Work Methodology
A. Welding Works & Repair of damaged galvanized surface

Surfaces and edges of steels to be welded shall be smooth, uniform

and free from galvanized paint.

The parts to be welded shall be brought into as close contact as is

practicable

Tack weld first the steels to be welded and check alignment according
to approved shop drawing.

After checking alignment as satisfactory, proceed to full welding of the

joint.

Remove any welding splatter and sharp edges by grinding.

Proceed to repair of damaged galvanized surface due to welding.

B. Repair of damaged hot-dipped galvanized steel surface Works:

The use of sprayed zinc is according to ASTM A780

Application of the coating material will be in the field.

C. Damage to galvanized surfaces is usually caused by:

Mishandling damages (scrapes & chipping)

Flaking edges
Localized bare spots

D. Repair methods
To repair mishandling damages (scrapes)

Method Statement

Clean the affected area with sand paper and smooth out
sharp edges.
Remove dust from specified area and build up the coating
with zinc compound.

To repair flaking edges due to welding

All flakes must be removed. Clean the area with sand paper
and smooth out the edges
Build-up the coating with zinc compound.

To repair bare spots

Each spot including welded joint must be grind to bare metal

and edges smoothen all round. Remove weld splatter and
spray with zinc compound.
If the bare spots are excessive or large, the damaged
galvanizing paint must be stripped off and re-galvanise by
spraying zinc compound.

3.0 Protective & Safety Equipment

Members of the construction team will be issued with the following personal
protective equipment (PPE):
