National

The Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) observed Vigilance Awareness week from 31st October
to 5th November, 2016 with the theme "Public participation in promoting Integrity and eradicating
Corruption. It is observed to promote probity in public life and to achieve a corruption free society,
observes Vigilance Awareness Week every year.

The sixth edition of the Sampriti-2016 joint military training exercise conducted between India and
Bangladesh at Tangail, Dhaka from 05 to 18 November 2016 in Bangladesh.

GST Council fixes 4-Level GST rate structure to be levied at multiple rates ranging from 0 percent to 28
percent. Nearly half of the consumer inflation basket including food grains, GST will be at 0 percent.
Lowest slab of 5 percent is for items of common consumption.

According to Supreme Court of India every voter has a fundamental right to know education
qualification of candidate, who has a duty not to lie about his or her academic past.

In breach of the programme code governing content in news channel, the Information and Broadcasting
Ministry of India ordered NDTV to go off air for a day. The order served on channel accuses channel of
revealing sensitive operational details such as location of ammunition depot, place where terrorists
were holed up, location of school and residential areas.

President Pranab Mukherjee visited Nepal on 5th Nov, 2016 over a "mission of friendship" to
strengthen the bilateral relationship and became the first Indian President to visit Nepal in 18 years.

For the first time, India has hosted the crucial global Tobacco Control Conference at Greater Noida on
Nov, 7th, 2016. This was the 7th Session of the Conference of Parties to World Health Organisation
Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. To reduce tobacco consumption India ratified the treaty
on February 27, 2005 and is obligated to comply with the treaty provisions and its guidelines.

Tobacco farmers from various States on 7th Nov, 2016, staged a protest at a World Health
Organisation global conference venue in Greater Noida. They were opposing the undemocratic way
of framing anti-tobacco policies.

Ministry of Tourism, Govt. of India has set Prime Minister Narendra Modi as its mascot of the
Incredible India campaign.

To promote islands as a year-long tourist destination and make the visitors aware of unity and
diversity aspect of the islanders the home stay project is being implemented by Andaman Nicobar
Islands.

At the estimated cost of the project is Rs. 10,000 crore, Railways have announced to reduce the journey
time between Delhi and Howrah and Mumbai by increasing the maximum speed of trains to 160 kmph.
Earlier, the Railways have introduced Gatimaan Express between Delhi and Agra that attains a peak
speed of 160 kmph.

On 7th November, 2016, both India and UK have decided to focus on greater cooperation to counter
illegal activities and terrorism. Now on annual strategic dialogue would be held to jointly deal with
issues like terrorism, organized crimes, visa and immigration matters.

On Nov 8, 2016, Indian Naval Ship Shardul arrived at Port Louis on a three day visit, to promote
maritime security in the Indian Ocean Region and to demonstrate Indias commitment to its ties with
Mauritius.

In every Parliamentary Constituency, the Centre has decided to open Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas
Kendra. These are set in order to provide requisite skill to people for getting employment abroad.

INS Mhadei flagged off by Rear Admiral Monty Khanna in Panaji on 9th November, 2016. The vessel is
scheduled to reach Cape Town on December 15. The boat will participate in the Cape to Rio Race
(Cape Town to Rio de Janeiro), which will start on December 26, 2016.

Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued a notice on November 9, 2016 making it
mandatory for carmakers to provide airbags, vehicle reverse gear sensors for child pedestrian safety,
speed-warning systems and seatbelt reminder system as standard equipment from October 2017.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked all Central varsities to take steps to ban junk
food on their campuses.

Supreme Court termed the Punjab Sutlej Yamuna Link Canal Land (Transfer of Proprietary Rights)
Bill in 2016 by the current Akali Dal government as unwarranted developments when the
Presidential Reference was still pending in the apex court. The 2016 Bill, which is yet to receive the
assent of the Governor, planned to give back to the farmers over 5000 acres acquired for the canal.

The Prime Minister visited Tokyo on 10th November for the India-Japan annual summit meeting after a
brief stopover in Thailand where he paid respects to the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

India lashed out at the World Bank over its decision to favour Pakistan on the Indus Water Treaty
dispute process over the Kishenganga and Ratle dam and hydropower projects. Junaid Ahmad has
taken over as the World Bank's new country director for India recently.

The Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation (MoDWS) organized a National Conclave of Women
Champions for Swachh Bharat Mission Gramin (SBM(G)) on 10th November to celebrate, recognize and
honor the efforts of women champions in rural sanitation.

The 4th Young Scientists Meet (YSM), organized by the Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied
Sciences (INMAS), New Delhi along with other Delhi based laboratories of the DRDO.

India on 11th Nov, 2016, signed a historic civilian nuclear deal with Japan during the annual bilateral
summit held in Tokyo. The agreement will allow Japan to supply nuclear reactors, fuel and
technology to India, which will be the first country that has not signed the Non-Proliferation Treaty to
have such a deal with Tokyo. India is the first non-member of the non-proliferation treaty (NPT) to have
signed such a deal with Japan.

The aircraft carrier, INS Vikramaditya, has successfully completed its first routine maintenance (a 43-day
short refit) at the Cochin Shipyard. It was inducted into the Navy in November 2013.

