DengueistransmittedbythebiteofanAedesmosquitoinfectedwithanyoneofthefourdengueviruses.It
occursintropicalandsubtropicalareasoftheworld.Symptomsappear314daysaftertheinfectivebite.
Denguefeverisafebrileillnessthataffectsinfants,youngchildrenandadults.
Symptomsrangefromamildfever,toincapacitatinghighfever,withsevereheadache,painbehindtheeyes,
muscleandjointpain,andrash.Therearenospecificantiviralmedicinesfordengue.Itisimportantto
maintainhydration.Useofacetylsalicylicacid(e.g.aspirin)andnonsteroidalantiinflammatorydrugs(e.g.
Ibuprofen)isnotrecommended.
Denguehaemorrhagicfever(fever,abdominalpain,vomiting,bleeding)isapotentiallylethalcomplication,
affectingmainlychildren.Earlyclinicaldiagnosisandcarefulclinicalmanagementbyexperienced
physiciansandnursesincreasesurvivalofpatients.

IwasappalledtoreadthesadnewsintheSundayIslandandtheSundayTimesofJune10,ofthesudden
deathoftwoboys,AlastairSenanayake23andDamithAmarasuriya28,thesonsoftwobusinessmagnates
inColombobothofwhomsuccumbedtodengue.Asthefatherofthreesonsmyself,oneofwhombarely
survivedanattackofdengueabout10yearsago,Icanwellimaginetheuttergriefoftheirparentswhen
theirsonwasfelledintheprimeofhislifewithavirusdiseaseforwhichtheredoesnotseemtobeanycure
inmedicine.
IhavebeentryingtoopentheeyesofthemedicalfraternityforoverthelastfiveyearswhenIfirst
discoveredthatahomeopathicremedywasbeingusedextensivelyinIndiatocuredengue,whichIfelt
couldalsobeusedtotreatvictimsofdengueinSriLanka,wherethelateststatisticsoffatalitiesforthisyear
intheWesternProvincealonenumber65withover15,000victimstreated.

remedyintoahalfliterofdrinkingwatersoldinthesupermarkets.Theywereallcuredwithinashortperiod
ofunder12hoursaftertakingthefirstdoseofalargeteaspoonful(5ml)ofthewaterremedyfromthebottle
withsubsequentdosestakeneverythreehours.
ItisamatterofconcernthatinspiteofthefactthatIofferedtogiveagroupofdoctorswhomIrecently

otherVirusdiseasewhichcloselyresemblesdenguebutisnotquiteasdangerous,whichisnowprevalentin

diseasemaybreach390million.Thisyear,infectionsarebreakingrecordsalloverAsiaandLatinAmerica
fromsweepingepidemicsinNicaraguatotheworseoutbreaksinsixyearsinIndia,20yearsinThailand
andthefirsthomegrowncaseinWesternAustraliainsevendecades.Eventemperateclimatesarenow
stalkinggroundsfordenguecarryingmosquitoes.
Almost3billionpeople,or40%oftheworldspopulation,liveinareaswherethereisariskofdengue
transmission.Previouslyknownasbreakbonefever,owningtotheexcruciatingmuscleandjointpain

Dengueexactsitsgreatesttollamongyoungchildren,thosewithunderlyinghealthissuesorthosedonot
