1846:ConstructionbeginsforthefirstProvincialLunaticAsylumona50acreportionoftheGarrisonReserve(Militaryproperty).The
architectwasJohnGeorgeHoward.
August22,1846:TheofficiallayingofthecornerstonebytheHonourableChiefJusticeJohnBeverlyRobinson.
January26,1850:ProvincialLunaticAsylumopensitsdoorstoitsfirst211patients,transferredfromtheTemporaryAsylum,whichwas
housedinaformerjailonKingStreet.
1851:TheTorontoarchitecturefirmofCumberlandandRidoutisengagedtodesignawallwithlodgesandanentrancegatearoundthe
asylum.
18531875:Dr.JosephWorkmanistheasylumsMedicalSuperintendent.
18661869:Newlyconstructedeastandwestwingsaddtomainasylumbuildingtotrytoeasesevereovercrowding.
18711905:ThenameoftheasylumisnowAsylumfortheInsane,Toronto.
18881889:Followingthegovernmentssaleof23acresofthesitefordevelopment,theeastandwestwallsaremovedandrebuiltusing
originalmaterials.Thesiteisnow27acres,thesizeitistoday.
1889:Twonewbrickworkshopbuildings(extant)areconstructedforusebystaffandpatients.
1891:AnewAsylumfortheInsane,MimicoopensasabranchoftheQueenStreetasylum.
The1900s
19051911:Dr.CharlesKirkClarke,MedicalSuperintendentofthenownamedHospitalfortheInsane,Torontorecommendssellingand
relocatingtheovercrowded,poorlymaintainedfacility,withoutsuccess.
1919:AnewfacilityinWhitbyopenstoreplacetheoneonQueenStreethowever,bothcontinuetobeutilized.
1919:NownamedtheOntarioHospital,Toronto.
1954:ConstructionofanewQueenStreetAdministrationBuildingbegins.
1956:TheQueenStreetAdministrationBuildingiscomplete.
1964:TheMinistryofHealthannouncesplanstoreplacetheQueenStreetasylumstructureswithnewbuildingsonthesamesite.
1966:NamechangestoQueenStreetMentalHealthCentre.
1970:Constructionofnewunitsbegins.
1972:ActiveTreatmentUnits1and2andthePaulChristieCommunityCentreopen.
1974:ActiveTreatmentUnits3and4arecomplete.

1979:Theinfamous999QueenStreetaddresschangesto1001inanefforttosymbolicallydisconnectthenewcentrefromitsstigmatized

1979:TheAsylumfortheInsane,Mimico,renamedastheLakeshorePsychiatricHospitalin1966,isclosedandpartlyremergeswith
QueenStreet.
1997:TheHealthServicesRestructuringCommission(HSRC)releasesitsreport,whichincludeschangestoaddictionsandmentalhealth
care.
1998:TheCentreforAddictionandMentalHealth(CAMH)isformedfromthemergeroftheQueenStreetMentalHealthCentre,theClarke
InstituteofPsychiatry,theAddictionResearchFoundation,andtheDonwoodInstitute.

19992001:CAMHsfoundingPresidentandCEO,Dr.PaulGarfinkelinitiatescomprehensivevisioningworkshopsessionsand

March,2015:Thefirststepintheprocurementprocessforthethirdphaseoftheredevelopmentproject,Phase1C,tobuildtwonewhospital
