For over two thousand years the black seed, a plant from the Ranunculaceae
(buttercup) family, has been traditionally used by various cultures throughout the
world as a natural remedy for several diseases and ailments and to improve health in
general.
The ancient Egyptians knew and used the black seed and described it as a panacea
(cure for problems and diseases). Tutankamun even had a bottle of the oil in his
tomb!
The Romans also knew this seed and called it Greek Coriander and used it as a
dietary supplement.
In the first century, the Greek physician Dioscoredes recorded that the black seed
were taken to treat headaches, nasal congestion, toothache and intestinal worms.
The black seed is also mentioned in the Bible in Isiah 28:25-27 as the fitches. Ibn
Senna, known in the West as Avicenna, who wrote the great medical treatise 'The
Canon of Medicine', referred to the black seed as the seed that stimulates the body's
energy and helps recovery from fatigue.
Nigella Sativa originates from Western Asia and is a herb that grows about 16-24
inches in height and has white flowers when in bloom. The plant is now cultivated
from the Near East to India. The deep black, sharp-cornered rectangular seeds (no
longer than 3 mm) are the part of the plant that is used for the preparation of
products.
The black seed is cultivated in Russia, Turkey, Egypt, Arabia, Oman, Ethiopia, Middle
East, Far East, India, Bangladesh, France, Germany and the Mediterranean Basin. It
also grows wild in Egypt, Syria, Asiatic Turkey and the Balkan States.
Nigella Sativa is known commonly in Arabic as Habbat-ul-Baraka (blessed seed) and
in English as Love in the Mist.

Research
Since 1959, over 200 studies have been carried out at international universities and
articles published in various journals have shown remarkable results supporting its
traditional uses.
The Nigella Sativa seed itself contains numerous esters of structurally unusual
unsaturated fatty acids and the chemical composition is very rich and diverse. Apart
from its active ingredient, crystalline nigellone, it contains 15 amino acids (including
eight of the nine essential ones), carbohydrates, fatty acids including linolenic and
oleic, volatile oils, alkaloids and dietary fibre, as well as minerals such as calcium,
iron, sodium and potassium.
Recent research on the black seed as an anti-biotic, anti-tumour, anti-inflammatory,
anti-histaminic, anti-bacterial, anti-bronchial and immune boosting agent has shown
great promise.
Traditional uses of the Black Seed from around the world
For centuries, the black seed and its oil has been used by people in Asia, Africa, the
Middle and Far East to promote health and fight disease. It has been traditionally
used to treat a variety of ailments and conditions related to respiratory health,
stomach and intestinal complaints, kidney and liver function, circulatory and immune
system support and to improve health in general.
Black Seed Oil Benefits
Of the many ways that black seed oil benefits the body, the 6 that stick out in the
scientific literature its ability to help prevent cancer, diabetes, obesity, hair loss, skin
disorders and infections like MRSA.
1. Cancer
Croatian scientists evaluated the antitumor activity of thymoquinone and
thymohydroquinone in mice and discovered that the two phytochemicals in black
seed oil can resulted in 52% decrease in tumor cells! (10)
Being rich in both chemicals, black seed is unique in that it can help prevent and
treat cancer through a variety of mechanisms:
Anti-proliferation
Apoptosis induction
Cell cycle arrest
Reactive oxygen species generation
Anti-metastasis
Anti-angiogenesis

4. Weight Loss
The Journal of Diabetes and Metabolic Disorders published a study last June
systemically reviewing the literature for plants that have anti-obesity properties and
discovered that black seed oil was amongst the most effective natural remedies on
the planet. (15)
Not traditionally believed to treat obesity, Nigella sativa is a marvelous antiinflammatory agent that is known to help people lose weight in the same way that it
helps diabetics. Specifically, by decreasing these weight gain triggers, black seed oil
has helped millions shed excess weight: (16)
Appetite
Liver gluconeogenesis
Cholesterol
Triglycerides
5. Hair
Probably one of the most unique black seed oil benefits is its uncanny ability to help
restore hair loss. No one quite understands why it happens, but its not too hard to
guess that it has something to do with its powerful antioxidant and antimicrobial
properties. By strengthening hair follicles, there is very good reason to see how black
seed oil can help promote strengthened hair roots.

