With the Gothic Age came many great cathedrals in Europe, which in turn created a greater
demand for the panels. In the fifteenth century stained glass transformed from environments to
pictures where figures were the prominent focal point. During the renaissance stained glass
meant heavily painted white windows, because of this the panels lost some of their luster and

only in a small way.
More recently there seems to have been quite an interest in stained glass panels. People are
discovering new ways to create an old art form. Whether you are a stained glass fan or not
knowing some of the history of the stained glass may make it all the more appreciated in all its
forms. Stained glass can be found all over the world both antique and new. In some people's
opinion there is nothing that can compare. Whatever your preferences it is safe to assume that an

Cathedral stained glass panels span the transition from the Roman to the Gothic era. The
awesome Chartres Cathedral, containing a staggering 160 stain glass windows and three roses,
created between 1200 and 1240 is also found in the UK and has excellent stained glass patterns.
Some excellent stained glass artwork is also viewed at the Five Sisters in York Minister. It
involves the new technology of grisaille. This basically means to turn grey but is actually a
beautiful silvery shimmering haze created by painting foliage on plain glass and finely cross
hatching areas in between to disturb the light.
