Discuss the cultural background

of the student. Explain how you will use
their cultural knowledge and experiences
as teaching/ learning resources (for
themselves
and for other students).

Irina is 24 years old, and she is from Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan is a country located just beneath Russia. Her
country is fairly new as she told me it is as old her. I will use her background to help me build a connection
with her by trying to learn some basic words/phrases in her native language of, Russian. Irina has a mother
and father as well as an two brothers. I also have a Mother, Father and Brother and will be able to relate in a
similar way to having these relationships.

then return to reflect upon what worked and didnt.

What is the level of students heritage

(native or home) language skills in all four
communication modes (listening, speaking,
reading and writing? How do you think
you will use their strengths and build upon
their weaknesses?

Irinas native language is Russian. When we met she was able to carry on a
conversation in English. We talked about her home and what life is like in Kazakhstan.
She said she is in the process of getting a medical degree. Irina said she came here,
to the Austria Program in order to study English because her final medical exam is in
English. I believe Irinas main challenge is working on expanding her vocabulary in
order for her to have the right word to describe what she is thinking.

Consult with the students English as a
Second Language (ESL) teachers or
tutors(Dr. Healy) and
share ideas on how to support the students
learning in both the content classroom and

In our meeting Dr. Healy said the English they were learning was based on speaking
rather than fully understanding the grammar. Irina was able to communicate very well
even if she wasnt always using the correct tense of words. Dr. Healy asked us to
encourage the students in their English however to please correct the wrong use of
words when we are able.

Multiple Means of Representation: To

provide students various ways of acquiring
information and knowledge

Multiple Means of Action and Expression:

To provide options for students to
demonstrate what they have learned

While we were done chatting I wrote

down the words that she had struggled
with, at the end I asked her to read the
words and she was able to read all the
words with very minimal issues and
there was major improvement.
At the end of our sessions before we
wrapped up I had her give me correct
examples using some/any in
appropriate context.

correct her speech. She wrote about
organic foods and why we need to be
aware of where our food comes from. I
corrected very few mistakes, which
included the correct form of
usefulness.

between then and than. I explained the
