oger Federer cast off doubts about his tness by winning a ve-set thriller with Kei Nishikori to reach the Australian Open
quarter-nals.

This was only Federer's fourth ofcial match since returning from six months out with injury but the Swiss stayed tough on Rod Laver
Arena to win 6-7 (4/7), 6-4, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 in three hours and 24 minutes.
He will now continue his pursuit of an 18th grand slam title against Mischa Zverev, the world No 50 who had earlier pulled off a shock

Federer's previous ve-set match came at Wimbledon last year when he was beaten by Canada's Milos Raonic in the semi-nals, two
days after winning a decider against Marin Cilic.
The Swiss will be hoping to avoid a similar hangover this time around, particularly given the draw has opened up for him following
Murray's surprise early exit.

Nishikori received a time-out during the fth set

Nishikori stormed 4-0 up in the rst set and held on in the tie-break but the Japanese was on the back foot thereafter, particularly
after needing to take treatment on a back injury in the fth.
Federer might have expected his reward to be another showdown with Murray but instead it will be Zverev after the German made it
to his rst ever grand slam quarter-nal.
The 35-year-old hammered Zverev 6-0, 6-0 when they last met at Halle in 2013 and, with Novak Djokovic also out of the picture, he
now looks well placed to challenge for the title in Melbourne.
12:14pm
Next up for Federer is Zverev
Federer now goes on to face Murray's conqueror Mischa Zverev in his 49th career quarter-nal.
Federer on watching the world No 50 come through against the world No 1...
"I watched that match when I came into the building. I watch a lot of tennis when I'm on tour. Tennis is on TV non-stop. I
thought it was an incredible match.
"I couldn't believe it. Mischa has a good game coming forward. He was going for it and deserved the win. It was a tough one for
Andy but he'll be back."
11:44am
Federer speaks

"Kei was playing his heart out. I thought it was a great match, I enjoyed being part of it.
"I wasn't playing badly in the rst, it's a quick court things happen very fast, it was about staying focused. I was trying to nd
my rhythm and serve.
"At 4-0 down I thought it cant get any worse from there. It was hard not to win that rst set after all the effort but it paid off in
the end. This is a huge win for me in my career.

"Kei isn't the best server on the tour but he is one of the best baseliners. It was hard losing the rst set after all that hard work.
"In the fth I was just trying to stay calm as I knew he's got a good ve-set record."

Federer* 6-7, 6-4, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 Nishikori (*denotes server)
Federer has to take a moment while a few mutters from the crowd disturb his service rhythm. It doesn't throw him off his stride as he
eases to 30-0. He's struck a staggering 81 winners today nearly double that of Nishikori's (42). An ace moves him to three match points
and he only needs one as he smashes Nishikori's moon-ball down the line. FEDERER BEATS NISHIKORI 6-7, 6-4, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 TO
REACH QUARTER-FINALS
11:37am
Federer 6-7, 6-4, 6-1, 4-6, 5-3 Nishikori* (*denotes server)
Some serve-volleying takes Nishikori to 30-0 before striking a backhand into the sidelines. Federer tries to run round a second serve
but misplaces his forehand by some distance. A sliced backhand into the tape from Federer gives Nishikori a comfortable game to 15
but now he'll have to go some to break the Swiss.
11:32am
Federer* 6-7, 6-4, 6-1, 4-6, 5-2 Nishikori (*denotes server)
A great start by Nishikori as he ashes a service winner back past Federer. Ace No 23 from Federer takes the wind out of Kei's sails
though and Nishikori slaps his thighs in motivation as he drags a return into the sidelines.
Some solid serving puts Federer one game away from the last eight. The game looks up for Kei.

