before he died he wanted to bestow his
birthright upon Esau (the eldest son) and so he called for Esau and asked him to go and get him some venison to
eat, and then he would bless him. Rebekah overheard Isaac’s command to Esau and plotted with her son Jacob
to disguise himself as his brother and receive the blessing in his stead, as Isaac’s eyes were dim.

In order to deceive his father he placed upon himself Esau’s coat which smelt like the field. Isaac only had three
senses with which to perceive from, his ears detected he was Jacob, but his touch and nose detected it was Esau.
It was 2 against 1 and he was led to be deceived. This lesson teaches us that senses can deceive us and allow
Satan to set a snare for our feet.

Science has shown that the sense of smell is very intimately connected with the subconscious and certain smells
can trigger past emotions, experiences, and memories, for good or for evil. Let us therefore avoid those smells
that we know can trigger negative emotions, and separate us from the love of God.

TASTE:
Taste buds are microscopic onion-shaped
Taste buds
clusters of cells buried in the epidermal cell
layer of the papilla, but do not protrude
above the surface. The taste buds contain
receptor cells that signal information about
taste characteristics to the central nervous
system. Each taste bud consists of about
thirty to eighty nonnervous cells, many of
which are connected to nerve endings.
These cells sense the contents of the mouth
via small, narrow gustatory pores. Taste
buds are composed of three different types of
cells. The type one cell, also called the dark
cell, constitutes 60 to 80% of the cell total.
It is believed by many researchers that these are not sensory cells, but act as a supporting system for the other
cells. The type two cells (light cells), which constitute 15 to 30% of the cell total, and the type three cells,
which constitute 7 to 14%, are considered the true taste receptors. Taste buds are not confined to the tongue. A
thin scattering of taste buds can be found in many parts of the mouth's mucous membrane, including the
epiglottis, pharynx, larynx, soft palate, and uvula. There are also taste buds on the upper third of the esophagus.
These allow us to taste food as it is being swallowed. Altogether, the average adult has about 10,000 taste buds.

The different papilla on the tongue show some area-specific patterns of taste selectivity. There are four basic
tastes: sweet, sour, salt, and bitter. The flavors that we taste are actually combinations of the four tastes. The
sides of the tongue tend to be sensitive to sour and salt closer to the apex (tip). The tip tends to be sensitive to
sweet, while the back of the tongue is most sensitive to bitter. The common experience that some sweet
substances, such as saccharin, have a bitter aftertaste is partly a result of the area-specific patterns of taste. The
sweet taste is experienced first, at the tip of the tongue, but is mixed with bitterness as the substance moves
toward the back of the tongue.

Unfortunately we live in a world where appetite governs the decisions we make about what we eat. Most people
are more concerned with whether it is good to the taste buds without reference to whether or not it is good to the
body. The taste has become perverted and I don’t think I would be wrong in saying that we are tempted more
on our taste buds than on any other part of the body.

“Many are made sick by the indulgence of their appetite. They eat what suits their perverted taste, thus
weakening the digestive organs, and injuring their power to assimilate the food that is to sustain life. . . . Thus
the delicate machinery is worn out by the suicidal practices of those who ought to know better. Sin indeed lies at
the door. The door is the mouth.” HL.074.

The question we might ask is then “what do we need to do to change our perverted taste buds?”

“If they cannot at first enjoy plain food, they should fast until they can. That fast will prove to them of greater
benefit than medicine, for the abused stomach will find the rest which it has long needed, and real hunger can
be satisfied with a plain diet. It will take time for the taste to recover from the abuses it has received, and to
gain its natural tone. But perseverance in a self-denying course of eating and drinking will soon make
plain, wholesome food palatable, and it will be eaten with greater satisfaction than the epicure enjoys over
his rich dainties.” HL.93.

Please don’t think that I am saying that food is not to be tasty, no, no, far from it. Perverted tastes only deaden
the taste buds to the point that they can’t perceive the beautiful tastes that lay dormant to the perverted appetite.
Avoiding those damaging foods, will lead to enhancing the flavors of natural foods, so that a greater
appreciation of them will be experienced by the receiver. God wants us to enjoy the delicious tastes that He has
placed in the foods, but man has been working against God’s plan to so spice up and process the foods, that
plain foods are not appreciated any more.

Fasting gives the body time to adjust to normal, and cleanse the blood from the impurities that have been
flooding those blood vessels. It is not recommended to go on long fasts of just water, but to partake of fruit and
vegetable juices high in vitamins and minerals which assist nature in her efforts to heal the body.

“Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto
the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?” Gen.3.1. It was on the point of
appetite that the Devil led the human race into sin, and it is on the same point that he comes to us today. So
strong was the power of appetite upon the human race that Christ willingly fasted from all food for forty days.
Fortunately, He doesn’t ask us to fast for that long. However there are times when a fast is called for, and only
for our own good, to allow the body to repair damage that we have heaped upon it. Two or three days of juice
fasting is a good time for the body to fast, but this however is not for everybody, as each person is different.
Some can cope with more than others and have more vitality for their body to borrow.
TOUCH:
As most of the physiology of the touching watchman is covered in the Integumentary system and in the ‘Seven
Channels of Elimination’ we shall not say too much on it here.

When God said don’t touch He meant exactly that, and when man failed to obey the consequences were often
eternal.

God said “don’t touch the fruit lest ye die,”

But Eve did question and wonder why
So she felt the fruit and then she did eat
But death is all that she found for her meat
God said “touch not the ark, but then was a jolt
And Uzzah did touch and down came a bolt
God said, “touch not the prophets and do them no harm”
But instead they did kill them as it caused much alarm
God said “touch not the unclean, disease ridden pig!”
However they did eat it and their graves did they dig
God said “lay hold of my son, and don’t ask me why”
But instead they refused and choose to so die.