Concerned over the worsening air quality in Delhi-NCR, the Supreme Court on 11th Nov, 2016, directed
the Centre to suspend and not renew the licence for possessing, stocking and selling of fire crackers in
the national capital.

Under Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC ) laws, a


special PMLA court allows Enforcement
Directorate (ED) to seize fresh assets worth Rs 1,620 crore of liquor baron Vijay Mallya in connection with
its money laundering case against him.

The International Conference and Exhibition on Sugarcane Value Chain Vision 2025 Sugar - held at
Pune on 9th Nov, 2016.

The annual flagship event of India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO), the 36th India International
Trade Fair held from November14-27, 2016, in New Delhi.

India and Israel signed two agreements in the field of water resources management and agriculture.
The two countries also agreed to promote educational exchanges as well as enhancing people to
people contacts through greater cultural and tourism linkages.

Under the Jan-Aushadhi Kendra scheme launched by the Central Government, Generic Drugs stores
have been launched at all district headquarters simultaneously. The Generic Drug stores launched in
the state have been named as Pandit Dindayal Jan Aushadhi Kendra. Such stores will function 24
hours a day.

Union Cabinet has approved constitution of 'special committee for inter-linking of rivers' in
compliance with a 2012 Supreme Court order. The move will help in monitoring precious projects to be
carried out under its National Perspective Plan, 1980.

The Union Cabinet banned the NGO run by controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik for five years. It
has declared it as an unlawful association which disturbed social and communal harmony.

The Supreme Court dismissed a plea by Tamil Nadu to review a 2014 apex court judgment banning
jallikattu, stating that the event had nothing to do with the exercise of the fundamental right of religious
freedom.

Search engines like Google, Yahoo! and Microsoft are asked to delete advertisements pertaining to
prenatal sex determination in India within 36 hours by the Supreme Court. The apex court directed the
Centre to appoint a nodal agency to monitor the websites.

Committee framed on black money: The Central government has formed a committee to share
information that various agencies have gathered about the black money trail since the demonetization of
Rs 500 and 1,000 notes. The panel, which has representatives from agencies like the Income Tax (I-T)
Department, Intelligence Bureau, Central Bureau of Investigation and Enforcement Directorate, is
authorised to conduct raids.

Project Insight is launched to nab tax evaders. It is the ministry's flagship project, aimed at widening the
tax base by catching tax evaders using technology.

The Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan has been launched by the Ministry of Health & Family
Welfare (MoHFW), Government of India to provide fixed-day assured, comprehensive and quality
antenatal care universally to all pregnant women on the 9th of every month.

The Election Commission has asked the Centre to continue with the use of indelible ink at banks for
exchange of old notes, but in keeping with its directions. As per the provisions of the conduct of
Election Rules, the left forefinger of electors is required to be marked with indelible ink at the
polling stations before he/she is allowed to vote.

The Supreme Court asked the government to detail the steps taken by it to amend the Representation of
People Act to give Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) the status of special voters. A bench led by Chief
Justice of India T.S. Thakur emphasized that NRIs cannot participate in the voting process unless there
is an amendment in the law.

The Government has taken a new initiative to create a Film Promotion Fund to promote Indian cinema
in the International Film Festivals. This initiative would help independent filmmakers to promote their
work across the globe.

In dowry death cases under the Evidence Act, the Supreme Court has ruled that the presumption of
culpability against an accused will be activated only when there is a proof. In a major verdict the court
said without proof the person cannot be held guilty by taking refuge of presumption under the Act.

The revised draft banning unregulated Deposit Schemes and Protection of Depositors Interests Bill,
2016 has been uploaded on the website of the Department of Financial Services for which the Finance
Ministry has invited comments and suggestions up to 17th Dec, 2016.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved opening of one Jawahar Navodaya
Vidyalaya, JNV, in each of the 62 uncovered districts. With the aim is to provide good quality modern
education to talented children prominently from rural areas, the project comes with an outlay of 2871
crore rupees.

National Highways Authority of India has raised Rs 10,000 crore from retirement fund body EPFO's
bonds so far this fiscal. LIC has in-principle has agreed to subscribe to its taxable bonds worth up to Rs
8,500 crore till March-end.

The Supreme Court issued a blanket ban on the sale of firecrackers in the National Capital Region,
citing the grave quality of air. The apex court banned fresh issuance of licence to sell firecrackers and
suspended license already issued.

The Ministry of Labour and Employment in collaboration with Department of Financial services, has
launched a nationwide campaign to open bank accounts in respect of those workers in both organized
and unorganized sectors who do not have one even.

IIT Kharagpur (IIT-KGP) has emerged as the only Indian institute in the top 100 in the Quacquarelli
Symonds (QS). Globally, the index has seen Stanford University and Massachusetts Institute of
Technology (MIT) bag first and second places, respectively, followed by China's Tsinghua University.

To enhance the bilateral maritime relations between India and Sri Lanka, Admiral Sunil Lanba, Chief of
the Naval Staff, is visited Sri Lanka on a bilateral visit from 27 November to 01 December 2016.

