Dear Parents,
We are getting ready to embark on our study of Shakespeare in my English 9 Honors class. To
introduce the subject to my students I would like to show the movie Shakespeare in Love.
Though this movie is fictional it is a great introduction to the time period, the theatre, and to
Romeo and Juliet and Twelfth Night, the two Shakespeare plays we will be reading this
semester.
The film is rated R and thus requires your permission for me to show it to your student. The R
rating is the product of a brief bit of nudity that takes place during a scene which becomes the
inspiration for the character of Shakespeare to write the balcony and wedding scenes for the play
Romeo and Juliet.
If you are comfortable with your student seeing this film, please sign and return the attached
form. If you are not comfortable with your student seeing this film, please note this on the
attached form, return it to me, and your student will receive an alternate assignment and a place
in which to do the assignment on the days the class views the film. If you have any questions,
please feel free to contact me at ceh9090@lausd.net. Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Caroline Rhude
