4. Design of concrete mix M20 grade concrete :

The quantities of cement, fine and coarse aggregate and water for trial mixes were calculated as
per the procedure laid in hand book of concrete mix design SP 23 (S&T) 1982. No. provision
was kept while calculating the quantities of materials.

Accordingly,
Characteristics compressive strength required in the field at 28 days

=20.0 N/mm2

Target mean compressive strength required at 28 days

=20+1.65*4
=26.60N/mm2

Degree of workability required:

Environmental exposure:
Degree of quality control:
Degree of compaction

slump value = 65 mm
mild
fair
C.F. = 0.90

A number of trial concrete mixes for M20 grade concrete were cast. The details of mix
proportion considered for optimum values, water cement ratio and compressive strength of 150
mm size cube at 07 days are under.

On the basis of the test results as tabulated above, mix-1 gives compressive strength value as
31.45 N/mm2, which is very close to the target compressive strength value of 26.60N/mm 2 at 28
days for M20 grade concrete. Thus, mix no. recommended the strength requirement and is the
economical one it is therefore recommended that for M20 grade concrete, mix proportion, water
cement ratio and aggregate cement ratio and aggregate cement ratio corresponding to mix-1 may
be adopted.

The observed values of compressive strength and workability were based on the grading of the
material i.e cement and aggregate supplied to this office, the test result would be different and
may vary for the material of quality other than that of supplies material.

The minimum cement contents based on the prescribed limit of your organization or as per
standard code may be used, if required.