Time is running out for Nishikori

11:30am
Federer 6-7, 6-4, 6-1, 4-6, 4-2 Nishikori* (*denotes server)
Nishikori shows soft hands to icka backhand winner past Federer. But the Swiss shows he equally has a soft touch with a deft drop
shot which lands at at the on-rushing Nishikori's feet. Kei seems to be cramping up now as he lines up for his next serve but beats
Federer at his own game during the next rally as the Swiss watches his next drop shot returned in kind by the Japanese.
Crucially, at 30-all, an unforced error from Federer puts Nishikori's nose in front. But Federer isn't going to let one game slide as he
charges the net to dispatch a short return for deuce. A sweetly timed backhand across court steers the game back in Nishikori's
favour.
11:24am
Federer* 6-7, 6-4, 6-1, 4-6, 4-1 Nishikori (*denotes server)
The momentum is all with Federer now as he bounces round the court like he's not 35-year-old and the match isn't over three hours
long. Some solid serving steers him to two games points and a forehand loaded with top spin down the line moves him closer to the
quarter-nals.
11:22am
Federer 6-7, 6-4, 6-1, 4-6, 3-1 Nishikori* (*denotes server)
Nishikori takes a medical time out to have a nice little massage on his side. To be fair the way he's grimacing it doesn't look relaxing in
any shape or form. Federer tries to prevent his aging legs from tightening by bouncing up and down behind the baseline.
When the action returns Nishikori starts atly. A forehandinto the tape takes Federer to 0-30 but a bold overhead lob saves Federer of
racing to 0-40. It was gutsy but it paid off as Federer is unable to get the return back. A serve-volley later and Kei is level at 30-all.
Federer isn't about to let his rival off the hook and a forehand across court into the corner brings up another break point this set.
Nishikori hits a sweet, sweet forehand to move to deuce, the timing on that groundstroke was immense. But in a ash Federer has a
second break point hitting his own forehand winner. Nishikori digs deep to deny the Swiss again and nally gets over the line.
11:10am
Federer* 6-7, 6-4, 6-1, 4-6, 3-0 Nishikori (*denotes server)
Nishikori pushes a delightful second serve down the line to give him hope of a quick recovery this game but Federer isn't having any
of it. The 35-year-old sends down an ace to move to two game points and then res down another solid rst serve and the 17-times
slam champion is edging closer to a quarter-nal date with Mischa Zverev.
11:07am
Federer 6-7, 6-4, 6-1, 4-6, 2-0 Nishikori* (*denotes server)
Nishikori wipes his brow after dragging a backhand wide as Federer senses an opening at 15-30. And quite well he should be. Federer
puts the heat on Nishikori and the fth seed buckles slightly as he nets a return. Federer has two break points now at a key stage in the
match. He sends a forehand ying to squander the rst but Nishikori nets on the next return. FEDERER BREAKS.

11:03am
Federer* 6-7, 6-4, 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 Nishikori (*denotes server)
Nishikori is brimming with condence as he charges down a drop shot to hit a forehand across court which Federer gets his racket on
but can't control. Federer keeps his focus to edge to game point but then throws in another double fault - now his sixth of the match to allow Nishikori to hang around this game. An ace nally gets the job done.

10:59am
Federer 6-7, 6-4, 6-1, 4-6 Nishikori* (*denotes server)
Federer slaps a backhand into the net as the rst point off Nishikori's serve goes begging. The fth seed takes a deep breath before
sending down his rst serve at 30-0 up. Federer isn't given a sniff on Nishikori's serve and this match is going the distance.
10:55am
Federer* 6-7, 6-4, 6-1, 4-5 Nishikori (*denotes server)
It's cool and calm against from Federer as he wraps up a second successive game to love. Now what can he do on Kei's serve?
10:53am
Federer 6-7, 6-4, 6-1, 3-5 Nishikori* (*denotes server)
Federer makes the most of a slower second serve to punch home a backhand which lands ush on the baseline. The Swiss pegs
Nishikori back again to 30-all with another winner, this time on his forehand wing. Fed fancies his chances as he steps into another
second serve, but adrenaline takes over and he slaps into the net. The Swiss doesn't get a lucky break when his return clips the net
cord during the next rally and Federer will only have one more chance to break back before the set is gone.
10:48am
Federer* 6-7, 6-4, 6-1, 3-4 Nishikori (*denotes server)
Federer regains his concentration and has his service rhythm back in full swing as he wraps up a game to love inside a minute.

Federer in full swing

10:47am
Federer 6-7, 6-4, 6-1, 2-4 Nishikori* (*denotes server)
Nishikori has been energised by that break. He whips a forehand winner across court and then watches as a Federer service return
lands long. He gives himself a little pep talk as Federer slaps a return into the net but great play from Federer denies him completing a
love game. It's the only point he drops as Federer can't return a solid rst serve down the T.
10:44am
Federer* 6-7, 6-4, 6-1, 2-3 Nishikori (*denotes server)
Oooh. Nishikori nally has a chance to break for the rst time since early on in the opening set of the match. A mishit smash and a
couple of missed rst serves edges Nishikori to 15-40. He makes the break with a forehand winner down the middle of the court.
Federer's level really dipped there. NISHIKORIBREAKS.
10:40am
Federer 6-7, 6-4, 6-1, 2-2 Nishikori* (*denotes server)
A fth double fault from Nishikori affords Federer of a rst sniff of a break this set at 15-30. Nishikori does enough to throw Federer's
focus to take two straight points and turn the game in his favour. Federer anticipates well during the next rally as he guesses Nishikori
will go for the cross court shot and is there to meet it with a backhand round the post for deuce. Nishikori punches a forehand into the
corner for a second game point but Federer is all over anything inside the service box to bring up a third deuce.
Some more quite brilliant execution from Federer starts to wear Nishikori down and the 17th seed nally breaks up break point after
ve deuces. With the game approaching eight minutes long, Federer shanks a return to squander his chance. Federer edges to a
second break point with a cool forehand winner down the line. But Nishikori responds with his own forehand winner to keep alive
this game. The fth seed is nally able to string two points together and after 10 minutes he has a second game on the board.