Department of Commerce has recently approved the Revenue Insurance Scheme for Plantation
Crops (RISPC) for protecting growers of tea, coffee, rubber, cardamom and tobacco from the twin risks.
The Scheme is to be implemented on pilot basis in eight districts in the States of West Bengal, Kerala,
Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Sikkim and Tamil Nadu by the Commodity Boards through selected
insurance companies.

Government of India has set up seven Zonal Cultural Centres (ZCCs) with headquarters at Patiala,
Nagpur, Udaipur, Allahabad, Kolkata, Dimapur and Thanjavur. This is done to protect and preserve
various forms of art and folk art, cultural traditions, artists/artisans and to promote cultural development
programmes.

Transgender as a third gender has been included alongside males and females in the Railway Ticket
Reservation Forms (both online as well offline) by the Railways and Indian Railways Catering and
Tourism Corporation Limited (IRCTC) . The inclusion is in compliance with an April 2014 judgment of
the Supreme Court of India in the case of NALSA vs. Union of India.

The Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) is learnt to have classified more than 200
pharmaceutical companies as high-risk, in a first such move to cleanse the Indian pharmaceutical
sector.

Haji Ali trustees decided to provide equal access to women, allowing access to the inner sanctum. The
trustees of Haji Ali Dargah, a 585-year-old shrine of Sayyed Peer Haji Ali Shah Bukhari located on an
islet off the Mumbai coast, had decided to stop access of women sometime in 2011 calling the practice
un-Islamic.

The Sri Padmanabha Swamy Temple issued an order allowing women devotees to enter wearing
churidars or salwars. The temple executive officer took the decision on a directive issued by the Kerala
High Court on September 29, 2016.

Sex Ratio at Birth (SRB) continues to worsen in India, falling from 898 in 2013 to 887 in 2014, new data
from Civil Registration System (CRS) released by the Office of the Registrar General of India show. The
ratio has been declining since 2011 when the figure was 909.

In the first ever bilateral visit by an Indian Defence Minister to Bangladesh, Manohar Parrikar arives
Dhaka on a two-day visit on 30 November, 2016. The armies of India and Bangladesh had recently
concluded the sixth edition of joint military exercise Sampriti-2016 which focussed on counter-terrorism
operations and the sources.

In order to promote research in the field of fertilizers, Indian Council for Fertilizers and Nutrient Research
(ICFNR), an Institution exclusively devoted to promotion of research in fertilizer sector under the
Department of fertilizers has been set up on 16.09.2016.

NITI Aayog has constituted a Committee of Chief Ministers representing different political parties to
examine and promote the use of digital payment systems across the country. The convener of the
committee is Shri Chandrababu Naidu, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh.

An agreement has been signed by LinkedIn with the Ministry Ministry of Human Resource
Development to create more job opportunities for Indian students. As part of the MoU, LinkedIns
Placements product will be adopted by all Indian colleges affiliated with All India Council for Technical
Education (AICTE).

In the wake of curbing fake notes and black money 500 and 1,000 rupees notes ceasd to be legal from
midnight of November 8 2016. New Rs. 500 and Rs. 2,000 notes starting from November 10 are in
circulation. Current move of demonetisation is the third time that has been done in India the first being
in 1946. The second demonetisation was done by Janata Party Government In 1978, when Rs 1,000, Rs
5,000 and Rs 10,000 note were demonetised.

India is third among countries with the largest pictorial warning on tobacco products, according to a
report released on 10th November by Canadian Cancer Society at the 7th session of the Conference of
the Parties to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), being held at Greater
Noida.

The World Bank has ranked Andhra Pradesh as number one in Energy Efficiency Implementation
Readiness with an overall score of 42.01 followed by Rajasthan (41.89), Karnataka (39.34) and
Maharashtra (39.29). The ranking figures in a study report of the bank titled: Indias State Level Energy
Efficiency Implementation Readiness.

The upgraded Jaguar DARIN III (from DARIN I by HAL) twin-seat aircraft has received Initial Operation
Clearance, IOC by the government. It is a significant milestone for the country's military aviation sector.

The Government is implementing the National Career Service (NCS) Project for transformation of the
National Employment Service to provide a variety of employment related services like job matching,
career counseling, vocational guidance, information on skill development courses, etc. which are offered
through the Employment Exchanges.

With the government notifying changes in the eligibility conditions for admission to the National
Institutes of Technology, students in the general category who score below 75 per cent in the Class-12
board examinations will no longer be able to join NITs irrespective of their JEE (Mains) performance.

Indian Railways organized a 3 day Rail Vikas Shivir (Rail Development Camp) at Surajkund near New
Delhi, from 18th November 2016 to 20th November 2016 with a view to generate numerous innovative
yet practical ideas across most critical areas of Railway Operations for substantial progress of this sector.

As per the new census data, nearly two-thirds of the disabled population in the age-group of 5-19 in
2011 was attending educational institutions. 61.2 per cent out of the total of 65.7 lakh disabled population
in the specified age group (5-19) were attending educational institutions in 2011. This is an improvement
of 11 percentage points from 2001.