6. Skin
Produced in the retina, choroid and epidermis, melanin are pigments that protect the
skin from damage. You probably are most family with it being the main chemical
responsible for giving our eyes and skin their individual color. Known to promote and
inhibit melanogenesis (melanin production), black seed oil benefits on the skin and
other cells are profoundly healing. (17, 18)
For example, in a recent study conducted by Iranian researchers, Nigella saliva was
found as effective as the skin cream Betamethasone in improving quality of life and
decreasing severity of hand eczema. (19) When you consider that black seed oil has
virtually no side effects, the benefits of Nigella, in fact, far exceed medical
intervention!
7. Infections (MRSA)
Of all the superbugs that black seed oil can kill, Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus
aureus (MRSA) is one of the most important. MRSA is plaguing hospitals and nursing
homes across the globe because ordinary staph infections are becoming resistant to
generic antibiotics. The elderly population is especially at risk because it is generally
associated with invasive procedures such as surgeries, intravenous tubing, and
artificial joints. (20) Primarily due to weakened immunity, the growing population of
senior citizens has made MRSA a global public health risk.

SESAME OIL
The Queen Of Oils
Sesame oil is acquired from the seeds of Sesamum indicum plant. It naturally has
yellow color, nutty flavor, and contains plenty of nutrients. Besides for cooking, the
oil is possibly applied topically for cosmetic purpose, especially skin health. Some
benefits of sesame oil for skin are listed in the following passages.
1. Natural Sunscreen
Vitamin E contained in sesame oil acts as excellent antioxidant thus it is useful as
natural sunscreen lotion. Free radicals and oxidation that come with sun exposure
can damage your skin. If you think applying chemical-based sunscreen is not good
enough, sesame oil can be the best alternative.
Chemical-free sunscreen should not trigger skin problems, however you should
consult dermatologist before applying the oil in order to prevent possible allergic
reactions. You can also try applying sesame oil to a small area of your skin and check
for unusual reactions to make sure that it is safe to use.
2. Moisturizes the Skin
Sesame oil can act as both moisturizer and emollient for full-body skin. Besides
vitamin E, sesame oil also contains linoleic acids, stearic acids, and palmitic acids. It
is even safe to use this oil regularly every day for optimum results. Please remember
that sesame oil has strong fragrance, but you can eliminate it by mixing the oil with
other essential oils such as castor or almond.
Such mixture can even handle dry skin problems in some areas for example knees
and elbow. To prevent dry skin problem, simply pour some drops of sesame oil into
your bath water.

1. Daily use
There are actually some possible methods to apply sesame oil as daily treatment for
skin. The easiest one is to apply the oil after taking hot shower. Let the skin slightly
wet, and then massage the oil into your face and full-body skin. Leave it for about 10
minutes, and then rub any remaining oil completely. Sesame oil basically traps
moisture, so this method should keep your skin moisturized throughout the day.
Another good method is to apply the oil before taking hot bath. As mentioned earlier,
sesame oil traps toxins. When you wash your body with warm water, the toxins will
be removed. If sesame oil brings overwhelmingly strong smell for you, simply mix it
with olive or almond oil. You can also mix sesame oil with turmeric, and then apply
the solution 10 minutes before taking hot bath. Use this on daily basis to get glowing
skin.
2. As a Sunscreen
Another good thing about sesame oil for skin is that you can use it as sunscreen
lotion. Unless you work or live in a continuously sunlight-exposed environment, you
will not need to use sunscreen every day. If you need such lotion in some occasions,
sesame oil can protect you from oxidation and free radicals as well. You need to use
cosmetic-grade sesame oil, not the cooking-grade type. Each type has different
properties, so make sure you use the right type.
Use only 100% pure sesame oil to get all possible benefits. For more advantages,
mix it with other essential oils such as clove, rosemary, lavender, thyme, or cedar
wood. The most common proportion is 3 drops of any of those oils per teaspoon of
sesame oil.
There is no special method or instruction in using the oil for sunscreen lotion. Simply
apply the solution all over your body including facial skin. As a sunscreen, it is only
intended for topical use on skin layers, so please be very careful when applying it
around eye and mouth areas. In other words, do not swallow or allow direct contact
with eyes. Sesame oil is easily removed, so you may need to re-apply the solution
after heavily perspiring or jumping into water.

Conclusion
People with oily skin may not be very comfortable about using essential oils for skin
treatment. Nonetheless, the benefits of sesame oil for skin are not limited for people
with dry skin only. Its abilities to remove toxins, improve blood circulation, and
protect skin from free radicals are beneficial for both skin types.
