The subject of the thesis is Integration of Sporadic MPC in a Modelica-based

Simulation and Control System.
This thesis deals with a recently introduced technique named technique named Sporadic
Model-based Predictive Control (S-MPC for short) that aims to achieve the benefits of MPC
without carrying out the involved optimization problem at each control step, this will lead to an
algorithm for S-MPC which will remarkably decrease the Energy consumption.

Master Thesis

The subject of the thesis is Integration of Sporadic MPC in a Modelica-based Simulation

and Control System.
This thesis deals with a recently introduced technique named Sporadic Model-based
Predictive Control (S-MPC for short) that aims at achieving the benefits of MPC without
carrying out the involved optimization problem at each control step. In detail, this work
couples S-MPC to a Modelica-based library, obtaining a functional implementation that
can be used for tests on models having realistic complexity in much bigger size; an
example and proof-of-concept implementation is presented where the optimization is
carried out by means of JModelica. As a relevant additional product, Modelica models
were created and tested that take profit of peripheral controls installed in most building
energy systems, in a view to achieve easy parameterization and high computational
efficiency | both interesting properties in a system where simulation based optimization
plays a relevant role, and that has to be usable on the part of people who are more
specialist of the application field than of the applied techniques.

Questa tesi riguarda una tecnica di recente introduzione di nome Sporadic
Model-based Predictive Control (S-MPC in breve) che mira a conseguire
i vantaggi del controllo predittivo basato su modello (Model Predictive Control,
MPC) senza risolvere il problema di ottimizzazione in esso coinvolto ad
ogni passo di controllo, donde l'aggettivo sporadico". In particolare, in
questo lavoro la tecnica S-MPC viene accoppiata a una libreria di simulazione
Modelica, ottenendo una sua implementazione funzionale che puo essere
utilizzata per prove su modelli di complessita e dimensioni professionalmente
realistici; viene presentata a titolo di esempio e proof-of-concept
un'implementazione in cui l'ottimizzazione e eseguita tramite JModelica.
Come prodotto aggiuntivo rilevante, sono stati creati e testati modelli Modelica
che traggono vantaggio dalla presenza dei controlli periferici installati nella
maggior parte dei sistemi energetici per edifici, nell'ottica di facilitarne la
parametrizzazione e ottenere un'alta e_cienza computazionale -- due
proprieta interessanti in un sistema in cui l'ottimizzazione basata sulla
simulazione svolge un ruolo rilevante, e che deve essere utilizzabile da
parte di persone che sono piu esperte del campo applicativo di quanto lo
siano delle tecniche usate.