The third indigenously designed Kolkata-class guided missile destroyer, INS Chennai, which was built by
the Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd. in Mumbai, commissioned into the Navy on November 21, 2016.

Indian Navy's seventh landing craft utility, the largest of its kind, was on 25th Nov, 2016. This is the
largest ship of this kind built anywhere in the world. The ship is cost effective, fuel efficient and best
suited for protection of Indian island territories of Andaman and Nicobar in the Bay of Bengal as well as
Lakshadweep islands in the Arabian Sea.

To boost production of pulses, the Centre on 15th Nov, 2016, has increased its minimum support price
(MSP) by up to Rs. 550 per quintal, including the bonus. The MSP for wheat has been increased by Rs.
100 to Rs. 1,625 per quintal for the Rabi 2016-17 season.

To encourage cashless transactions in the wake of the demonetization exercise, the Indian Railway
Catering and Tourism Corporation has done away with service tax charges on online booking till 31st of
December, 2016. A tax of 20 rupees is usually levied on sleeper class tickets and 40 rupees on AC class
tickets while transacting via the IRCTC website.

Union government has imposed anti-dumping duty for six months on imports of steel wire rods from
China to protect domestic manufacturers from cheap inbound shipments.

The Union government and Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed a $500 million loan for
constructing Indias longest river bridge across Ganga in Bihar. The road bridge (9.8-km-long ) project will
improve road connectivity between north and south Bihar and will serve as a link between Patna and the
surrounding areas.

As per recent publication of National Health Accounts Estimates for India 2013-14, the total health
expenditure as percentage of GDP is estimated at 4.02% for 2013-14. As per Economic Survey 2015-16
brought out by Ministry of Finance, public expenditure on health (Centre and States) as percentage of
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for 2015-16 is 1.3 %.

A Mobile Application R-MITRA (Railway Mobile Instant Tracking Response & Assistance) has been
launched by Eastern Railway for security of passengers especially women passengers in Kolkata and
suburban areas of the zone.

India and Cyprus signed the revised bilateral tax treaty under which capital gains tax will be levied on
sale of shares on investments made after April 1, 2017. This treaty will bring the island nation on a par
with Mauritius in terms of tax treatment. The new agreement also provides for exchange of banking
details and allows the use of such information for purposes other than taxation with prior approval of
competent authorities of the country.

Union Govt has confirmed that lead and other heavy metals such as cadmium and chromium have been
found in samples of Sprite, Mountain Dew, 7UP, Pepsi and Coca-Cola. The government study had
revealed that the PET bottles contained five different types of toxins.

Government has slapped safeguard duty on import of certain steel products like hot rolled flat sheets
and plates of alloy or non-alloy steel. This is done to protect domestic manufacturers from cheap inbound shipments.

Government has approved Foreign Direct Investment proposals amounting to 93 crore rupees pertaining
to pharmaceuticals and publication.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has announced new standards for manufacturers of
products to check mis-labelling.

The Centre announced a new committee, headed by Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant, to form a strategy to
expedite the process of transforming India into a cashless economy. Other members of the committee
include the Financial Services Secretary; IT Secretary, DIPP Secretary; NCPI MD & CEO; Rural
Development Secretary and Chairman NHAI.

India has become Morgan Stanleys biggest overweight in the Asia-Pacific, excluding Japan/emerging
market portfolio. Besides India, China, Taiwan, Peru, Chile and Czech Republic are some of the other
overweights for Morgan Stanley. Overweight or underweight means high or low weight than the
benchmark index.

In a first of its kind initiative, the Indian Boxing Council (IBC) and Sporty Solutionz have signed a fiveyear deal under which the latter will pump in Rs. 100 crore to boost professional boxing in India.

Andhra Pradesh

The World Bank has ranked Andhra Pradesh as number one in Energy Efficiency
Implementation Readiness with an overall score of 42.01 followed by Rajasthan
(41.89), Karnataka (39.34) and Maharashtra (39.29). The ranking figures in a study
report of the bank titled: Indias State Level Energy Efficiency Implementation Readiness.
The Andhra Pradesh Government raised the upper age limit from 34 to 42 for Public
Service Commission Examination. Applicable for jobs to be filled till September 30,
2017 only and not for direct recruitment to the posts of uniformed services.
The conference of Director-Generals of Police of States held at the Sardar Vallabhbhai
Patel National Police Academy in Hyderabad Telangana on 25th Nov, 2016.

