1.3 Iub IP Design

1.3.1 Protocol Control Plane

2
Physical Conection (Layer-1)
There are no changes concerning the layer-1.

3
VLAN Configuration (Layer-2)
One target was, to keep the modifications as simple as it is possible. Therefor we decided to configure for
all Iub-interfaces the same VLAN.

The following picture shows the testbed configuration scheme like described.

Figure 3: RNC 2600 Iub design

5
ICSU allocation of the Iub-CP
The maximum amount of ICSU card in an RNC Type 2600 config step-3 are 38 ICSU cards. The target
was, to reach from each NodeB all ICSU cards. This aim makes it necessary to reserve an /26 subnet
(62 hosts) fr the ICSU cards. Details are shown in the following picture.

Figure 4: ICSU subnet allocation

From NodeB side, no modifications concerning the IP addressing scheme is necessarry, because we keep
the /26 subnet for the iubSubnet for all NodeBs, independently of the NPGEP interface cards.

5.1.1 Protocol User Plane

6
Physical Conection (Layer-1)
There are no changes concerning the layer-1.

7
VLAN Configuration (Layer-2)
The VLAN allocation for the user-plane ist the same as described in the chapter 4..3.1.2 in the Iub VLAN
allocation table.

8
IP Adresses (Layer-3)
The IP adressing scheme will be the same as described in the chapter 4.3.1.3 in the table Iub IP-Adress
Scheme.

9
Iub UP Protocols
There are no changes concerning the Iub user-plane protocolls.

9.1.1 RACE Interface Design for Iub extension

As described before the expansion will be done by adding addition ports in the existing VLAN and in the
existing IP-Range. The RACE Router has to provide additional Interfaces these Interfaces will be assigned
to the existing Iub VLANID. So no new VLAN-interface is needed.
The distribution on the interfaces is static and part of the NodeB routing planning. NodeBs get different IP
Adresses from the RACE-RNC transfer network as IP destination, as shown in the table below.

Table 5: Transfer network as IP destination table

The table below shows the definition for VLAN and RACE Interfaces, please note that the interface
numbers are planning rules these definition must not be fixed in the xakta implementation and in the
template rules. The VLANID to usage assigment is fix. The 3.RNC is not a normal configuration
nevertheless there was the need for this configuration in the past as an exception; also this exception shall
be defined in this design. Deatiled information see Table 2: NPGEP Service allocation RNC Type 2600
Note: for the Huawei system it is supposed not to be possible to use the existing VLAN and IP Subnet for
the additional physical interfaces. Also the expansion for NSN in this way is limited to 3 because of the IP
network size (/29 = 6 Hosts). So for additional Interfaces in these cases new VLAN and new IPSubnetworks has to be configured, this will be described and implemented in a second step. => tbd.
The CP traffic from the NodeB to the RNC uses static routes on the RACE to be forwarded to the ICSU
network inside the RNC behind the NPGEP Interfaces. This traffic has to be distributed over all Interfaces
to the RNC, for this a static route to the same ICSU Network has to be added for every new Iub Port. The
traffic distribution is done by the rules of equal cost multi path routing (ECMP). To avoid black-holing in
case of failure on one of the Iub Interface pairs the static route shall be controlled by object tracking. The
tracked object must be the physical interface to the RNC (the gateway of the static route). The
configuration line is shown below, has to be done symmetrical on both routers.

The lines and the picture below shows the Testlab implementation and tries to explain the
function of the object tracking for the ICSU static route

Note that the backup procedure changes by introduction of the object tracking
control for the static route, when the connection between active NPGEP board and
RACE#1 fails the static route will be deleted in the IUB vrf on RACE#1 and the
route to ICSU network will be learned over the iBGP from RACE#2. So the traffic
will be forwarded via the MPLS path to RACE#2 to reach the active NPGEP port at
RACE#2 instead of VLAN Switching.
When an RNC with an existing Iub has to be extended by additional Iub Interfaces the existing static route
has to be deleted and configured again with the object tracking extension. Otherwise there are two static
routes in the configuration one with object tracking the other one without.
Figure 5: Race-Router design
The table below shows the configuration templates, reports and templates has to be adjusted during further
implementation in xakta.
Naming in Templates has to be adapted to final report definition

17.1.1 RACE Interface Design for IUPS extension

As described before the expansion will be done by adding addition ports in the existing VLAN and in the
existing IP-Range. The RACE Router has to provide additional Interfaces these Interfaces will be assigned
to the existing IUPS_UP/CP 1&2 VLANID. So no new VLAN-interface is needed.
The distribution on the interfaces will be done dynamicly by the RNC.

be defined in this design. Detailed information see Table 2: NPGEP Service allocation RNC Type 2600
Note: For the Huawei system it is supposed to be not possible to use the existing VLAN and IP Subnet for
the additional physical interfaces. So for Huawei new VLAN and new IP-Subnetworks has to be configured,
this will be described and implemented in a second step. => tbd.
The CP traffic from the SGSN to the RNC uses static routes on the RACE to be forwarded to the ICSU
network inside the RNC behind the NPGEP Interfaces. This traffic has to be distributed over all Interfaces
to the RNC, for this a static route to the same ICSU Network has to be added for the new interface. The
traffic distribution is done by the rules of equal cost multi path routing (ECMP). To avoid black-holing in
case of failure on one of the IU Interface pairs the static route shall be controlled by object tracking. The
tracked object must be the physical interface to the RNC (the gateway of the static route). The
configuration line is shown below, has to be done on both routers.
Object definition
track <TRACK_ID> interface <RACE_INTERFACE> line-protocol
TRACK_ID : 2<physical port number, 2-digit with leading 0>
Static route
RACE#1:

ip route vrf IUPS_CP1 <RNC1_ICSU_AA00> 255.255.255.240 <RNC1_IUPSCP1b_IP>

name ICSU0-RNC<RNC1_ID> track <TRACK_ID>

RACE#2
ip route vrf IUPS_CP2 <RNC1_ICSU_AA01> 255.255.255.240 <RNC1_IUPSCP2b_IP>
name ICSU1-RNC<RNC1_ID> track <TRACK_ID>
Note: When adding the 2. static route the xisting route has to be deleted and
reconfigured with object tracking.
