BAAL WORSHIPPED AS GOD OF WAR, SWORD, FERTILITY & THE SUN

The Phoenician religion revolved around Bel (Baal) the sun god and
Astarte the moon goddess. Bel was portrayed as a young warrior wearing
a helmet with bulls horns.

Their religion involved the practice of human (adult/infant) sacrifice and

the participation of temple priestesses (prostitutes). Baalbek (City of Bel)
in Syria was located at the headwaters of Orontes river and became a
major center for the worship of Bel (Baal). The river flowed to Tyre and
was an early trade route of the Phoenician. The Syrian city Ugarit (Ras
Shamra) was a famous trading center with another temple to Astarte and
Bel (Baal). The city had early connections with the Torch Bearers, Hittites
and Mycenaeans before it was destroyed by the Sea People in BC 1200.

THE WORSHIP OF BAAL CAN CLEARLY BE RELATED TO THE WORSHIP OF THE

SWORD. BAAL IS KNOWN AS A FERTILITY GOD THAT CAN BE SYNCRETISED

WITH THE SWORD/SPEAR WORSHIP RELATED WITH VARIOUS GODS OF WAR.
THE SWORD ITSELF IS A SYMBOL OF FERTILITY, SIMILAR IN APPEARANCE TO A
PHALUS (SYMBOLIC OF THE MASCULINE PRINCIPLE) AND SPOILS OF WAR
BRING PROSPERITY TO A NATION. FIRE, AN ELEMENT ASSOCIATED WITH THE
GOD OF WAR, IS USED TO CREATE WEAPONS OF WAR AS WELL AS TOOLS FOR
AGRICULTURE AND CONSTRUCTION. THESE OBJECTS PRODUCED FROM THE
FIRE OF A FURNANCE (THE FURNACE SYMBOLIC OF THE FEMININE WOMB THAT
BIRTHS LIFEFORMS) ARE ALSO USED TO GAIN PROSPERITY BEING THAT THEY
ARE CREATED IN AN ACT RESPRESENTATIVE OF PROCREATION. AS A RESULT
OF THE PHILOSOPHY BEHIND THE FERTILITY RITES OF BAAL, THE WORSHIP OF
HIM CAN BE SEEN REFLECTED IN THE VENERATION OF THE SWORD AND THE
GOD OF WAR THAT WE FIND IN THE WAR CULTURE OF JAPAN MADE FAMOUS BY
THE SAMURAI.

BAAL WORSHIP IS INDIGENOUS TO THE LEVANT AREA AND IS SPECIFICALLY

ASSOCIATED WITH THE PHOENICIANS. SO STRONG IS THE CONNECTION
BETWEEN BAAL WORSHIP AND THE PHOENICIANS THAT SOME SCHOLARS
CONCLUDE THAT THE APPEARANCE OF BAAL WORSHIP IN FOREIGN LANDS IS
EVIDENCE OF THE PRESENCE OF PHOENICIANS IN THOSE AREA. JOHN
DENISON BALDWIN, A MEMBER OF THE U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVE FROM
MASSACHUSETTS, A CONGREGATIONALIST MINISTER WITH AN HONORARY
MASTERS DEGREE IN THEOLOGY FROM YALE DIVINITY SCHOOL IN 1834,
NEWSPAPER EDITOR AND POPULAR ANTHROPOLOGICAL WRITER, IS ONE SUCH
SCHOLAR. IN REFERENCE TO AN OBELISK SYMBOLISING BAAL FOUND IN KIVIK,
SWEDEN, MR. BALDWIN SAYS:
The festival of Baal or Balder, celebrated on midsummer night in the upper part
of Norway, reveals the Cushite race, for the midnight fire in presence of the
midnight sun did not originate in that latitude. This festival of Baal was celebrated
in the British Islands until recent times. Baal has given such names such as
Baltic, Great and Little Belt, Belteburga, Baleshangen, and the like. He asks,
What other people could have brought the worship of Baal to Western Europe in
pre-historic time? We see them in the stone circles, in the ruins at Abury and
Stonehenge, in the festival of Baal that lingered until our own times; and there is
something for consideration in the fact that Arabia has still the ruins of ancient
structures precisely like Stonehenge. - Traditions, Superstitions, and

Folklore: Chiefly Lancashire and the North of, By Charles Hardwick,

PG 10
With this line of reasoning, it would not be unreasonable to conclude the
Phoenician presence in Japan. Another argument following that same line of
reasoning can be found in the Oxford University Magazine and Review, Issue 1:
(i.) The Danites territory bordered on Phnicia, therefore the Danites
sailed on board the Phnician ships; (ii.) the Phoenician ships sailed to
Cornwall for tin, (iii.) therefore the Danites colonized Britain. - The
Oxford University Magazine and Review, Issue 1 By University of
Oxford, PG 87
Might not the Macedonians, who were very questionable Greeks, have
descended from the Danai, whom Homer describes as the bravest of
mariners and soldiers at the siege of Troy, and who are more likely to be
Israelitish Danites than any other? It would be but in the usual order of
Providence that Alexander the Great should spring from Hebrew
ancestors, to humble the pride of Babylon and shatter the dynasties that
oppressed the ancient people from the Euphrates to the Indus, from Egypt
to India. The there were Calcedonians, who were driven by the
Phnicians from Byzantium to the Black Sea, where they founded a city,
Mesambria. When they settled by the Hellespont seventeen years before
the Byzantians, the Persian general Megabasus said they had chosen a
bad position; they were driven to a better. Why not claim these, too, as
Danites? - Ancient Pillar Stones of Scotland; Their Significance and