10:28am
Federer* 6-7, 6-4, 6-1, 2-1 Nishikori (*denotes server)
Federer is givingany service return short shrift as Nishikori again struggles to make inroads into Federer's service game. Nishikori
shows he's got plenty of ght and spirit left this match as he chases down a volley and then drop shot before dispatching a winner past
the stranded Federer. The Swiss doesn't allow Nishikori a minute to enjoy the moment as he rattles off the next two points.
10:25am
Federer 6-7, 6-4, 6-1, 1-1 Nishikori* (*denotes server)
Nishikori's frustrations get the better of him as another double fault hands Federer another free point. He lashes out by bouncing his
racket off the court. It stays in tact and he tries to regroup. It in fact energises him as he recovers from 0-30 down to draw level with a
brilliant winner on the chase. He makes it a third straight point by putting pressure on Federer's backhand wing to turn the game
around. A fourth straight point is achieved when Federer hits the tape. A good recovery by Kei.
10:21am
Federer* 6-7, 6-4, 6-1, 1-0 Nishikori (*denotes server)
Aces 14 and 15 help Federer steer his way to 40-30. A third straight ace takes him to game. Federer has won 80 per cent of points on
his rst serve today.
10:14am
Federer 6-7, 6-4, 6-1 Nishikori* (*denotes server)
A stunning service return with a backhand across court winner gets Federer up and running. He has a mini-break when Nishikori
goes long and the fth seed is struggling here. When the fth seed nets a volley, he stares at three set points. He's able to save the rst
with a decent serve down the middle. He sets up the next point nicely with a serve out wide but then nets the reply. FEDERER
BREAKS TO WIN THIRD SET.

game went by all too quickly for the former US Open nalist. FEDERER BREAKS.

Nishikori is broken for a second time this set

10:06am
Federer* 6-7, 6-4, 3-1 Nishikori (*denotes server)
Federer throws in a rst double fault since his sluggish start in the opening set to allow Nishikori a free point. Quite incrediblyhe
throws in a second double this game to hand his rival another free point. Federer's concentration levels take a serious nose dive as
Nishikori edges to break point for the rst time since the rst set. A deft drop shot followed up by a belting smash saves the danger.
Federer leaves Nishikori all at sea at the back of the baseline during the next point and after a second deuce Federer smashes another
overhead deep into the corner to cement the break. It was the rst troubled moments he's had on his serve for a long time.
10:00am
Federer 6-7, 6-4, 2-1 Nishikori* (*denotes server)
Federer starts to make his move on Nishikori's serve, injecting pace into the rallies and forcing the fth seed into errors. At 0-30
Federer hits a backhand across court which Nishikori does well to retrieve. Federer forces his rival to charge across court with a drop
shot which is just out of Nishikori's reach.
Nishikori shows great resolve to save two break points but a great angle from Federer across court again from the Swiss is too good for
his opponent. FEDERER BREAKS.
9:55am
Federer* 6-7, 6-4, 1-1 Nishikori (*denotes server)
Nishikori is struggling to contain Federer's rst serves. When he does, he's instantly on the backfoot and has it all to do. One deep
return manages to trouble Federer and allows him to take a point off the 17-time grand slam champion. The fth seed then picks up a
second straight point off his serve when Federer pushes a reply long. It only delays the inevitable as Federer pushes a forehand into

corner for the game.

