NHS spending money on holidays + most diabetic country in Europe

New reports suggest that the NHS has been spending money
on some odd things, including holidays and clothes for patients.

The peculiar purchases are part of a scheme that allows

patients with long-term conditions to have greater control over
how theyre treated. Everything is approved by a doctor.
Nevertheless, the NHS has been heavily criticised following the
reports release. Not least by people with diabetes, who may
consider the findings difficult to explain in the wake of a report
that suggested diabetes would bankrupt the NHS.

that suggested diabetes would bankrupt the NHS.

NHS 'personal health budgets' used to

fund holidays and games consoles
The NHS comes under a lot of criticism. In the last month, it was
suggested that the diabetes prevention programme will not
have the intended effect; and a study found that self-monitoring
of blood glucose offers many benefits for people with type 2
diabetes, something which the NHS only supports in certain
cases.
Needless to say, the NHS isnt always popular, particularly
when it comes to diabetes treatment.
But is it actually unsuccessful? The media gives the impression
that we are a nation buckling under the weight of the diabetes
epidemic, barely treated and largely ignored. But how do we
compare to Europe?
A recent report looks at the prevalence and money spent on
diabetes in each country, ranking them by rates of diabetes, and
the UKs position might come as a surprise

Which European nation has the highest

rates of diabetes?
The same report looked at how different European countries
spend their money, and what prevention and treatment plans
they have in place for the future. Some of the approaches are
fascinating, and theres a lot of difference.
In some ways, the UK is doing really well. That said, there are
things that could be learned.

How does diabetes treatment in the UK

really compare to the rest of Europe?
And speaking of diabetes treatment throughout Europe, make
sure youre well prepared for any travelling you might be doing.
Weve put together guides for a whole host of different
countries, detailing all the things you should sort out and bear in
mind when you visit. If youve got holiday plans (sadly, summer
is over), its worth taking a look.

Is retinopathy and insulin inevitable?

Alisonjane10 posted yesterday: "The article on Diabetic
Retinopathy States After 20 years of Diabetes, nearly all
patients with Type 1 diabetes and >60% of patients with Type
2 diabetes will have some degree of retinopathy.
Again, this frightens & saddens me. Of course, I know about
diabetic complications. I made it my business to educate &
inform myself, via this forum and other resources, when I was
diagnosed earlier this year. Am I really so naive not to be
aware of this prognosis. Im angry! Rightly or wrongly so.
The Independent Diabetes Trust is a competent, trustworthy &
reliable organisation with a good reputation, who educate and
support those with this disease. Ive no reason not to believe
their statistics. Im gutted to be honest."

Are new NICE HbA1c targets too tight?

NICE has recently unveiled their new HbA1c targets for type 1 diabetes and
theyre tighter. The new guidelines released on 26 August have tightened up
the targets to 48 mmol/mol (6.5%) for all people with diabetes, including
children.

Could pollution cause diabetes?

The relationship between pollution and diabetes is growing, but will it take
an environmental tragedy to finally demonstrate a causal link between the
two?
A two-year study recently concluded that insulin-treated type 2 diabetes
patients who lived next to heavy traffic had increased inflammation
compared to lower traffic areas.
We examine this link, and why air pollution should be regarded as a risk
factor for diabetes.