Assam

AFSPA has been extended by six months in entire Assam and the 20 km-wide belt in
Meghalaya bordering the Assam state. The Centre has declared Assam as the disturbed
area status, and continued the controversial Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958.
The foundation stone of 1,300 crore rupees Patanjali Herbal and Mega Food Park has
been laid by Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal at Balipara. This unit will have
annual production capacity of around 12 lakh metric tonne.
Government of Assam inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Union
Ministry of Civil Aviation and Airport Authority of India under Regional Connectivity
Scheme (RCS).
The Central government and Asian Development Bank, ADB signed a 48 million US
dollar loan to help Assam state continue its drive to improve access power in the state
capital. This is the second tranche loan of the 300 million US dollar multi tranche
financing facility for the Assam Power Sector Investment Program that was approved by
the ADB Board in July 2014.
Under the smart city project, the Centre has announced an investment of over Rs 5,000
crore to construct a 12-km-long elevated railway corridor inside Guwahati. The entire
corridor between Kamakhya and New Guwahati will be elevated.
Arunachal Pradesh
The Centre has decided to extend the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in
three districts of Arunachal Pradesh. The notification has been issued even after the NDA
government signed a framework agreement with NSCN-IM in September 2015 to find a
final solution to the six-decade-old Naga issue.
Goa

Foundation stone layed for Mopa Airport, and an Electronic City at Tuam, in Goa
inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He also unveiled plaques to mark the
inauguration of Infrastructure for building Mine Counter Measure Vessels; and inauguration
of commencement of Construction of five Coast Guard Offshore Patrol Vessels.

To mark 70 years of Indias Independence, a multimedia exhibition held with the theme Aazadi 70 Saal, Yaad Karo Kurbani it has been organized by National Film Archives of
India (NFAI) at the International Film Festival of India, IFFI in Goa.
The 12th International Oil & Gas Conference & Exhibition, being organised under the
aegis of the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Government of India, is all set to be
inaugurated by Prime Minister at Vigyan Bhawan on December 5, 2016.
Gujarat

Urban Mobility India conference has been organized jointly by Ministry of Urban
Development and the State Government from 8th to 11th November in Gujarat at
Mahatma Mandir, Gandhinagar.
On 20th Nov, 2016, thematic handicrafts exhibition was inaugurated by Union textile
minister Smriti Irani. She had also launched a scheme of textile ministry 'pehchan' identity
cards to artisans in Ahmedabad.
Jammu and Kashmir

The Army is providing free coaching to students in parts of the Valley under a new
operation named School Chalo. Educational institutions in the Valley have been closed
for about five months now and over 30 schools burnt down.
Jharkhand

Jharkhand government celebrated the birth anniversary of noted freedom fighter


Bhagwan Birsa Munda and the 17th year of state formation day. He played significant
role in creation of Jharkhand state. Jharkahand came to existence after bifurcation from
Bihar on November 15, 2000 by then Atal Bihari Bajpayee government at the Center.
Kerala

Kerala has become the third and the largest Open Defecation Free (ODF) state in the
country. The state observed its foundation day on 1st November. Earlier, Himachal
Pradesh and Sikkim had declared themselves Open Defecation Free.
Karnataka

Free Wifi connectivity plan launched in all villages in the Bidar South Assembly
Constituency, becoming a digital constituency before 2017. The Wifi hotspot would be
installed near the gram panchayat office and it would emit signals in a 100-metre radius.

Karnataka Knowledge Commission (KKC) chaired by K. Kasturirangan has


recommended Kannada, the regional language, as the medium of instruction in all
schools up to class 4. English to be taught as the second language.

Maharashtra

Maharashtra has become the first state in the country to have cyber police station in
each district. 42 state-of-the-art cyber crime labs were converted into cyber police
stations. As per the statistics, cyber crime in Maharashtra has risen by 142.1% in the last
few years.
The Maharashtra state cabinet on 15th Nov, 2016, approved a policy for 100 percent use
of fly ash generated from thermal power plants and biogas plants for construction
activities. With this Maharashtra has become the first state to adopt the Fly Ash
Utilization Policy. This policy will create new employment opportunities in the power
plant sector and pave way for prosperity by generating Wealth from Waste.
Maharashtra government has amended the 2008 liquor prohibition orders. Now the
Gram Sabhas are empowered to pass a resolution calling for the liquor shops within the
villages limits be relocated 100 meters away or outside the village limit.
According to the Maharashtras Women and Child Development Department data, the
primary causes of childrens deaths in the Palghar region is not malnutrition but also
Diarrhoea and prematurity.
Maharashtra government set up a committee on 24th Nov, 2016, to look into the demand
of rising the retirement age of its employees to 60 years from the current 58. Central
government employees retire at the age of 60 years, while Maharashtra government staff
retires at the age of 58.
Vanyukta Shivaar app has been launched by the Maharashtra state government to
ensure survival of trees. This app will be used by guards, foresters, range forest
officers, assistant conservator of forests and deputy conservator of forests on their
smart phones.
Madhya Pradesh

In the aftermath of Bhopal jailbreak by eight SIMI activists, the Madhya Pradesh
government is installing electric fencing around its 122 jails to enhance prison
security.
Punjab

Asia's first biogas-based power plant is operating on paddy straw for largescale biogas
production in Fazilka, Punjab. An IIT-Delhi team has provided technical support to the
plant system generating 1MW power.
A new plant has been announced by the Union Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to
produce ethanol in Bathinda with an outlay of Rs 500 crore. This would put a stop to the
burning of paddy which in turn would lead to reduction of pollution level in the
environment.