Federer 6-7, 5-4 Nishikori* (*denotes server)
Nishikori handles the pressure quite brilliantly rushing to three game points before Federer tries to make inroads. A backhand winner
from the fth seed quietens the Swiss and forces him to serve for the second set.
9:43am
Federer* 6-7, 5-3 Nishikori (*denotes server)
Great serving from Federer again as he backs up the break with a hold to love in a game lasting just one minute and 13 seconds. That's
the way to turn up the pressure on your opponent.
9:40am
Federer 6-7, 4-3 Nishikori* (*denotes server)
Nishikori is given the run around on the baseline as Federer works him overtime. The fth seed's scampering pays off as he watches
on Federer return clip the top of the net. Nishikori starts to feel the heat at 15-30 having been overzealous with one forehand. The
pressure is ramped up when he strikes into the net with a regulation forehand during the next rally and now faces two break points.
He misses his rst serve but it doesn't cost him as a baseline slug fest ends in his favour when Federer sends a backhand long. No
worries, Fed has another chance. This time Nishikori pulls out a monster of a forehand which ashes across the ad court and leaves
Federer at-footed on the baseline. A double fault gifts Federer of a third break point and the Swiss converts it when Nishikori is
pushed behind the baseline and can't get enough on a return. FEDERER BREAKS.
9:33am
Federer* 6-7, 3-3 Nishikori (*denotes server)
Ace No 11 from Federer gets him motoring again. He has really started to nd his service rhythm after a few loose games during that
opening set. He's still prone to throw in the odd error as a volley into the sidelines gives Nishikori a few point. The Swiss then
inexplicably drills a backhand wide to bring the fth seed in at deuce.

Federer charges the net to force Nishikori to rush his reply. He backs it up with a solid serve and we're racing through these games.

Nishikori over-eggs a backhand to let Federer in at 30-15 before a brilliant slam-dunk from the Swiss on the turn pulls him level. That
was some angle he managed to create on the smash. An ace down the middle moves Nishikori to game point and despite some
incredible deep hitting from Federer who mixes up his stroke and spin selection, the Japanese gets a third game on the board when
Roger slaps the tape.

9:26am
Federer* 6-7, 2-2 Nishikori (*denotes server)
A body serve allows Federer to rush the net and volley Nishikori's return into the corner en route to moving 40-15 ahead. A whipped
backhand ashes across court and is too good for Nishikori and we remain level this set.
9:22am
Federer 6-7, 1-2 Nishikori* (*denotes server)
A ash of that beautiful backhand into the corner puts Federer's nose in front at 15-30 but Nishikori was burnt by that last set. He
leaps into one forehand and dispatches it across court to restore parity. Two solid rst serves are too good for Federer to get enough
on and we remain on serve.
9:20am
Federer* 6-7, 1-1 Nishikori (*denotes server)
Just over an hour on the clock and Federer's serve is at full swing now as he rushes to 40-0. An ace down the T at the second time of
asking after a let call brings up a comfortable hold to love for the Swiss.
Incidentally, Wawrinka is now the favourite for the tournament after that Murray's stunning departure. Federer is joint second
favourite with third seed Milos Raonic.

Federer 6-7 Nishikori

It stays on serve for the rst three points, Nishikori 2-1 up, with Federer sending the ball long. Two nets in a row for Federer and the
third serve is smashed down the line by Nishikori, who is now up. Federer wins a point back as his opponent slips on the baseline.
Nishikori makes it 4-2 with a powerful serve. Federer closes the gap again, judging a leave absolutely perfectly, seeing the ball go
long. Nishikori produces a spectacular back hand to make it 5-3, but a Federer ace closes the gap again. Two set points for Nishikori as
Federer nds the net and he secures it with an ace. What a relief!
9:04am
Federer 6-6 Nishikori* (*denotes server)
Right then, Nishikori serves to stay in this set. He wins the rst point, then sends down a blistering ace for 30-0. Federer sends it long,
40-0, but produces a wonderful backhand return to claw one back. Nishikori goes wide to close the gap further still40-30, but he
holds his serve to take this rst set to a tie-break.
9:00am
Federer* 6-5 Nishikori (*denotes server)
Utterly magnicent from Federer who is up to the net to win the point, doing so with such ease he looks like he's having a game in his
back garden. An ace completes his service game. Now it's Nishikori to serve to stay in the set. Who would have thought that 30
minutes ago?
8:57am
Federer* 5-5 Nishikori (*denotes next server)
Uh-oh. Nishikori hits the ball long, before sending one wide. 30-0 down. He's up to the net to close the angle and is able to win the
point with ease. Federer smashes it wide but gets a break point with Nishikori nding the net - one he cannot convert. But he
converts another two to level the match.
What a superb ghtback from Federer.
8:50am
Federer* 4-5 Nishikori (*denotes server)
But now it's Federer on top, and the crowd are getting louder with every point he wins. Nishikori hits the net, before the Swiss
produces an ace to win his second consecutive perfect service game.
8:49am
Federer 3-5 Nishikori* (*denotes server)
The momentum is with Nishikori, quickly going 30-15 up. But he nds the net (30-30) before Federer smashes a forehand return
down the line for a break point. Federer sends it long, reviews, and it's in. Nishikori's not particularly happy, arguing Federer
reviewed while he was playing his shot, but the umpire is unmoved.
8:44am
Federer* 2-5 Nishikori (*denotes server)
Federer's ramping it up, producing a powerful serve to go 30-0 up and then 40-0 with an ace. A second consecutive ace hands him
the game. Nishikori to serve for the rst set.

