Subject: CPD District 4 Elevated Carbon Monoxide
During the overnight shift, Cincinnati Police Department (CPD) employees working at District
4, 4150 Reading Road, began experiencing headaches and called the Fire Department at
approximately 6 a.m., who immediately responded, examined staff and checked for carbon
monoxide. The Fire Department detected elevated levels of carbon monoxide. No staff were
transported for additional medical attention,
Duke Energy was contacted, responded immediately and did not detect any natural gas leaks,
however they did detect elevated levels of carbon monoxide.
Carbon monoxide is generated through the process of burning fuel. Normal culprits are boilers,
furnaces, car engines and exhaust vents. The fact that the symptoms came on suddenly
indicate this problem newly developed overnight.
Presently, staff from the Department of Public Services (DPS) and the Cincinnati Fire
Department (CFD) are on scene determining the source of the elevated carbon monoxide. To
ensure their safety, staff working at District 4 were instructed to leave the building and will not
retumn to normal occupaney until the source of the elevated carbon monoxide is determined.
Plans are being made to ensure District 4 police work will continue at normal levels while the
current building is being evaluated.
Risk Management, DPS, CPD, CFD and my office are all involved in responding to this
incident and ensuring safe working environments for our staff.