Himachal Pradesh

Palampur Assembly Constituency in Kangra district has becomes the first e-assembly
constituency of the country. The resident of constituency now would not only know about
the development works going on by one click on computer but they would also send their
requirement about funds for different schemes in their respective areas online.
The upgraded Jaguar DARIN III ( from DARIN I by HAL) twin-seat aircraft has received
Initial Operation Clearance, IOC by the government. It is a significant milestone for the
country's military aviation sector.
Uttarakhand:
Uttarakhand High Court has ordered all hill stations and glaciers in the state to be
declared as eco-sensitive within three months. It has put a ban on all construction within
25 km radius of the glaciers.
Odisha

The first titanium project of India started its test production; it is being established by
Saraf group in Ganjam district of Odisha. After inception this plant is expected to
produce 36,000 tons of titanium slag and 20,000 tons of pig iron per year.
Punjab

Kerala

It has become the third and the largest Open Defecation Free (ODF) state in the country.
The state observed its foundation day on 1st November. Earlier, Himachal Pradesh and
Sikkim had declared themselves Open Defecation Free.
Karnataka

Free Wifi connectivity plan launched in all villages in the Bidar South Assembly
Constituency, becoming a digital constituency before 2017. The Wifi hotspot would be
installed near the gram panchayat office and it would emit signals in a 100-metre radius.
Karnataka Knowledge Commission (KKC) chaired by K. Kasturirangan has
recommended Kannada, the regional language, as the medium of instruction in all schools
up to class 4. English to be taught as the second language.

The US has announced two financial projects worth 95 million US dollars in India, to bring more
energy-efficient appliances to rural sector. This launch is part of its efforts to continue the global
transition to zero-and-low carbon energy sources. It has also announced a 20 million dollar partnership
with the philanthropic sector to bring more efficient appliances to Indian villages.

Bangladesh has announced to honour 1,668 members of the Indian Army (who were martyred during

The BBC World Service announced the launch of 11 new language services as part of its biggest
expansion since the 1940s. The first new services are expected to launch in 2017. The expansion is a
result of the funding boost announced by the UK government and the new languages will be Afaan

mark for commutations granted during his presidency. President Obama has commuted more sentences
than the past 11 presidents combined.

one of two life sentences handed down to Mohamed Morsi since his 2013 overthrow.

stories of gang rape, torture and murder emerge from among the thousands who have fled to
Bangladesh. The Rohingya people are Muslim Indo-Aryan peoples from the Rakhine State of Myanmar.

Colombias government and Marxist FARC rebels announced a revised peace deal to end 52 years of

Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have jointly topped the 2016 all-India State/Union Territory-wise ease
of doing business rankings. Last years topper Gujarat slipped to the third spot. The ease of doing
business index is an index created by the World Bank Group.

Agricultural Marketing and Farmer Friendly Reforms Index has been launched by NITI Aayog to
rank States and UTs under APMC Act. The Index has a score which can have minimum value 0
implying no reforms and maximum value 100. Maharashtra achieved first rank, Gujarat ranks second,
closely followed by Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh in implementation of various reforms.

ONGC Videsh Ltd, the overseas arm of state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corp, has completed the
acquisition of additional 11% interest in Russias Vankor oilfield, taking its total stake to 26%.

Logistics Data Bank (LDB) has crossed the one million mark of export-import containers tracked real
time at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT). The LDB is operated by DMICDC Logistics Data
Services, a joint venture of DMICDC and Japanese IT major NEC Corporation, with 50:50 equity
participation. LDB has also added a Google route map view, which enables users to view the location
of the 'containers in transit' on Google Maps through a more user-friendly interface.

As per the India Venture Capital and Private Equity Report 2016, titled Inspiration and Momentum for
the Gladiators at TiECON 2016, only 8.3 per cent of the startups are successful in getting funding. The
number of first-time angel investors has grown at the rate of 98 per cent that of investors who are
reinvesting has been 105 per cent.

China has agreed to import rice, non-basmati and basmati varieties, from 17 registered mills in India. It
is an important move with regard to the countrys widening goods trade deficit with China. Indias goods
trade deficit with China has ballooned from $1.1 billion in 2003-04 to $52.7 billion in 2015-16.

from India which is the largest remittance-receiving country in 2015, with an estimated $69 billion.

The Centre issued a $1.55 billion claim from Reliance Industries and its partners for drawing natural
gas belonging to state-owned ONGC in the KG Basin over the last seven years. The claim is in line with
the recommendations of AP Shah Committee.

As per the Indias Most Attractive Brands 2016 report, Tata brand suffered a setback in a survey on
brand ranking by slipping four positions to seven. LG has been ranked as Indias Most Attractive
Brand, followed by Sony, Samsung Mobile, Honda, Samsung, Bajaj and then Tata. In 2013 Tata brand
was ranked fifth, in 2015 it went up to become fourth, and now it has slipped to seventh position in the
2016 report.

As per the Grant Thornton International Business Report, India has improved its ranking by one spot in a
global index of business optimism. India was ranked second on the optimism index during the third
quarter (July-September 2016). Indonesia took the top spot, with the Philippines coming in third.

Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has launched a unique platform called Startup Mentorship Circle
to help in connecting start-ups with the global marketplace. "Startup Mentorship Circle is truly a strong
eco-system for nurturing innovation and startups to drive sustainable economic growth and generate

Mangaluru-Hassan-Yediyur/Mysuru LPG pipeline has been commissioned and pumping of LPG


commenced since on October 23. The pipeline was constructed by Hindustan Petroleum Corporation
Ltd. (HPCL) at a cost of about Rs. 838 crore to make the highways safe and also to reduce
environment pollution.

agribusiness, apparel, electronics and automotive. As per the reports, India must frame policies to
reduce farm subsidies and cut import tariffs on cars and take steps to improve ports and logistics to
emerge as an export powerhouse.

Essel Group has forayed into the Rs 16 lakh-crore asset management space by acquiring Peerless
Fund Management. This is the second acquisition of a fund house this year, after Edelweiss Mutual
Fund acquired JP Morgan MF in March.

The Foreign Direct Investment in the country has increased by 77.5 per cent to 5.15 billion dollar in
September 2016. According to the data of the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, the FDI
had stood at 2.9 billion dollar in September 2016.

Facebook on 11th Nov, 2016, has bought startup CrowdTangle (US Startup), which specializes in
tracking hot content on social networks for media agencies and others. The CrowdTangle platform is
tailored to spot news that is catching fire at online venues like Facebook, its subsidiary Instagram, and
even competitors such as Google-owned YouTube or Twitter.

Molinari Rail AG, a Swiss comapany has entered into a strategic pact to design, manufacture and

Reserve Bank of India has directed banks to waive off ATM charges on all transactions at own banks as

Under the Manufacturing Skill Transfer Promotion Program, Suzuki Motor Corporation has
announced to set up an industrial training institute in Mehsana district of Gujarat. This industrial training
institute will be known as Japan-India Institute for Manufacturing-JIM. The JIM will offer seven technical
courses i.e. fitter, electrician, mechanic diesel, motor mechanic vehicle, mechanic auto body repair,
mechanic auto body paint repair and welder.

FDI inflows into the services sector jumped over two-and-a-half times, to 5.3 billion dollars in the April
to September period of the current fiscal. As per the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, it
was 1.5 billion dollars during the April to September 2015 period.

Hyundai Motor India introduced the all-new Tucson for an introductory price ranging between Rs.18.99
lakh and Rs.24.99 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The new SUV is positioned between the companys Creta

Vodafone Group Plc, the largest mobile operator in Europe, slashed the value of its India unit by 5
billion euros (Rs 36,448.53 crore). This is due to increased competition sparked by the entry of
Reliance Jio Infocomm on September 5, 2016. Vodafone Indias service revenue grew 5.9% on year to
Rs 22,579 crore in the first half as the countrys No. 2 telco added 2.8 million subscribers for a total of
over 200 million.

Nasscom on 16 November downgraded the growth prospects for Indias IT exports this year to a range of
8 per cent to 10 per cent, from its earlier forecast of 10 per cent to 12 per cent, citing uncertainties
arising from growing anti-globalization rhetoric in the developed world.

MasterCard announced a new product by which customers can pay for services such as taxis, autos,
and shopping, using only their smartphones.

Start-up entrepreneurs from India and the UK would assemble on the banks of the Thames in London in
the spring of 2017 for the first such international fest organised by the government. As part of its
ambitious Start-Up India Action Plan, the government plans to host two such fests each year one in
the country; the other at an international destination known for its start-up ecosystem.

An addition of 1,964.76 MW in the first seven months of the current fiscal has taken the total solar power
generation capacity in the country to 8,727.62 MW. During 2015-16, 3,018.88 MW of solar power
generation capacity was added.

Reliance Industries and American conglomerate General Electric have formed a partnership to provide
digital solutions for industrial use that would potentially address a market valued at $ 25 billion. The
partnership will provide industrial Internet of things solutions to customers in oil and gas, fertilizer, power,
healthcare, telecom and other industries.

IL&FS Financial Services became the first Indian company to raise money through a masala loan, a
rupee-denominated loan from overseas investors, by securing the equivalent of $50 million from Export
Development Canada (EDC). In a masala loan the borrower saves on the hedging cost because the
repayment is in rupees. Ramesh Bawa is the IL&FS managing director and chief executive officer.

Yunus Social Business (YSB) and Tata Trusts unveiled the Indian Corporate Action Tank (ICAT), the
countrys first incubator for large organisations to create social businesses. The tie-up will address

Airtel Payments Bank a joint venture between Airtel M-Commerce and Kotak Mahindra Bank, will
offer 7.25 per cent interest rate on savings bank deposits. The payments bank, which received final
approval from Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in April, has introduced a pilot project in Rajasthan. Airtel is
the first one to get a final approval from the RBI.

Indias second largest IT services company Infosys has signed an agreement with Stellaris Venture

Gamesa has bagged a 50 MW turnkey project order from ReNew Power, an independent power

Paytm has rolled out a new feature on its mobile wallet application that will allow shopkeepers to accept
payments through credit or debit cards.The move eliminates the need for a point-of-sale (PoS) or swipe
machine. Currently, there are about 14.8 lakh PoS machines in India, used by seven lakh retailers, for
about 74 crore debit and credits cards in use.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has liberalized norms for angel funds to invest in

Following demonetization drive, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has asked banks to maintain 100 per
cent cash reserve ratio (CRR) for the incremental deposits they received between September 16, 2016
and November 11, 2016. The central bank clarified that the overall CRR requirement would stay at 4 per
cent. CRR is the proportion of deposits that banks have to keep as cash with the central bank. Banks do
not earn any interest on CRR balances kept with the RBI.

