Unit syllabus:

1. Drive Characteristics
Equations governing motor load dynamics-Equilibrium operating point and its steady
state stability-Mathematical condition for steady state stability and problems-
Multi quadrant dynamics in speed torque plane-Basics of regenerative braking-Typical load
torque characteristics-Acceleration, deceleration, starting and stopping.

Objective: To understand the stable steady-state operation and transient dynamics of


motor-load system.

Unit syllabus:

2. Converter/Chopper fed DC motor Drive


Steady state analysis of the single phase and three phase fully controlled converter fed
Separately excited DC motor drive: Continuous and discontinuous conduction mode-
Chopper fed Dc drive: Time ratio control and current limit control-Operation of four
quadrant chopper.

Objective: To study and analyse the operation of the converter/chopper fed DC drive
and to solve simple problems.

Open loop volts/hertz control and self-control of synchronous motor: marginal angle control
and power factor control, Permanent magnet synchronous motor.

Objective: To understand the differences between synchronous motor drive and induction
motor drive and to learn the basics of permanent magnet synchronous motor drives.
