FACILITIES WORKSHOP

You need:
topo.00t
fuelpad.dxf
totalphoto.jgp
Note: you actually only need the topo.00t.
The DXF only gives you a point with the following coordinates:

Bearing 140, distance 60m

Bearing 230, distance 20m
Bearing 140, distance 70m
Bearing 230, distance 40m
Bearing 320, distance 40m
Bearing 260, distance 30m
Bearing 320, distance 75m
Close the polygon.

New design: facilities

Note: create a different layer for each of the facilities: property boundary,
warehouse, headframe, fuel depot, etc.
New layer: boundary
For this polygon, use Key in Point Data, ie, Keyboard input:
Start point:

Label the property by point display.

Insert points at a distance:
Design, Point Insert, Insert at Distance
Warehouse is 60 x 25, so insert points at:
3m and 63m
3m and 28m

Use Angle Input (Bearing Input), inclination: 0

1

Load topography: topo.00t

Register both polygons: boundary, and warehouse.
Design, Object Edit, Register
Select by object: 2D registration, Interpolate
To check that the polygon is flat:
Analyse, Details, Layer Range
Or:
Label points by Z value
If the warehouse base is not flat (it will be), you need to create a base.
Note: Youll have to do this in the headframe, later on in the exercise.
New layer: warehouse
Use Snap to points mode, select your first point, then use Angle Input
(Create line at a given angle), perpendicular and parallel to a given line
(firstly pick the given line).
Perpendicular, 3m
Perpendicular, 25m
Parallel, 60m
Perpendicular, -25m
And then close the polygon.

Make a copy of the polygon (warehouse) and translate it 10 m higher (all

relative).

Note: these angles and distances may vary depending on the line you picked
as reference.

Then, you need to create the roof. Create a peak line of the roof, 3 m higher
than the bottom of the roof.

Then delete the first point:

Design, Point Edit, Delete
Select object (warehouse), delete the extra point.

To create the extra points, you can:

Insert at Distance (12,5m), then snap to points and create a line.
Then translate the line 3 m higher, all relative
Or:
Change the Z value of the object (add 3).

Design, Transformation, Translate

Create a solid triangulation (tick on first end plate, the floor), call it:
warehouse_walls.00t
Snap to object and place a haul truck symbol in the warehouse.

Now, create the solid triangulation for the roof: warehouse_roof.00t

Tick on construct first string, select the polygon at the base of the roof, and
then select the line.
Next, lets build a mine headframe, at the centre of the property.
Determine the centroid of the property boundary.

Or:
Use the lowest Z, and estimate how much material is to be removed.
You can estimate volume for this:
Model, Triangle Solid, Volume
Whether we create a base or remove material, we need a flat base.
Now, determine the bearing of the base (headframe):
Analyse, Details, Distance
(it will show the bearing in the report window)
Note: because the head frame is parallel to boundary property and to the
warehouse, and if you remember, the angle we used was 230 o = 50o.
Now, create a section at the southern edge of the headframe. Make it 5 m
wide either side.
View, Create Section
Select plane by 2 points (snap to points or object)

New layer: head_frame

The base of the head frame is 35 metres long and 15 metres wide and
designed at the boundary centroid.
Make the sides of the headframe parallel to the property boundary.
Snap to points (centroid) and use Angle Input (Create line at a given angle),
using the property boundary (or the warehouse) as a line of reference.
Perpendicular, distance 7.5m
Parallel, distance 17.5m
Perpendicular, distance -15m
Parallel, distance -35m
Perpendicular, distance 15m
Then snap to the second point, or closet he polygon.
Then you can delete the first point you digitised.
After you have created the headframe polygon, you can delete the centroid
(underlay)

You will now be in section

Check effect Toolbar, Bearing Dial
Bearing: 320, Dip -0
Now, lets create a polygon in section view.

Register the polygon to the topography triangulation.

Design, Object Edit, Register
Check the Z range of the head_frame polygon:
Analyse, Details, Layer Range
Z Range: 5942.062 to 5942.196
(check report window)
Use a Z that is at least 1 m higher than the highest point (to avoid crossings
in the triangulation) to create a base
3

Snap to points on the base of the polygon in a clockwise direction.

Start at the left bottom corner.
Use Bearing Input:
Inclination 90 (vertical), distance 12m
Bearing: 50 (along the bearing), distance 12m
Inclination 90, distance 28m
Bearing 50, distance 10m
Inclination -90 (vertical, opposite direction), distance 15m
Bearing 50, inclination -25, distance 14.344m
For the point before last, just snap to the corner, and then close the polygon.

Perpendicular, distance -25m

Parallel, distance -15m
Close polygon

Now, we need to create a triangulation for the head frame. There are 2 ways
to do it:
(1) make a copy of the polygon on the other side of the head frame base.
Design, Transformation, Translate
Snap to points (use the points on the corners of the headframe base), and
translate.
Now, create a solid constructing both end plates.
Or:
Model, Triangle Solid, Polygons
Project the polygon to the side.
Use the following parameters:
Save triangulation: as a single solid: headframe.00t
Projection width: 15m
Polygon position: bottom
Construct both end plates.