Bearing on Ethnology, By George Moore, PG 167

Might the Danites, whose cultural influences find in the Far East, also have
colonized Japan in the same way they colonized Britain? Many striking
similarities between the culture and religions of Japan, especially the warrior
culture (Bushido) and sword worship, and Baal worship originating in the Levant
become clearly evident upon the slightest attempt at comparing the two. For
example, Thomas Wright, an English antiquarian of the late 19 th century, states
that several altars found in Britain, constructed by Roman legionaries or their
auxiliaries, were dedicated to a god named Belatucadrus. This god, who was
also identified with Mars, was described by the antiquarian to be identical with
the Phoenician Baal.

BAAL a Semitic word signifying owner, lord or master, and in the

highest sense denoting the deity. The Hebrews never used it as a
designation of their deity, but always to distinguish some god of the
surrounding nations With the article prefixed, it designated the Baal or
chief deity of the Phnicians. Strictly Baal meant the highest male god
(the sun or the planet Jupiter), as Ashtoreth or Astarte did the highest
goddess (the moon or Venus), divinities from whom all things visible and
invisible had their origin. The Greeks and Romans, however, sought and
found analogies between the several Baals and some of their subordinate
deities, as Mars and Hercules. The Bel or Bil of the Babylonians is closely
related to the Baal of the Phnicians, the former name being a
contraction of the latter, or this a guttural extension of the former. Baal,
Bal, and Bel, as prefixes or suffixes, enter largely into many proper names
of places and persons The Phnicians carried the word through all their
wanderings, giving us the Carthaginian Asdru-bal, Adher-bal, abd Hannibal. They carried the name to Ireland, where we read of Beal or Bal, the

ancient deity worshipped by Bal fires on the summits of the hills, and of
Bels cairns, where sacrifices were offered to Baal. The Greek and
the Latin Belus are merely the Babylonian Bel Whenever the Israelites
fell into idolatry, their natural tendency was to worship Baal, the god of the
nations with whom they came into most immediate contact. - The

With this syncretism of Baal and Mars in mind, it will be much easier to see the
similarity and more than likely the common origin of Baal worship, which will
provide more credence to the theory that Baal is the God of War.
The Scythians worshipped Mars, whose symbol, for they had no images,
was a pile of swords - A dissertation on the origin and progress of the

The religion of the Scythians was remarkable they worshipped the Sun
and Moon, Fire, Air, Earth, Water, and a god whom Herodotus calls
Hercules. But their principal religious observance was the worship of the
naked sword. The country was parceled out into districts, and in every
district was a huge pile of brushwood, serving as a temple to the
neighbourhood, at the top of which was planted an antique sword or
scimitar. On a stated day in each year solemn sacrifices, human and
animal, were offered at these shrines; and the warm blood of the victims
was carried up from below and poured upon the weapon. The human
victimsprisoners taken in warwere hewn to pieces at the foot of the
mound, and their limbs wildly tossed on high by the votaries, who then
retired, leaving the bloody fragments where they chanced to fall. The

The Romans worshipped, in the earliest times, the lance, as the symbol
of Mars, and the Scythians under the form of a sword; for they placed a
sword on the top of a large bundle of sticksand made the offering of a
horse, which was peculiarly sacred to the god of war, or sometimes of
other beasts, and even of men, for which prisoners of war were generally
chosen. - Shakespeare's Puck, and His Folklore, Illustrated from the

THE WORSHIP OF BAAL AS THE GOD OF WAR CAN ALSO BE FOUND IN

JAPAN. THE JAPANESE WORSHIPPED THE SWORD AND THE GOD OF WAR
IN, ALMOST AND IDENTICAL MANNER, AS THE SCYTHIANS. JUST AS THE
SCYTHIANS SACRIFICED PRISONERS TO THE SWORD, SO DID THE
JAPANESE.

In certain cases, the execution of a condemned criminal could be a

means of testing the quality of a swords blade. This was a more realistic
test for a swords quality than the more usual tameshigiri performed on a
corpse. The Samurai Swordsman: Master of War, By Stephen

the terrible practice of tameshigiri where swords were tested on human

bodies. Tameshigiri had been practiced occasionally in earlier times but,
as with many other things, it became structured and formalized under the
Tokugawa shogunate. The Yamano family were the official testers and
they were allowed to test swords on the bodies of convicted criminals. The
result of the test would be inscribed, unsually in gold characters, on the
nakago of the blade and this added greatly to the value of the sword. A
saidan mei, or cutting attestation, might typically give the date of the test,
the name and monogram of the tester, and the resultfor example, mitsu
do saidan, cut three bodies through the trunk. - Samurai: The

Swords used in Tameshigiri are said to "want more blood" and are often
