DEVELOPING OF SCORING RUBRICS

Mentler suggested the different steps in developing rubrics used in the
assessment of performances, process, product, for classroom use, in his
article Designing Scoring Rubrics for Your Classroom. The information
for these procedures was compiled from various sources (Airasian, 2000
& 2001; Montgomery, 2001; Nitko 2001; Tombari and Borich 1999). The
steps were summarized and discussed, followed by presentations of two
sample scoring rubrics.
1. Reexamine the learning objectives to be addressed by the task.
2. Identify specific observable attributes that you want to see (as well
as those you dont want to see) your students demonstrate in their
product, process, or performance.
3. Brainstorm characteristics that describe each attribute.
4. Collect samples of student work that exemplify each level.
5. Revise the rubric, as necessary.

In assessment of student learning, I have gained a lot of methods and

strategies that will be an advantage for me as a future educator to use
them when I will be in the real field. Assessment for me is one of the
most necessary factors to learn being an aspiring teacher; for it gives
you the basic responsibility as a teacher; to know your students well. By
knowing, I am pertaining to the wholeness of your students; his/her
cognitive, level of thinking, psychomotor level and emotional level. What

they like, what they already know, what they dont, their strengths, and
weaknesses and so forth. Indeed, having these facts about your
students, it will be easier for me as a teacher to give them the
appropriate knowledge and test that will help them shape their
wholeness as a student/pupil and as a being.
Furthermore, assessment gives us, educators the opportunity to be an
effective educator. Why? For knowing your students well will be a big
advantage when teaching. They will learn according to their like.
Because you consider what they are, what they think of, what they like
and so forth.
As a teacher, the crucial part here is not knowing how to ASSESS your
students and so effectiveness as a teacher will be disregarded because
you dont know your students. So, in order to be an effective teacher,
your part as a teacher here is to assess your students one by one so it
will be easy for you to achieve what you have to achieve; to make them
gain and learn.
