TEXT:
The house had stood for more than a century, and there wasnt anything modern about it. Old was only one
word to describe the place. Among the local people, the house was the subject of much talkand wonder.
Years ago the farm served a family well. One couldnt pass the property without noting its beauty.
Then one day the entire family was gone, yet many things remained. It was so sudden that the whole
situation raised questions.
The house had fallen quiet. Its dark windows held secrets. If only walls could talk.

That was a very interesting passage. From that beginning of a story, a whole novel could evolve.

An interesting plot line. I like the idea of having the walls "talk." Well, between the two, I'd have to go with
your Scooby Doo version! I just want to hear Scooby say, "If ralls rould ralk!"

This is a little project I started a couple years ago. It will take me some time to create short texts using all
2,000 high frequency words on the General Service List, but that's my goal. :) Reading aloud is great for all
levels. Thanks for joining me here.

I'm really happy you're using my texts. Remember not to rush through them. Take your time and only move
on when you feel confident about your reading. Record yourself and listen carefully to the quality of your
speech. It doesn't have to be fast. Smooth, clear, and natural should be your goal. Good luck to you and
thank you for studying with me! :)

Thanks very much +JenniferESL for these wonderful resources. I want create a similar activity for my
students, but I want to use the reading from the textbook we are reading at School. I can see you
recommend to read 4 times for seven days the same text. Can I use that in my classroom? Is there a way to
motivate my students to read and record themselves? I am very excited about this activity! But I need some
advice to adapt this to my classroom.

Hi Alexis. Did you get my other response? This might be of interest to you:
https://englishwithjennifer.wordpress.com/2014/02/20/finding-fluency-through-oral-reading/ Use short
excerpts that can be read in about a minute or less. You can even allow a choice of two or three texts to give
a sense of ownership over the task. One can be sweet, one can be funny, another can be informative. You
can also allow them to create their own texts and then read them aloud. This might insprire you:
https://englishwithjennifer.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/personalized-pronunciation-texts_handout.pdf.
Whatever the text is, they need to practice the text daily for a week. Have a recording done on Day 1 and
Day 7. You could pair up students and encourage partners to support each other with feedback and praise.
They could check in with their partners mid-week. You, of course, should also evaluate their reading on Day
7. Good luck!

Probably the house was infested by roaches and there weren't other solutions to the family. Even the men
who were supposed to kill the cockroaches (I don't know how they are called :)), they failed. Thank you
Jennifer for this wonderful reading!

Hello. Yes, please use this link. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?

list=PLfQSN9FlyB6RumUTLuDAGY3m6YpBLHSsw The earlier readings are easier and a bit slower. I"m
using a word frequency list. So my readings will become more difficult little by little. :)