Nishikori has own through this rst set

8:42am
Federer 1-5 Nishikori* (*denotes server)
Perhaps Federer is beginning to nd his range, holding Nishikori to 30-30. But he sends it long, before Nishikori drops one right into
the corner to go 5-1 up within 30 minutes.
8:37am
Federer* 1-4 Nishikori (*denotes server)
He's struggling to nd his groove, Federer, sending it long at 15-15 all. A strong couple of serves puts him 40-30 up and yet he nds the
net again to make it deuce. A powerful forehand hands him the advantage and he nally gets off the mark as Nishikori can't return the
Swiss' serve.
8:34am
Federer 0-4 Nishikori* (*denotes server)
Federer tries to get on top in the fourth game, but nds the net with a forehand and then sends one long. The atmosphere is very, very
quiet. Federer makes it 40-30 with a whippy forehand down the line, one that curls right into the corner. Sublime. But Nishikori holds
to go four games up.
8:30am
Federer* 0-3 Nishikori (*denotes server)
Nishikori dominates Federer's serve again and has two break points for a three-game lead. Federer saves the rst, Nishikori
overhitting a return and then the second with a ferocious serve that Nishikori lines up for the Swiss to dispatch. Deuce it is. Federer
produces one of the shots of the match so far, a backhand winner across court, for advantage, but serves a double fault to return to
deuce. Nishikori wins the game with a wonderful backhand and Federer mistake. Double break!
8:24am
Federer* 0-2 Nishikori (*denotes server)
Now it's Federer's turn to nd his groove, sending a quite wonderful backhand down the line to win the rst point. But a backhand-tobackhand exchange ends with Federer sending too long before a Nishikori ace puts him on the brink of holding serve. That he does,
getting up to the net to dab it out of Federer's reach.

Federer* 0-1 Nishikori (*denotes server)
It's the Swiss to serve rst and Nishikori is quick into his stride, showing plenty of aggression in the early points. A pacey backhand
defeats Federer to make it 15-30, before a return falls just inside the base line. Two break points. Federer saves both, Nishikori nding
the net for the second. Federer is up to the net quickly, but Nishikori sends the ball past him, nding the line by milimetres. The pair
continue to tussle for this rst game before Federer hits it long to give Nishikori an early break.

Well, who would have thought we'd have lost both Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray before entering the second week?
Very few, if anybody. While Roger Federer andKei Nishikori are unlikely to have spent too long dwelling on that thought before their
last-16 tie, but what an opportunity forboth to win this Grand Slam.
Before all that, we have a cracking tie lined up. Both players are out on court limbering up and we'll be underway very shortly.

In just his third ATP Tour-level match since mid-July 2016, the Suiss looked in imperious form as he cruised past Tomas Berdych in
straight sets.
The former world number one made short work of Berdych, taking just 90 minutes to reach the fourth round.
I didn't expect this as such, to be honest, especially not this kind of a scoreline," said Federer.
"Especially not having to save any break points, just always rolling on the serve. That was a big surprise to me. I think it was a great
mental test for me to see if I could stay in the match point for point. I was able to do that.

"That's where I'm just really happy that I was able to deliver that. It's wonderful. I'm really happy of course.
Federer is wary of the challenge posed by world number ve, Kei Nishikori.
I'm a big fan of (Keis) game. He's got one of the best backhands out there. I love how he can crush it down the line or crosscourt.
"He's got wonderful second serve returns. He's fast on his legs. Strong in his mind. I know how tough he is as the match goes along. He
nds his range and his rhythm, he's tough to stop.

For sure it's not going to be easy [facing Federer]. He was playing great tennis today. I watched only a few points. But it's always great

to play Roger.
"It's a big challenge for me. I'm just happy to play him because I think we needed him on the tour. Im happy to see him back 100 per
cent.
What's their head-to-head record?
Roger Federer, who is a four-time Australian Open champion, has the historical advantage over Kei Nishikori.
