General instructions:
1)
2)

All questions are compulsory. There are 19 questions in all.

Here are five sections:
Section-A contains five questions of one mark each.
Section-B contains five questions of two marks each.
Section-C contains seven questions of three marks each.
Section-D contains one question value based of four marks.
Section-E contains one question of five marks.

[Section-A]
1. A bar magnet falls down through a coil . How will the acceleration of falling magnet
2.
3.
4.
5.

compare with acceleration due to gravity (g) ?

Define the mutual inductance. Give its SI unit.
Why the core of a transfer is made laminated?
Can peak voltage across an inductor be greater than peak value supplied?
Sketch a graph showing the variation of capacitive reactance of a capacitor with the
frequency of applied voltage.

[Section B]
6. Show that the units of rate of change of magnetic flux and induced emf are the same.
7. Define copper loss in transfer. How it is reduced?
8. A charged 30 F capacitor is connected to a 27 mH inductor.
9. Using Kirchhoffs law derive the condition for the balanced position of wheatstones bridge.
10.
A cell can be balanced against 110 cm and 100 cm of potentiometer wire respectively
with and without being short circuit through a resistance of 10 .What is the internal
resistance of the cell?

Or
The variation of potential difference V with length l in case of two
potentiometers X and Y as shown. Which one of these will you
prefer for comparing emfs of two cells and why?

[Section C]
11.

The circuit shown in the diagram contains two

Identical lamps P and Q. What will happen to
The brightness of the lamps, if the resistance
Rh is increased? Give reason.

12.

Prove that when a current is divided between two resistances in accordance with
Kirchhoffs laws, the heat produced is maximum.

13.
14.

Discuss the effect of temperature on resistivity of conductors.

A student obtains resistances 300, 400, 1200 and 1600 using two metallic
resistance. If these are carbon resistors, write the value in the colour coding.
15. For what value of load resistance is the power transfer is maximum when two identical
cells are connected in parallel. The emf of each cell is E and internal resistance is r.
16. State Kirchhoffs law. Apply the rule to determine the value of combined resistance
when three resistors are connected in ( 1) series (2) parallel.
17. Define cureent density (j). Is it a vector or scalar?
Prove that
j = E where symbols have usual meanings.

[Or]
Prove that to obtain maximum current with a combination of identical cells, following
condition must be satisfied

nr
=R
m

Where n= no of cells in each of m rows.

r = internal resistance of each cell. R = external resistance connected with combination.

[Section D]
18.

Muskan and Vincy were performing an experiment to determine the internal resistance
of a cell using a potentiometer setup. After completing the circuit when the jokey was
touched with two extreme ends of the wire the deflection in the galvanometer was not
reversed. They have tried their level best to rectify the circuit to ensure both side
deflection of the galvanometer needle but could not succeed. In order to hurriedly
complete the experiment, Muskan suggested that they will copy and use the observations
of the students of second batch. Vincy however did not agree. She approached the teacher
for help. The teacher told them three possible causes due to which they were getting one
side deflection in the galvanometer. Now Muskan and Vincy completed the experiment and
determined the value of internal resistance of the cell using the relation

r = R [(l1-

l2)/l2] where

R is resistance taken out from resistance box, l 1 and l2 are two balancing
length when the key of the auxiliary circuit is closed and is open respectively.
(a) What are the values possessed by Muskan and Vincy?
(b) List the various causes for getting one side deflection in the galvanometer.
(c) Can you suggest any other method to evaluate the internal resistance of the cell using
a potentiometer?

[Section- E]
19.

(a) Explain the principal of potentiometer. How it is utilized for comparing the emfs of
two cells?
(b) Why potentiometer is preferred over voltmeter to determine the emf of a cell?

[Or]

(a) Explain, how a meter bridge is used to determine the resistivity of the material of a
wire. Why it is preferred to obtain the null point almost in the middle of the meter bridge
wire?
(b) The resistances of four arms of a balanced wheatstone bridge are P= 40 , Q= 10
and R=60 , S=15 . calculate the ratio of heat genereted in the four arms.
