Design Validation of 19T15 Tube Unit

Bearing Plates with Strand Hole arrangement:

The dimensions are 210mm diameter and hole arrangements as 12, 6 & 1. 12 holes has a
PCD of 150mm, 6 holes has a PCD of 76mm and single hole is in the centre.

Strand Inclination:

Now 12 hole strands when coming out of bearing plate has a distance from center-line 75mm
and when the strand enters into Tube Unit, it sticks to inner diameter of hole, so has a
distance of (53.5-7.6) or 45.9 mm. So the actual vertical distance traveled is (75-45.9) or
29.1mm and horizontal distance traversed is (277-47) or 230mm. So the strands coming out
of 12 holes has an inclination of tan-1(29.1/230) or 7.21.
Similarly 6 holes strand has an inclination of tan-1(8.9/230) or 2.216.

Forces in the Strands and its two components:

GUTS of a 15.2mm strand is 260.68KN and maximum load applied at the time of stressing is
80% of GUTS. Hence 12 holes strands has net load along its axis is (0.80X260.68X12)KN or
2502.528 KN.Similarly 6 holes strands has its net load along its axis is (0.80X260.68X6)KN or
1251.264KN.
Longitudinal Force on Tube Unit for 12 strands is 2346.16 X COS(7.21)=2327.60 KN and
Transverse force on Tube Unit is 2346.16 X SIN(7.21)= 294.46 KN.
For 6 strands, longitudinal force is 1251.264 X Cos(2.216)=1250.32 KN and Transverse force
Tube Unit is 1251.264 X SIN(2.216)=48.382 KN.
Single strand has only Transversial component, no transverse force.
So the net longitudina force is (2327.60+1250.32+208.54) = 3786.46 KN, and transverse
componenet is (294.46+48.382) = 342.842 KN.

Area of Interaction

When compressive force comes into play from bearing plate to Tube Unit, Concrete would try
to resist its movement into it. Neglecting some losses, the same force which emanates from
Stressing Jack would be delivered to Concrete Prism. As there would be two components of
force comes into play, two components of area would make it balanced.
The longitudinal force would be balanced by face plate (290X290), back end collar of external
diameter 220 mm and internal diameter 107 mm, and horizontal component of the inclined
surface area of the Cone body.
The transverse force would be balanced by the vertical component of the inclined surface
area of the cone body.
Horizontal Areas would be as follows:
1.290X290- /4(1652)=84100-21382.46=62717.54 mm2.

2./4 (2202 ) -/4(1072) = 29021.25 mm2.

3. X (165+107)/2 X (236-47) X Sin (7.21)= 10134.31 mm2.
Therefore Net horizontal area = [(1)+(2)+(3)]= 101873.1 mm2.
Vertical Area would be = 80751.5 X Cos(7.21) = 80113 mm 2.

Stress by reactive force from Concrete:

Stress in longitudinal direction = 3786.46 X 103 / 101873.10) = 37.16 MPa.

Stress in Vertical direction = (342.842 X 103 /80114) = 4.28 MPa.
This stress in longitudinal direction acts on the collars principally, while stress in transverse
direction acts on the walls of the anchor cone.

Shear & Moment on different parts of TU and dimension on

basis of it:

Punching Shear on the front collar at the end of Bearing Plate:

Value of Punching Shear= X210 X t [where t= thickness of plate at that line].
Permissible shear stress= 0.66X260 Mpa=171.60MPa and net horizontal thrust=3781.38 KN.
Therefore t=(3786.46X103)/(X210X171.60)=33.45mm < 41mm (as provided), Hence OK.
Let us check against bending:
Width of bending=(290-165)/2=62.5mm, linear load across this width= 37.16 X290 = 10776
N/mm.
Bending moment on the face of inner hole(of collar)= 10776 X 62.5 X 62.5/2= 21046875 Nmm. [considering cantilever action on the collar]
Section modulus(Z)= 1/6X290Xt2. [as Z=1/6xbxd2]
So value of t=21046875 X6/(290X260) = 40.92 mm < 41mm(as provided) Hence OK.
To check the thickness of body of Tube Unit, let us calculate flexure of the body at pressure
comes from concrete.
The flexure comes from the stress on the body of Tube Unit and that is 4.28 N/mm 2, which
acts as hoop stress on entire surface of the tube.
If the thickness be

t2, pressure be 'p' and permissible stress be ''

= (pxr)/t2
t2=(4.28 X 136)/140 = 4.15mm < 8mm (as provided) Hence OK.