Amazon, the world's biggest online retailer, announced dairy brand Amuls foray into online selling in the
U.S through its Global Selling Programme. Amul is offering Amul Ghee and Gulab Jamun to global
customers through Amazon.com, according to Amazon.

Bitcoin (also known as crypto-currency) is a digital currency that is not supported by any countrys
government or central bank and it can be traded for services or goods with sellers who accept bitcoins as

Trusteer Pinpoint Detect, IBMs digital banking fraud prevention technology, has been strengthened with
the deployment of patented analytics and machine learning for real-time cognitive fraud detection. The
machine learning feature helps understand how users interact with banking websites, creating gesture
models based on patterns of mouse movements that become increasingly more accurate over time.

A team led by Dr. Nirmalya Ballav from the Department of Chemistry at IISER Pune has converted a
cadmium-based MOF insulator into a semiconductor at room temperature through nanochemistry. The
electrical conductivity increased nine-fold (a billion-fold increase) when chains of conducting polymers
were introduced into the nanochannels of MOFs. The MOF continued to retain its fluorescence even after
becoming electrically conducting.

MIT scientists have transformed the leafy plants into sensors that can detect explosives within minutes.
By embedding leaves with carbon nanotubes, the plants were designed to detect chemical compounds
known as nitroaromatics, which are often used in landmines and other explosives. Nitroaromatics
carbon nanotubes embedded in the plant leaves emit a fluorescent signal that can be read with an
infrared camera.

World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), India has reported an outbreak of a highly contagious
bird flu virus in the southwestern state of Karnataka on 25 November, 2016. The H5N8 virus was
confirmed among birds in the village of Itagi, and all 1,593 of the birds at risk from the disease died or
were culled, according to the report posted by the Paris-based OIE. The H5N8 bird flu strain has been
found in several countries in Europe and the Middle East in recent weeks, leading some states to order
poultry flocks to be kept indoors.

For the first time, scientists from MIT have succeeded in decoding the structure of an enzyme that is
used by bacteria to make polymer chains which is used for storing carbon when going through nutrient
deficits. Speciality of these polymers is that they make up a range of biodegradable plastics. Known
as Polyhydroxyalkanoic acids (PHAs), these polymer chains have properties ranging from
thermoplastics to elastomers depending on the type of monomers attached to them.

As per the UNICEF report, about 300 million children in the world breathe highly toxic air. The vast

Uri, Jammu and Kashmir: In the biggest strike on an Indian Army unit since the September 18 Uri
attack, terrorists targeted an Army camp at the XVI Corps headquarters in Nagrota near Jammu, killing
two officers and five soldiers.

NAGROTA : It is a strategically important garrison town located 14 kilometers from Jammu along the
lifeline highway to Srinagar. One of the Armys largest corps the 16 Corps is headquartered in the

Visakhapatnam: The Borra Caves are located on the East Coast of India, in the Ananthagiri hills of
the Araku Valley of the Visakhapatnam district in Andhra Pradesh. The caves, one of the largest in
the country, basically karstic limestone structures extending to a depth of 80 m (260 ft), and are
considered the deepest caves in India.

Java Island, Indonesia: An earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale occurred on 8th Nov, 2016,

per hour (121 km/h). State of emergency has been declared in response to the natural disaster.

Abydos, Egypt: Under an archaeological mission, archaeologists have unearthed a city dating back
more than 7,000 years, containing houses, tools, pottery and huge graves in Egypt. The city lays by
River Nile, close to the Temple of Seti the First in Abydos. Abydos is a place of many temples, and a
capital in an early period of ancient Egyptian history. The city was home to important officials and tomb
builders who may have been engaged in the construction of royal graves.

Bamiyan, Afghanistan: It is one of the best known site of two massive Buddhas, one 55 meters tall,
the other 38 meters tall, that were carved into the cliff face above the modern city between the 4th and
6th Centuries and which were destroyed by the Taliban at the urging of al-Qaida in early 2001.
UNESCO has classified the cultural landscape and archaeological remains of the Bamiyan Valley as a
world heritage site representing Buddhist and Islamic religious and artistic developments from the 1st to
13th Centuries.

Hanoi, Vietnam: An investigation has revealed that a small village outside Hanoi, Vietnam are using
Facebook to offload large amounts of illegal ivory, rhino horn and tiger parts. Ivory tusks and tiger bone
paste have been sold on the platform. Items are being sold in closed or secret groups through auctions,
which means new buyers or sellers have to be approved before being allowed into the group.

Luxor, Egypt: Spanish archeologists unearthed a 1000 year old mummy in good condition in Luxor, in
southern Egypt. Luxor is an important city for Egyptian tourism, as it features many pyramids and other
ancient artifacts.