Expand the other 3 polygons, which are 3 metres, 1 metre and 3 metres
apart respectively.
Design, Polygon Edit, Expand
Change the Z value of the two polygons at the top of the wall 1 metre higher.
Design, Object Edit, Z value

Now, well create a fuel containment wall and fuel depot.

Import DFX file: fuel-pad.dxf
File, Import/Export, Import DXF
This will give you a point, which will be the NE corner of the innermost
polygon (see figure below)

Create a new folder to store triangulations, inside the triangulations folder.

Select triangulations, right-click, create directory
Note: New directory must end with .tri
E.g.: fuel_depot.tri
You need to restart Vulcan, to make this folder available.
(We can restart Vulcan later)

Or, you can just create a point (the start point for the fuel pad) using the
following coordinates:
X:
4686640
Y:
2364730
Z:
5930

Model the containment wall.

First, create a triangulatin for the walls
Model, Triangle Solid, Create
No end plates

Create the polygon which is 25m by 15 m.

Use Create line at a given angle (Angle Input), using snap to points mode.
Anticlockwise:
Parallel, distance 15m

Then Model Triangle solid, End plate

Append triangulation.
Then do the same for the base of the containment wall.
4

Then append the triangulations together

Model, triangle Utility, Append
Once you create the triangulations, you can move them into the fuel_depot.tri
folder.
Just cut the files in Vulcan Explorer and paste them into the new folder.
Now, we will design the fuel tanks.
Design, Point Insert, Interpolate
Equal parts: 2
Display the points to see it more clearly.
Create a line snapping to points.

Tank 1: r = 4m, h = 15m

Tank 2: r = 3m, h = 12m
Use Arc (or Design, Create, Arc)
Centre and radius
Arc length step size: 1
Now you can transfer the line to a different layer: ref_line

To insert point, use:

Design, Point Insert, Measure
Select object: the line
In plan
Equal parts: 4 (entire object)
Note: The Interpolate option inserts points by equal parts or distance along
a single line segment.
The Measure option insert points along an elevation, along a grade or by
plan view distance in multiple line segments.
These points will be used as centroids for the tanks.

Now you can create the solid triangulations for the fuel tanks.
Use the circles at the base, and project using:
Model, Triangle Solid, Polygons
Save triangulation as a single solid: Tank1
Projection width: 15m
Polygon position: Bottom
Construct both end plates.
Do the same for the other tank.
Volume Calculations
Calculate the volume of the containment wall
The containment wall is to be constructed mostly of dirt but will have a 5%
clay component.
Right-click on the containment wall triangulation and select Volume. Total
volume = 432 cubic metres
Required clay is 5% of volume = 21.6 cubic metres
Volume of the tanks
5

Tank 1 volume = 752.030 cubic metres

Tank 2 volume = 337.738 cubic metres
Total tank volume = 1089.768 cubic metres
Containment area
Model, Triangle Solid, Create
Single solid
Construct both end plates
Model, Triangle Utility, Boolean
Select 1st triangulation (containment area)
Select 2nd triangulation (Tank1)
Select Colour All from the context menu
Select Exclude from the context menu (just make sure you are excluding
the right areas)
Save
Name triangulation: Boolean

Calculate the volume of final_volume = 428.720 cubic metres.

Compare the volumes of the tanks and volume of the containment area and
determine if the containment area is sufficient enough to hold:
A catastrophic failure of Tank 1 - No
A catastrophic failure of Tank 2 - Yes
A catastrophic failure of both tanks No
Labelling
Create a new layer called TEXT.
Note:
2D text: in the XY plane (only seen in plan view)
3D text: in any plane
Note:
Fixed fonts (small, medium, normal and large) stay the same regardless the
zoom.
Scaled fonts: they resize depending on zoom (plotter size). They can be
changed to true type fonts.
Fixed fonts have to be converted to Scale fonts, to be converted to true type
fonts.
Note: create section view to see the head frame:
Label the head frame with 2D text with the fixed font LARGE in section at the
top of the head frame This text will remain the same and can be read from
any direction.

Then repeat, use Boolean triangulation + Tank2

Call the resulting triangulation: final_volume

Label the fuel depot so that the text is centred and parallel to one of its sides,
with 2D text and select the scaled font SCALED.
Right-click, Properties: change colour, and change drafting angle (-50), to
make it parallel to the edge.
Change the fuel depot text to the true type font Times New Roman and
ensure that it is still centred.
Right-click, Set True Type Font
Create a section view along the warehouse rook.
Select the plane by 3 points (use snap to objects mode)
3D text icon (or Design, Create, Create 3D Text)

Calculate the volume of triangulation final_volume
